Abstract

We consider the action of the group of local unitary transformations, U(m) x U(n), on the set of (mixed) states W of the bipartite m x n quantum system. We prove that the generic U(m) x U(n)--orbits in W have dimension m^2+n^2-2. This problem was mentioned (and left open) by Kus and Zyczkowski in their paper Geometry of entangled states. The proof can be extended to the case of arbitrary finite-dimensional multipartite quantum systems.

Multipartite states under local unitary transformations

The equivalence problem under local unitary transformation for $n$--partite pure states is reduced to the one for $(n-1)$--partite mixed states. In particular, a tripartite system $\\mathcal{H}_A\\otimes\\mathcal{H}_B\\otimes\\mathcal{H}_C$, where $\\mathcal{H}_j$ is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space for $j=A,B,C$, is considered and a set of invariants under local transformations is introduced, which is complete for the set of states whose partial trace with respect to $\\mathcal{H}_A$ belongs to the class of generic mixed states.

Local unitary equivalence of arbitrary-dimensional multipartite quantum states

Qing Fa Zhou, Yi-Zheng Zhen, Xin-Yu Xu +6 more

Local unitary equivalence is an important ingredient for quantifying and classifying entanglement. Verifying whether or not two quantum states are local unitary equivalent is a crucial problem, where only the case of multipartite pure states is solved. For mixed states, however, the verification of local unitary equivalence is still a challenging problem. In this paper, based on the coefficient matrices of generalized Bloch representations of quantum states, we find a variety of local unitary invariants for arbitrary-dimensional bipartite quantum states. These invariants are operational and can be used as necessary conditions for verifying the local unitary equivalence of two quantum states. Furthermore, we extend the construction to the arbitrary-dimensional multipartite case. We finally apply these invariants to estimate concurrence, a vital entanglement measure, showing the practicability of local unitary invariants in characterizing entanglement.

Bipartite entanglement, spherical actions, and geometry of local unitary orbits

Alan Huckleberry, Marek Kuś, Adam Sawicki

We use the geometry of the moment map to investigate properties of pure entangled states of composite quantum systems. The orbits of equally entangled states are mapped by the moment map onto coadjoint orbits of local transformations (unitary transformations which do not change entanglement). Thus, the geometry of coadjoint orbits provides a partial classification of different entanglement classes. To achieve the full classification, a further study of fibers of the moment map is needed. We show how this can be done effectively in the case of the bipartite entanglement by employing Brion's theorem. In particular, we presented the exact description of the partial symplectic structure of all local orbits for two bosons, fermions, and distinguishable particles putting a special emphasis on the generality of the approach allowing one to consider all three cases in completely parallel manners.

Minimum orbit dimension for local unitary action on n-qubit pure states

Lyons, D W, Walck, S N

The group of local unitary transformations partitions the space of n-qubit quantum states into orbits, each of which is a differentiable manifold of some dimension. We prove that all orbits of the n-qubit quantum state space have dimension greater than or equal to 3n/2 for n even and greater than or equal to (3n + 1)/2 for n odd. This lower bound on orbit dimension is sharp, since n-qubit states composed of products of singlets achieve these lowest orbit dimensions.

We prove that all orbits of the n-qubit quantum state space have dimension greater than or equal to 3n∕2 for n even and greater than or equal to (3n+1)∕2 for n odd. Classification ofn-qubit states with minimum orbit dimension

David W. Lyons, Scott N. Walck

The group of local unitary transformations acts on the space of n-qubit pure states, decomposing it into orbits. In a previous paper we proved that a product of singlet states (together with an unentangled qubit for a system with an odd number of qubits) achieves the smallest possible orbit dimension, equal to 3n/2 for n even and (3n + 1)/2 for n odd, where n is the number of qubits. In this paper we show that any state with minimum orbit dimension must be of this form, and furthermore, such states are classified up to local unitary equivalence by the sets of pairs of qubits entangled in singlets.
