Abstract

We create entangled states of the spin and motion of a single 40Ca+ ion in a linear ion trap. We theoretically study and experimentally observe the behavior outside the Lamb-Dicke regime, where the trajectory in phase space is modified and the motional coherent states become squeezed. We directly observe the modification of the return time of the trajectory, and infer the squeezing. The mesoscopic entanglement is observed up to Deltaalpha=5.1 with coherence time 170 micros and mean phonon excitation n = 16.

Coherent dynamics of trapped ions within and outside the Lamb-Dicke regime

Manoj K. Joshi

From subatomic particles to macromolecules, quantum mechanics has a deep impact in understanding the interactions and nature of such constituents of matter. The paradoxical observations of entanglement in quantum systems is used in quantum computations. Ion traps are among the leading platforms which provide clean and highly controllable quantum systems. This thesis presents the study of quantum coherence aiming to devise and test coherent control with trapped ions in a Penning trap. Our apparatus contains one or more calcium ions that are confined in space using DC electric and magnetic fields. Doppler cooling and resolved sideband cooling of trapped ions are carried out to perform high fidelity quantum control. The ions are prepared in their motional ground state via a multi-stage resolved sideband cooling technique. The cooling methods are first verified through simulations. The axial mean phonon numbers for a single ion are measured to be 0.03 ± 0.01 and 0.012 ± 0.009 at 187 kHz and 420 kHz axial frequencies, respectively. The heating rate is measured to be 2.5 ± 0.5 phonons/s, which is consistent with the previous measurements in our system. Similarly, the radial motional modes of a single ion are cooled to 〈n_+ 〉<0.4 and 〈n_- 〉<0.6 from mean phonon numbers corresponding to each mode of around 100. Preliminary studies are carried out of the axial motional modes of a 1D chain and 2D planar crystals, extending sideband cooling to small ICC's in a Penning trap. Coherent control is examined in our system and the optical coherence time and motional coherence time are estimated to be approximately 1 ms and 0.5 s, respectively. Furthermore, a single ion is prepared outside the Lamb-Dicke regime via a sideband heating technique and coherent studies are performed in such a regime via a laser beam.

Preparation of hybrid entangled states and entangled coherent states for a single trapped ion in a cavity

Jie‐Qiao Liao, Yu Guo, Hao‐Sheng Zeng +1 more

In this paper, we study generation of entangled states in a system which consists of a single trapped ion in a cavity. We obtain a cross-Kerr-like interaction between the cavity field (photons) and the centre-of-mass motion (phonons) of the trapped ion in the Lamb–Dicke and large detuning regime. Based on this cross-Kerr-like interaction, we create hybrid entangled states between the phonon mode and the ionic internal states, and between the cavity field and ionic internal states, respectively. We also show that it is possible to prepare entangled coherent states between the cavity field and the phonon mode. We explicitly obtain an entangled state between two pairs of Schrödinger-cat states.

Analyzing of Quantum Entanglement with Concurrence in the Deep Lamb-Dicke Regime

Rasim Dermez

The entangled states of three-level of trapped ion and two phonons (into coherent state) in Lambda configuration forming a Hilbert space of 12-dimensional (D) are analyzed. The concurrence is considered "such as a quantum measure" in trapped ion-coherent state system. Four values of Lamb-Dicke parameter (LDP), eta=0.005, 0.07, 0.08$ and $0.09 are investigated by the worths of concurrence. We demonstrate that as eta is increased, sudden birth of entangled states in the system is increased. Thus, establishing of entangled states can be tuned by LDP.

Investigation of Quantum Entanglement through a Trapped Three Level Ion Accompanied with Beyond Lamb-Dicke Regime

Rasim Dermez

In this study, our goal is to obtain the entanglement dynamics of trapped three-level ion interaction two laser beams in beyond Lamb-Dicke parameters. Three values of LDP, η=0.09, η=0.2 and η=0.3 are given. We used the concurrence and the negativity to measure the amount of quantum entanglement created in the system. The interacting trapped ion led to the formation of phonons as a result of the coupling. In two quantum systems (ion-phonons), analytical formulas describing both these measurements are constructed. These formulas and probability coefficients include first order terms of final state vector. We report that long survival time of entanglement can be provided with two quantum measures. Negativity and concurrence maximum values are obtained N = 0.553 and for LDP = 0.3. As a similar, the other two values of LDP are determined and taken into account throughout this paper. For a more detailed understanding of entanglement measurement results, “contour plot” was preferred in Mathematica 8.

Long-lived entangled qudits in a trapped three-level ion beyond the Lamb–Dicke limit

Rasim Dermez, Özgür Esat Müstecaplıoğlu

Higher dimensional quantum entanglement in a trapped three-level ion interacting with two laser beams in Λ scheme is investigated beyond the Lamb–Dicke limit. It is shown that higher dimensional entanglement can be established in a single step, with a tunable dimensionality and duration via the Lamb–Dicke parameter.

Preparation of motional cat states for trapped ions using a standing wave in strong excitation

Li-Xiang Li, Guang‐Can Guo

We propose a scheme to generate cat states for trapped ions using a standing wave in both the strong excitation regime and the Lamb-Dicke limit. A single strong standing-wave laser, exciting the ion for a short time, will leave the ion in an entangled state. After a measurement of the internal state, the external state will collapse to an odd or even coherent state.
