Abstract

We develop the theory of an optical quantum memory protocol based on the three pulse photon echo (PE) in an optically dense medium with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB). The wave-function of the retrieved photon echo field is derived explicitly as a function of an arbitrary input Data light field. The storage and retrieval of time-bin qubit states based on the described quantum memory is discussed, and it is shown that the memory allows to measure the path length difference in an imbalanced interferometer using short light pulses.

Photon-echo-based quantum memory of arbitrary light field states

We develop the general theoretical approach to an optical quantum memory (QM) based on the three-pulse photon echo (PE) with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening. The wavefunction of the retrieved photon echo field is derived explicitly as a function of an arbitrary input data light field taking into account the nonlinear interaction between the quantum light fields and the atomic medium. The result opens a clear possibility for quantum manipulations with arbitrary single- and multi-photon entangled light fields.

Quantum memory for nonstationary light fields based on controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening

Barbara Kraus, Wolfgang Tittel, N. Gisin +3 more

We propose a method for efficient storage and recall of arbitrary nonstationary light fields, such as, for instance, single photon time-bin qubits or intense fields, in optically dense atomic ensembles. Our approach to quantum memory is based on controlled, reversible, inhomogeneous broadening and relies on a hidden time-reversal symmetry of the optical Bloch equations describing the propagation of the light field. We briefly discuss experimental realizations of our proposal.

Storage and retrieval of time-bin qubits with photon-echo-based quantum memories

Nicolas Gisin, Sergey A. Moiseev, Christoph Simon

Quantum memories based on the photon-echo principle (with controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening) allow in principle perfect reconstruction of the stored light. In the retrieval process, the envelope of the absorbed wave packet is reversed in time, but the evolution of the phase of the carrier wave is unchanged. We discuss the consequences of this fact for the relative phase of pulses with a certain time delay, and thus for the storage of time-bin qubits. As an illustration, we show that the combination of photon-echo-based memories and unbalanced interferometers leads to a counterintuitive interference effect, allowing one to measure a path length difference $\ensuremath{\Delta}L$ using pulses that are much shorter than $\ensuremath{\Delta}L$.

Quantum memory protocol in QED cavity based on Photon echo

Sergey A. Moiseev

A new protocol of the optical quantum memory based on the resonant interactions of the multi atomic system with a cavity light mode is proposed. The quantum memory is realized using a controllable inversion of the inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant atomic transition and impact interaction (on request) of additional short 2 - laser pulse resonant to an adjacent atomic transition. We demonstrate that the quantum memory protocol is effective for arbitrary storage time and can be used for new quantum manipulations with transient entangled states in the field-atoms evolution. The effect of the fast absorption and emission of the light field is predicted.

Optical quantum memory for polarization qubits withV-type three-level atoms

We investigate an optical quantum memory scheme with V-type three-level atoms based on the controlled reversible inhomogeneous broadening (CRIB) technique. We theoretically show the possibility to store and retrieve a weak light pulse interacting with the two optical transitions of the system. This scheme implements a quantum memory for a polarization qubit - a single photon in an arbitrary polarization state - without the need of two spatially separated two-level media, thus offering the advantage of experimental compactness overcoming the limitations due to mismatching and unequal efficiencies that can arise in spatially separated memories. The effects of a relative phase change between the atomic levels, as well as of phase noise due to, for example, the presence of spurious electric and magnetic fields are analyzed.
