Abstract

We introduce observable quantities, borrowing from concepts of quantum information theory, for the characterization of quantum phase transitions in spin systems. These observables are uniquely defined in terms of single spin unitary operations. We define the energy gap between the ground state and the state produced by the action of a single-qubit local gate. We show that this static quantity involves only single-site expectations and two-point correlation functions on the ground state. We then discuss a dynamical local observable defined as the acceleration of quantum state evolution after performing an instaneous single-qubit perturbation on the ground state. This quantity involves three-point correlations as well. We show that both the static and the dynamical observables detect and characterize completely quantum critical points in a class of spin systems.

Determination of ground-state properties in quantum spin systems by single-qubit unitary operations and entanglement excitation energies

S. M. Giampaolo, Fabrizio Illuminati, Paola Verrucchi +1 more

We introduce a method for analyzing ground-state properties of quantum many-body systems, based on the characterization of separability and entanglement by single subsystem unitary operations. We apply the method to the study of the ground-state structure of several interacting spin-1/2 models, described by Hamiltonians with different degrees of symmetry. We show that the approach based on single-qubit unitary operations allows us to introduce ``entanglement excitation energies,'' a set of observables that can characterize ground-state properties, including the quantification of single-site entanglement and the determination of quantum critical points. The formalism allows us to identify the existence and location of factorization points, and a purely quantum ``transition of entanglement'' that occurs at the approach of factorization. This kind of quantum transition is characterized by a diverging ratio of excitation energies associated with single-qubit unitary operations.

Observing a quantum phase transition by measuring a single spin

Manuel Gessner, Michael T. Ramm, Hartmut Häffner +2 more

We show that the ground-state quantum correlations of an Ising model can be detected by monitoring the time evolution of a single spin alone, and that the critical point of a quantum phase transition is detected through a maximum of a suitably defined observable. A proposed implementation with trapped ions realizes an experimental probe of quantum phase transitions which is based on quantum correlations and scalable for large system sizes.

Low-energy-state dynamics of entanglement for spin systems

Rouhollah Jafari

We develop the ideas of the quantum renormalization group and quantum information by exploring the low-energy-state dynamics of entanglement resources of a system close to its quantum critical point. We demonstrate that low-energy-state dynamical quantities of one-dimensional magnetic systems can show a quantum phase transition point and show scaling behavior in the vicinity of the transition point. To present our idea, we study the evolution of two spin entanglements in the one-dimensional Ising model in the transverse field. The system is initialized as the so-called thermal ground state of the pure Ising model. We investigate the evolution of the generation of entanglement with increasing magnetic field. We obtain that the derivative of the time at which the entanglement reaches its maximum with respect to the transverse field diverges at the critical point and its scaling behaviors versus the size of the system are the same as the static ground-state entanglement of the system.

Characteristic quantum phase in Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with exchange and single-ion anisotropies

Yan-Wei Dai, Xijing Liu, Sheng-Hao Li +1 more

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram for a spin-one quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with exchange and single-ion anisotropies in an external magnetic field by using the infinite time-evolving block decimation algorithm to compute the ground-state fidelity per lattice site. We detect all phase boundaries solely by computing the ground-state fidelity per lattice site, with the prescription that a phase transition point is attributed to a pinch point on the ground-state fidelity surface. Furthermore, the results indicate that a magnetization plateau corresponds to a fidelity plateau on the ground-state fidelity surface, thus offering an alternative route for investigating the magnetization processes of quantum many-body spin systems. We characterize all phases by using the local-order parameter, the spin correlation, the momentum distribution of the spin correlation structure factor, and mutual information as a function of the lattice distance. The commensurate and incommensurate phases are distinguished by the mutual information. In addition, the central charges at criticalities are identified by performing a finite-entanglement scaling analysis. The results show that all phase transitions between spin liquids and magnetization plateaus belong to the Pokrovsky-Talapov universality class.

Ansatz for the quantum phase transition in a dissipative two-qubit system

Hang Zheng, Zhiguo Lü, Yang Zhao

By means of a unitary transformation, we propose an ansatz to study quantum phase transitions in the ground state of a two-qubit system interacting with a dissipative reservoir. First, the ground-state phase diagram is analyzed in the presence of the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic bath using an analytic ground-state wave function that takes into account the competition between intrasite tunneling and intersite correlation. The quantum critical point is determined as the transition point from a nondegenerate to a degenerate ground state, and our calculated critical coupling strength α(c) agrees with that from the numerical renormalization-group method. Moreover, by computing the entanglement entropy between the qubits and the bath as well as the qubit-qubit correlation function in the ground state, we explore the nature of the quantum phase transition between the delocalized and localized states.
