SUFFICIENCY IN QUANTUM STATISTICAL INFERENCE: A SURVEY WITH EXAMPLES

Anna Jenčová, Dėnes Petz

Published Sep 1, 2006• 35 citations
arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

This paper attempts to give an overview about sufficiency in the setting of quantum statistics. The basic concepts are treated in parallel to the measure theoretic case. It turns out that several classical examples and results have a noncommutative analogue. Some of the results are presented without proof (but with exact references) and the presentation is intended to be self-contained. The main examples discussed in the paper are related to the Weyl algebra and to the exponential family of states. The characterization of sufficiency in terms of quantum Fisher information is a new result.

Sufficiency in quantum statistical inference

Anna Jenčová, Dėnes Petz

This paper attempts to develop a theory of sufficiency in the setting of non-commutative algebras parallel to the ideas in classical mathematical statistics. Sufficiency of a coarse-graining means that all information is extracted about the mutual relation of a given family of states. In the paper su cient coarse-grainings are characterized in several equivalent ways and the non-commutative analogue of the factorization theorem is obtained. As an application we discuss exponential families. Our factorization theorem also implies two further important results, previously known only infinite Hilbert space dimension, but proved here in generality: the Koashi-Imoto theorem on maps leaving a family of states invariant, and the characterization of the general form of states in the equality case of strong subadditivity.

Weakly sufficient quantum statistics

Katarzyna Lubnauer, Andrzej Łuczak, Hanna Podsȩdkowska

Abstract Some aspects of weak sufficiency of quantum statistics are investigated. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a weakly sufficient statistic for a given family of vector states, investigate the problem of its minimality, and find the relation between weak sufficiency and other notions of sufficiency employed so far.

Conditional expectation in an operator algebra. IV. Entropy and information

Hisaharu Umegaki

Introduction. The theory of information, created by Shannon [23], is developed by Feinstein, Kullback, MacMillan, Wiener and other American statisticians (e. g., cf.[10]), and also advanced into the ergodic theory by Gelfand, Khinchin, Kolmogorov, Yaglom and other Russian probabilists (e. g., cf.[8]).Through recent years, the theory is regarded as a new chapter in the theory of probability.Recently, Segal [22] gave a mathematical formulation of the entropy of state of a von Neumann algebra, which contains both the cases for the theory of information and the theory of quantum statistics.Segal's theorem was reformulated in operator algebraic form by Nakamura and Umegaki [16] and independently by Davis [3].Since the summer in 1954, Nakamura and Umegaki have investigated the concept of the conditional expectation in von Neumann algebra as a noncommutative extension of probability theory (cf.for example [13~18] and [25 ~28]), and in the most recent paper [18] it was applied to the theory of measurements of quantum statistics which is regarded as a non-commutative case of the theory of entropy and information.Furthermore, it may be very intersesting to develope the theory of information under functional-analysistic and operator-theoretic methods. From these points of views, we shall discuss the measure of information of integrable operators or of normal states of a von Neumann algebra.Davis [3] has independently studied on the almost same theme with Nakamura-Umegaki [16] and [18], in which he developed the theory of entropy and he simplified the proof of the theorem relative to the operatorentropy. Now, we shall give the basic notations and describe the fundamental concepts in a von Neumann algebra which will be used throughout the present paper.Let A be a von Neumann algebra, that is, A is a weakly closed self-adjoint algebra of bounded operators acting over a complex Hubert space H, which contains the identity operator 7. A linear functional p of A is said to be positive if p(aa*) ^ 0 for every a ε A. Such p is said to be state if p(I) = 1, to be normal in the terminology of Dixmier [4] if p(a a )tp(a) for a a ^a, and to be trace if p(ab) = p(ba) for every pair α, b ε A. The normality of state is equivalent to the complete additivity: Σ p(p a ) = p(Σ Pa) for any disjoint family of projections {p a }aA (cf.Dixmier [4]).

On Quantum Statistical Inference

Ole Eiler Barndorff-Nielsen, Richard David Gill, Peter E. Jupp

Summary Interest in problems of statistical inference connected to measurements of quantum systems has recently increased substantially, in step with dramatic new developments in experimental techniques for studying small quantum systems. Furthermore, developments in the theory of quantum measurements have brought the basic mathematical framework for the probability calculations much closer to that of classical probability theory. The present paper reviews this field and proposes and interrelates some new concepts for an extension of classical statistical inference to the quantum context.

Minimal sufficient statistical experiments on von Neumann algebras

Yui Kuramochi

A statistical experiment on a von Neumann algebra is a parametrized family of normal states on the algebra. This paper introduces the concept of minimal sufficiency for statistical experiments in such operator algebraic situations. We define equivalence relations of statistical experiments indexed by a common parameter set by completely positive or Schwarz coarse-graining and show that any statistical experiment is equivalent to a minimal sufficient statistical experiment unique up to normal isomorphism of outcome algebras. We also establish the relationship between the minimal sufficiency condition for a statistical experiment in this paper and those for subalgebra. These concepts and results are applied to the concatenation relation for completely positive channels with general input and outcome von Neumann algebras. In the case of the quantum-classical channel corresponding to the positive-operator valued measure (POVM), we prove the equivalence of the minimal sufficient condition previously proposed by the author and that in this paper. We also give a characterization of the discreteness of a POVM up to postprocessing equivalence in terms of the corresponding quantum-classical channel.
