Spontaneously generated coherence induced second-order susceptibility in atomic gases

Abstract

The second-order susceptibility which vanishes in the electric-dipole approximation for an atom is induced by the spontaneously generated coherence. The spontaneously generated coherence considered in a lambda-type atomic system causes an indirect coupling between the lower two levels which acts equivalently as a DC-field and therefore makes possible the existence of second-order susceptibility.

Effects of spontaneously induced coherence on laser without population inversion in a four-level Λ-type system

Weicheng Chen

The coherence of a four-level Λ-type system with spontaneously generated coherence(SGC) is studied. With a weak probe and a strong coupling fields, whether the atomic system is on two-photon resonance or not, there is light without population inversion(LWI) on the probe field. On two-photon resonance,LWI is strengthened by SGC.On non-two-photon resonance,LWI can be controlled simply by adjusting the parameter of SGC and the two-upper-level separation.Meanwhile, the analytical solutions to the SGC parameter where LWI occurs are given in both cases.

Effects of Vacuum Induced Coherence on the Medium Absorp tion and Dispersion in a Three-level Λ-type System

Hou Bang-pin

Due to the interaction of the vaccum filed with a three-level Λ-type atom,in which its lower levels are neardegenerate, there appears a vacuum induced coherence originating from the interference between the two transitions. The absorption and dispersion of the atomic system is strongly dependent on the vacuum induced coherence. In addition, the atomic optical property is also related to the phase of the external coherent fields due to the existence of the vacuum induced coherence.

Investigation of spontaneously generated coherence in dressed states of ^85Rb atoms

Chun-Liang Wang, Aijun Li, Xu-Yi Zhou +3 more

We investigate the effects of spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) on the electromagnetically induced transparency features in a four-level Lambda-type system. We show that double-transparency windows and a controllable narrow absorption peak can be obtained with the presence of SGC. We present an equivalent system without the rigorous requirement of close-lying levels to observe the phenomena. We also experimentally demonstrate the corresponding features in a rubidium atomic beam.

Generation of coherence in spontaneous emission

Juha Javanainen

Spontaneous emission may be regarded as a result of the radiation-reaction fields emitted by an atom acting back on the atom itself. It is commonly (and often implicitly) assumed that the frequencies of different transitions in the atom are sufficiently different that the field radiated by one dipole is not in near resonance with any other transition. The “secular assumption” is then made that the field couples back only on the same dipole that originally sent it. In this work we study spontaneous emission without making the secular approximation.

The influence of spontaneously generated coherence on atom-photon entanglement in a Λ-type system with an incoherent pump

Xin Yang, Dong Yan, Qian-Qian Bao +2 more

Abstract Owing to interference induced by spontaneous emission, the density-matrix equations in a three-level Λ-type system have an additional coherence term, which plays a critical role in modulating the inversionless gain and electromagnetically induced transparency effect. In addition, it is shown that spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) has an effect on the entanglement between an atom and a photon of the coupling laser field by calculating the degree of entanglement (DEM) of the atomic system. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the SGC effect on atom-photon entanglement in a Λ-type system, which generally remains a high entangled state. When an incoherent pump source is introduced, we find that the SGC effect could exert considerable influence on the atom reduced entropy under certain conditions for both transient and steady states. More interestingly, such an incoherent pump field could actively affect the short-time dynamic behaviors of the transient quantum entangled state at a certain range of pump rate as a typical coherent case.

Enhancing Kerr nonlinearity via spontaneously generated coherence

钮月萍, 龚尚庆

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of spontaneously generated coherence on the Kerr nonlinearity of general three-level systems of Lambda, ladder, and V-shape types. It is found, with spontaneously generated coherence present, that the Kerr nonlinearity can be clearly enhanced. In the Lambda- and ladder-type systems, the maximal Kerr nonlinearity increases and at the same time enters the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneously generated coherence intensifies. As for the V-type system, the absorption property is significantly modified and therefore enhanced Kerr nonlinearity without absorption occurs for certain probe detunings. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of an extra atomic coherence induced by the spontaneously generated coherence.
