Abstract

The problem of the description of absorption and scattering losses in high- Q cavities is studied. The considerations are based on quantum noise theories, hence the unwanted noise associated with scattering and absorption is taken into account by introduction of additional damping and noise terms in the quantum Langevin equations and input-output relations. Completeness conditions for the description of the cavity models obtained in this way are studied and corresponding replacement schemes are discussed.

QED of lossy cavities: Operator and quantum-state input-output relations

M. Khanbekyan, L. Knöll, D.‐G. Welsch +2 more

Within the framework of exact quantization of the electromagnetic field in dispersing and absorbing media the input-output problem of a high-$Q$ cavity is studied, with special emphasis on the absorption losses in the coupling mirror. As expected, the cavity modes are found to obey quantum Langevin equations, which could be also obtained from quantum noise theories, by appropriately coupling the cavity modes to dissipative systems, including the effect of the mirror-assisted absorption losses. On the contrary, the operator input-output relations obtained in this way would be incomplete in general, as the exact calculation shows. On the basis of the operator input-output relations the problem of extracting the quantum state of an initially excited cavity mode is studied and input-output relations for the $s$-parametrized phase-space function are derived, with special emphasis on the relation between the Wigner functions of the quantum states of the outgoing field and the cavity field.

Quantum description of radiative decay in optical cavities

Jens Oppermann, Jakob Straubel, Karolina Słowik +1 more

We derive the quantum mechanical description of light-matter interactions in optical cavities characterized solely by radiative decay. Unique to radiative decay is the conservation of photon number and coherence, in stark contrast to absorptive losses. This prohibits the description of such cavities by traditional means, e.g., coupling it to a bath of harmonic oscillators into which energy is dissipated. Here, we propose a description of cavities with radiative decay by introducing cavity and noise operators in terms of scattering modes. A multimode input-output formalism to predict measurable far field quantities arises naturally. We apply our general model to the special case of the single excitation regime. We find dynamics reminiscent of the dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model, but with vanishing backaction and a rich temporal and spectral structure of the output modes.

Quantum-state input–output relations for absorbing cavities

M Khanbekyan, D-G Welsch, A A Semenov +1 more

The quantized electromagnetic field inside and outside an absorbing high-$Q$ cavity is studied, with special emphasis on the absorption losses in the coupling mirror and their influence on the outgoing field. Generalized operator input-output relations are derived, which are used to calculate the Wigner function of the outgoing field. To illustrate the theory, the preparation of the outgoing field in a Schrödinger cat-like state is discussed.

Theory of qubit noise characterization using the long-time cavity transmission

Philipp M. Mutter, Guido Burkard

Noise-induced decoherence is one of the main threats to large-scale quantum computation. In an attempt to assess the noise affecting a qubit, we go beyond the standard steady-state solution of the transmission through a qubit-coupled cavity in input-output theory by including dynamical noise in the description of the system. We solve the quantum Langevin equations exactly for a noise-free system and treat the noise as a perturbation. In the long-time limit the corrections may be written as a sum of convolutions of the noise power spectral density with an integration kernel that depends on external control parameters. Using the convolution theorem, we invert the corrections and obtain relations for the noise spectral density as an integral over measurable quantities. Additionally, we treat the noise exactly in the dispersive regime and again find that noise characteristics are imprinted in the long-time transmission in convolutions containing the power spectral density.
