Quantum Many-Body Culling

Abstract

We propose a method to produce a definite number of ground-state atoms by adiabatic reduction of the depth of a potential well that confines a degenerate Bose gas with repulsive interactions. Using a variety of methods, we map out the maximum number of particles that can be supported by the well as a function of the well depth and interaction strength, covering the limiting case of a Tonks gas as well as the mean-field regime. We also estimate the time scales for adiabaticity and discuss the recent observation of atomic number squeezing (Chuu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 260403 (2005)).

Two-term expansion of the ground state one-body density matrix of a mean-field Bose gas

Phan Thành Nam, Marcin Napiórkowski

Abstract We consider the homogeneous Bose gas on a unit torus in the mean-field regime when the interaction strength is proportional to the inverse of the particle number. In the limit when the number of particles becomes large, we derive a two-term expansion of the one-body density matrix of the ground state. The proof is based on a cubic correction to Bogoliubov’s approximation of the ground state energy and the ground state.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Dilute Gases in Traps

Élliott H. Lieb, Robert Seiringer

The ground state of a gas of Bosons confined in an external trap potential and interacting via repulsive two-body forces has recently been shown to exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation in the dilute limit, yielding for the first time a rigorous proof of this phenomenon in a physically realistic setting. We give here an account of this work about the Gross-Pitaevskii limit where the particle number $N$ goes to infinity with $Na$ fixed, where $a$ is the scattering length of the interparticle interaction, measured in units of the trap size.

Quantum Statistics of a Degenerate Bose Gas

Mark G. Raizen

We have observed atomic number squeezing by direct atom counting, and our results are consistent with many-body number state generation. Progress towards controlled entanglement and few-body tunneling will be discussed.

Atom Fock-state preparation by trap reduction

Adolfo del Campo, Juan Gonzalo Muga

We study the production of low-atom-number Fock states by sudden reduction of the potential trap in a one-dimensional strongly interacting (Tonks-Girardeau) gas. The fidelity of the Fock-state preparation is characterized by the average and variance of the number of trapped atoms. Two different methods are considered: making the trap shallower (atom culling [Dudarev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 063001 (2007)], also termed ``trap weakening'' here) and making the trap narrower (trap squeezing). When used independently, the efficiency of both procedures is limited as a result of the truncation of the final state in momentum or position space with respect to the ideal atom-number state. However, their combination provides a robust and efficient strategy to create ideal Fock states.
