Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate the creation and characterization of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) correlation between optical beams in a time-gated fashion. The correlated beams are created with two independent continuous-wave optical parametric oscillators and a half beam splitter. We define the temporal modes using a square temporal filter with duration $T$ and make time-resolved measurements on the generated state. We observe correlations between the relevant conjugate variables in the temporal mode which correspond to EPR correlation. Our scheme is extendable to continuous-variable quantum teleportation of a non-Gaussian state defined in the time domain such as a superposition of coherent states.

EPR light beams and non-Gaussian quantum distributions in the time domain

N. H. Adamyan, Hayk H. Adamyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We investigate time-dependent properties of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) light beams generated in nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) driven by a sequence of laser pulses with Gaussian time-dependent envelops. The peculiarities of EPR beams are discussed on the base of quadrature squeezing and also in the framework of phase-space Wigner functions for EPR beams which are combined on a half beam splitter. We also investigate the Wigner functions of intensity-correlated twin beams following the conditional photon state-preparation scheme. It is demonstrated that the Wigner functions involve negative values in parts of the phase space for the schemes with one-, two-, and three-photons.

Entanglement of states and quantum distributions in pulsed optical parametric oscillator

N. H. Adamyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

The time-domain properties of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entangled states of light are studied by means of analysis of both the Wigner functions and variance of quadrature amplitudes of generated modes. As a source of EPR states a non-degenerate optical parametric oscillator is considered driven by a sequence of laser pulses with a Gaussian time envelope.

Pulse-resolved measurement of continuous-variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement with shaped local oscillators

Ami Shinjo, Yujiro Eto, Takuya Hirano

We report an experimental demonstration of the continuous-variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox and quantum steering using a pulsed light source and nonlinear optical waveguides. In this pulsed light source experiment, time-domain measurements were performed in which one measured value of the quadrature phase amplitude of the light field was independently obtained for each pulse. This independence is useful for application to quantum information processing and fundamental physics. To realize time-domain measurements, in-house built homodyne detectors were used to detect individual pulses. In addition, to improve the temporal-mode matching between the local oscillator (LO) and entangled pulse, the duration of the LO pulse was shortened by single-pass optical parametric amplification. The product of the conditional variances of the quadrature amplitudes was 0.82 ± 0.09 < 1, which satisfies the condition for realization of the EPR paradox and quantum steering.

Generation of Continuous Variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement via the Kerr Nonlinearity in an Optical Fiber

Christine Silberhorn, Ping Koy Lam, O. Weiß +3 more

We report on the generation of a continuous variable Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement using an optical fiber interferometer. The Kerr nonlinearity in the fiber is exploited for the generation of two independent squeezed beams. These interfere at a beam splitter and EPR entanglement is obtained between the output beams. The correlation of the amplitude (phase) quadratures is measured to be 4.0+/-0.2 (4.0+/-0.4) dB below the quantum noise limit. The sum criterion for these squeezing variances 0.80+/-0.03<2 verifies the nonseparability of the state. The product of the inferred uncertainties for one beam (0.64+/-0.08) is well below the EPR limit of unity.

Time-modulated type-II optical parametric oscillator: Quantum dynamics and strong Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entanglement

Hayk H. Adamyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We investigate semiclassical dynamics and quantum properties of light beams generated in time-modulated nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO). Having in view production of continuous-variable (CV) entangled states of light beams we propose two experimentally feasible schemes of NOPO: (i) driven by continuously modulated pump field; (ii) under action of a periodic sequence of identical laser pulses. It is shown that the time modulation of pump field amplitude essentially improves the degree of CV entanglement in NOPO. On the whole the level of integral two-mode squeezing, which characterizes the degree of CV entanglement, goes below the standard limit established in an ordinary NOPO with monochromatic pumping. We develop semiclassical and quantum theories of these devices for both below- and above-threshold regimes of generation. Properties of CV entanglement for various operational regimes of the devices are discussed in the time domain in application to time-resolved quantum information technologies. Our analytical results are in well agreement with the results of numerical simulation and support a concept of CV entangled states of time-modulated light beams.

Teleportation of continuous quantum variables using squeezed-state entanglement

Kok Win Goh, C. W. Chou, Tiancai Zhang +2 more

We report recent developments in our experiment to teleport light beams by utilizing Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement for continuous quantum variables. We describe details of our experimental apparatus, including the generation of EPR entanglement from squeezed states of light. In addition, we have developed an explicit model for the teleportation of coherent states that includes the effect of diverse loss factors and limited degrees of entanglement, and that enables us to project the possibilities for achieving yet higher fidelities beyond the currently achieved value of 62% with our apparatus. Propects for other teleportation schemes will also be discussed.
