Abstract

This paper collects miscellaneous results about the group SU(1, 1) that are helpful in applications in quantum optics. Moreover, we derive two new results, the first of which is about the approximability of SU(1, 1) elements by a finite set of elementary gates and the second of which is about the regularization of group identities for tomographic purposes.

SU(1,1) tomography

Giacomo Mauro D’Ariano, Ernesto De Vito, Lorenzo Maccone

We present a tomographic reconstruction procedure that exploits the symmetry of the SU(1,1) group existing in some physical systems. The tomographic algorithm is derived analytically and the convergence of the procedure is tested on Monte Carlo simulated data.

Quantum circuits and Spin(3n) groups

Alexander Yu. Vlasov

All quantum gates with one and two qubits may be described by elements of Spin groups due to isomorphisms Spin(3)\isomSU(2) and Spin(6)\isomSU(4). However, the group of n-qubit gates SU(2^n) for n>2 has bigger dimension than Spin(3n). A quantum circuit with one- and two-qubit gates may be used for construction of arbitrary unitary transformation SU(2^n). Analogously, the `$Spin(3n)$ circuits' are introduced in this work as products of elements associated with one- and two-qubit gates with respect to the above-mentioned isomorphisms. The matrix tensor product implementation of the Spin(3n) group together with relevant models by usual quantum circuits with 2n qubits are investigated in such a framework. A certain resemblance with well-known sets of non-universal quantum gates (e.g., matchgates, noninteracting-fermion quantum circuits) related with Spin(2n) may be found in presented approach. Finally, a possibility of the classical simulation of such circuits in polynomial time is discussed.

Coherent States for Kronecker Products of Non-Compact Groups: Formulation and Applications

Bindu A. Bambah, G. S. Agarwal

We introduce and study the properties of a class of coherent states for the group SU(1,1) X SU(1,1) and derive explicit expressions for these using the Clebsch-Gordan algebra for the SU(1,1) group. We restrict ourselves to the discrete series representations of SU(1,1). These are the generalization of the `Barut Girardello' coherent states to the Kronecker Product of two non-compact groups. The resolution of the identity and the analytic phase space representation of these states is presented. This phase space representation is based on the basis of products of `pair coherent states' rather than the standard number state canonical basis. We discuss the utility of the resulting `bi-pair coherent states' in the context of four-mode interactions in quantum optics.

Analytic representations based onSU(1 , 1) coherent states and their applications

Constantin Brif, Apostol Vourdas, A. Mann

We consider two analytic representations of the SU(1,1) Lie group: the representation in the unit disc based on the SU(1,1) Perelomov coherent states and the Barut - Girardello representation based on the eigenstates of the SU(1,1) lowering generator. We show that these representations are related through a Laplace transform. A `weak' resolution of the identity in terms of the Perelomov SU(1,1) coherent states is presented which is valid even when the Bargmann index k is smaller than . Various applications of these results in the context of the two-photon realization of SU(1,1) in quantum optics are also discussed.

Remarks on the use of group theory in quantum optics

Christopher C. Gerry

The relationships between certain important nonclassical states of the quantized field and the coherent states associated with the SU(2) and SU(1,1) Lie groups and associated Lie algebras is briefly reviewed. As an example of the utility of group theoretical methods in quantum optics, a method for generating maximally entangled photonic states is discussed. These states may be of great importance for achieving Heisenberg-limited interferometry and in beating the diffraction limit in lithography.

Volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups

Lin Zhang

The matrix integral has many applications in diverse fields. This review article begins by presenting detailed key background knowledge about matrix integral. Then the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups are computed, respectively. As a unification, we present Mcdonald's volume formula for a compact Lie group. With this volume formula, one can easily derives the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups. Applications are also presented as well. Specifically, The volume of the set of mixed quantum states is computed by using the volume of unitary group. The volume of a metric ball in unitary group is also computed as well. There are no new results in this article, but only detailed and elementary proofs of existing results. The purpose of the article is pedagogical, and to collect in one place many, if not all, of the quantum information applications of the volumes of orthogonal and unitary groups.
