Critical property of the geometric phase in the Dicke model

Abstract

We obtain the ground-state energy level and associated geometric phase in the Dicke model analytically by means of the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and the boson expansion approach in the thermodynamic limit. The nonadiabatic geometric phase induced by the photon field is derived with the time-dependent unitary transformation. It is shown that the quantum phase transition characterized by the nonanalyticity of the geometric phase is remarkably of the first order. We also investigate the scaling behavior of the geometric phase at the critical point, which can be measured in a practical experiment to detect the quantum phase transition.

Critical Property of the Geometric Phase in the Dicke Model with the Dipole-dipole Interactions

WU Yun-feng, Ping Zhang, Zheng Jian-zhou

We obtained the ground-state energy level and associated geometric phase in the Dicke model with the dipoledipole interactions analytically by the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and the boson expansion approach in the thermodynamic limit. The nonadiabatic geometric phase induced by the photon field was derived with the time-dependent unitary transformation. It is shown that dipole-dipole interactions have a deep influence on scaled behavior of the geometric phase at the critical point.

Macroscopic Quantum States and Quantum Phase Transition in the Dicke Model

Jin-Ling Lian, Yuan-Wei Zhang, Jiu-Qing Liang

The energy spectrum of Dicke Hamiltonians with and without the rotating wave approximation for an arbitrary atom number is obtained analytically by means of the variational method, in which the effective pseudo-spin Hamiltonian resulting from the expectation value in the boson-field coherent state is diagonalized by the spin-coherent-state transformation. In addition to the ground-state energy, an excited macroscopic quantum-state is found corresponding to the south- and north-pole gauges of the spin-coherent states, respectively. Our results of ground-state energies in exact agreement with various approaches show that these models exhibit a zero-temperature quantum phase transition of the second order for any number of atoms, which was commonly considered as a phenomenon of the thermodynamic limit with the atom number tending to infinity. The critical behavior of the geometric phase is analyzed.

Scaling of Berry's phase close to the Dicke quantum phase transition

Francesco Plastina, G Liberti, Angelo C. M. Carollo

We discuss the thermodynamic and finite-size scaling properties of the geometric phase in the adiabatic Dicke model, describing a quantum phase transition for an N qubit register coupled to a slow oscillator mode. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, a non-zero Berry phase is obtained only if a path in parameter space is followed that encircles the critical point. Furthermore, we investigate the precursors of this critical behavior for a system with finite size and obtain the leading orders in the 1/ N expansion of the Berry phase and its critical exponent.

Quantum phase transition for the Dicke model with the dipole–dipole interactions

Gang Chen, Dingfeng Zhao, Zidong Chen

In this paper, we reveal a second-order phase transition for the Dicke model with the dipole–dipole interaction between the atoms. By means of Holstein–Primakoff transformation, the energy spectra for both the normal and superradiant phases are explicitly obtained and therefore the scaling behaviour near the critical transition point can be given clearly. It is also shown that the dipole–dipole interactions between the atoms deeply affect the critical transition point, the ground-state and excitation energies and the scaled atomic inversion in the ground state.

Quantum Phase Transitions in a Generalized Dicke Model

Wen Liu, Liwei Duan

We investigate a generalized Dicke model by introducing two interacting spin ensembles coupled with a single-mode bosonic field. Apart from the normal to superradiant phase transition induced by the strong spin-boson coupling, interactions between the two spin ensembles enrich the phase diagram by introducing ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. The mean-field approach reveals a phase diagram comprising three phases: paramagnetic-normal phase, ferromagnetic-superradiant phase, and antiferromagnetic-normal phase. Ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction can significantly reduce the required spin-boson coupling strength to observe the superradiant phase, where the macroscopic excitation of the bosonic field occurs. Conversely, antiferromagnetic spin-spin interaction can strongly suppress the superradiant phase. To examine higher-order quantum effects beyond the mean-field contribution, we utilize the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, which converts the generalized Dicke model into three coupled harmonic oscillators in the thermodynamic limit. Near the critical point, we observe the close of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited states, the divergence of entanglement entropy and quantum fluctuation in certain quadrature. These observations further confirm the quantum phase transition and offer additional insights into critical behaviors.

Excited-state quantum phase transitions in Dicke superradiance models

Tobias Brandes

We derive analytical results for various quantities related to the excited-state quantum phase transitions in a class of Dicke superradiance models in the semiclassical limit. Based on a calculation of a partition sum restricted to Dicke states, we discuss the singular behavior of the derivative of the density of states and find observables such as the mean (atomic) inversion and the boson (photon) number and its fluctuations at arbitrary energies. Criticality depends on energy and a parameter that quantifies the relative weight of rotating versus counterrotating terms, and we find a close analogy to the logarithmic and jump-type nonanalyticities known from the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model.
