Discrete time quantum walk model for single and entangled particles to retain entanglement in coin space

Abstract

In most widely discussed discrete time quantum walk model, after every unitary shift operator, the particle evolves into the superposition of position space and settles down in one of its basis states, loosing entanglement in the coin space in the new position. The Hadamard operation is applied to let the particle to evolve into the superposition in the coin space and the walk is iterated. We present a model with a additional degree of freedom for the unitary shift operator $U^{\prime}$. The unitary operator with additional degree of freedom will evolve the quantum particle into superposition of position space retaining the entanglement in coin space. This eliminates the need for quantum coin toss (Hadamard operation) after every unitary displacement operation as used in most widely studied version of the discrete time quantum walk model. This construction is easily extended to a multiple particle quantum walk and in this article we extend it for a pair of particles in pure state entangled in coin degree of freedom by simultaneously subjecting it to a pair of unitary displacement operators which were constructed for single particle. We point out that unlike for single particle quantum walk, upon measurement of its position after $N$ steps, the entangled particles are found together with 1/2 probability and at different positions with 1/2 probability. This can act as an advantage in applications of the quantum walk. A special case is also treated using a complex physical system such as, inter species two-particle entangled Bose-Einstein condensate, as an example.

Generic quantum walk using a coin-embedded shift operator

C. M. Chandrashekar

The study of quantum walk processes has been widely divided into two standard variants, the discrete-time quantum walk (DTQW) and the continuous-time quantum walk (CTQW). The connection between the two variants has been established by considering the limiting value of the coin operation parameter in the DTQW, and the coin degree of freedom was shown to be unnecessary [F. W. Strauch, Phys. Rev. A 74, 030301(R) (2006)]. But the coin degree of freedom is an additional resource which can be exploited to control the dynamics of the QW process. In this paper we present a generic quantum walk model using a quantum coin-embedded unitary shift operation ${U}_{C}$. The standard version of the DTQW and the CTQW can be conveniently retrieved from this generic model, retaining the features of the coin degree of freedom in both variants.

Quantum random walks do not need a coin toss

Apoorva Patel, K. S. Raghunathan, Pranaw Rungta

Classical randomized algorithms use a coin toss instruction to explore different evolutionary branches of a problem. Quantum algorithms, on the other hand, can explore multiple evolutionary branches by mere superposition of states. Discrete quantum random walks, studied in the literature, have nonetheless used both superposition and a quantum coin toss instruction. This is not necessary, and a discrete quantum random walk without a quantum coin toss instruction is defined and analyzed here. Our construction eliminates quantum entanglement between the coin and the position degrees of freedom from the algorithm, and the results match those obtained with a quantum coin toss instruction.

Asymptotic entanglement in 2D quantum walks

Mostafa Annabestani, Mohammad Reza Abolhasani, Gonzalo Abal

The evolution operator of a discrete-time quantum walk involves a conditional shift in position space which entangles the 'coin' and position degrees of freedom of the walker. After several steps, the coin-position entanglement (CPE) converges to a well-defined value which depends on the initial state. In this work we provide an analytical method which allows for the exact calculation of the asymptotic reduced density operator and the corresponding CPE for a discrete-time quantum walk on a two-dimensional lattice. We use the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator as an entanglement measure. The method is applied to the case of a Hadamard walk for which the dependence of the resulting CPE on initial conditions is obtained. Initial states leading to the maximum or minimum CPE are identified and the relation between the coin or position entanglement present in the initial state of the walker and the final level of CPE is discussed. The CPE obtained from separable initial states satisfies an additivity property in terms of CPE of the corresponding one-dimensional cases. Non-local initial conditions are also considered and we find that the extreme case of an initial uniform position distribution leads to the largest CPE variation.

ASYMPTOTIC ENTANGLEMENT IN 1D QUANTUM WALKS WITH A TIME-DEPENDENT COINED

S. Salimi, R. YOSEFJANI

Discrete-time quantum walk evolve by a unitary operator which involves two operators a conditional shift in position space and a coin operator. This operator entangles the coin and position degrees of freedom of the walker. In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the coin position entanglement (CPE) for an inhomogeneous quantum walk which determined by two orthogonal matrices in one-dimensional lattice. Free parameters of coin operator together provide many conditions under which a measurement perform on the coin state yield the value of entanglement on the resulting position quantum state. We study the problem analytically for all values that two free parameters of coin operator can take and the conditions under which entanglement becomes maximal are sought.

Quantum walk on a line with two entangled particles

Yasser Omar, Nikola Paunković, Lana Sheridan +1 more

We introduce the concept of a quantum walk with two particles and study it for the case of a discrete time walk on a line. A quantum walk with more than one particle may contain entanglement, thus offering a resource unavailable in the classical scenario and which can present interesting modifications on quantum walks with single particles. In this work, we show both numerically and analytically how the entanglement and the relative phase between the states describing the coin degree of freedom of each particle will influence the evolution of the quantum walk. In particular, the probability to find at least one particle in a certain position after $N$ steps of the walk, as well as the average distance and the squared distance between the two particles, can be larger or smaller than the case of two unentangled particles, depending on the initial conditions we choose. This resource can then be tuned according to our needs to modify the features of a quantum walk. Experimental implementations are briefly discussed.

Quantum Walks with Entangled Coins and Walkers in Superposition

Salvador Elías Venegas-Andraca

We introduce a generalization of quantum walks with entangled coins consisting of a model of discrete quantum walks with coin pairs under various degrees of entanglement and walkers in quantum superposition as initial states. We introduce novel position probability distributions that may be used for algorithm development based on quantum-mechanical phenomena. Also, we numerically show that the skewness of position probability distribution produced by using coin initial state with various degrees of entanglement cannot be easily inferred.
