Abstract

Motivated by the recent experiment [V.A. Sautenkov, Yu.V. Rostovtsev, and M.O. Scully, Phys. Rev. A 72, 065801 (2005)], we develop a theoretical model in which the field intensity fluctuations resulted from resonant interaction of a dense atomic medium with laser field having finite bandwidth. The intensity-intensity cross correlation between two circular polarized beams can be controlled by the applied external magnetic field. A smooth transition from perfect correlations to anti-correlations (at zero delay time) of the outgoing beams as a function of the magnetic field strength is observed. It provides us with the desired information about decoherence rate in, for example, $^{87}$Rb atomic vapor.

Intensity correlation and anti-correlations in coherently driven atomic vapor

Motivated by the recent experiment [Sautenkov, V.A.; Rostovtsev, Yu.V.; Scully, M.O. Phys. Rev. A 2005, 72, 065801], we study the field intensity fluctuations due to interaction between a laser with a finite bandwidth and a dense atomic medium. The intensity–intensity cross-correlation of two orthogonal, circular polarized beams can be controlled by the applied external magnetic field. A smooth transition from perfect correlations to anti-correlations (at zero delay time) of the outgoing beams is observed.

Intensity correlation and anti-correlation in electromagnetically induced absorption

Hee Jung Lee, Han Seb Moon

We present measurements of the intensity fluctuations of electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) in the 5S₁/₂ (F = 2)-5P₃/₂(F' = 3) transition of ⁸⁷Rb atoms. Using a linearly polarized laser, the intensity fluctuations between two circularly polarized light components was generated by the spontaneously transferred atomic coherence of EIA medium. The intensity fluctuations due to spontaneous transfer of coherence were changed from correlation of EIA at on-resonance to anti-correlation of EIA at off-resonance. We also investigated the dependence of the values of second-order correlation function g(²)(0) at zero delay time on the temperature of the atomic vapor cell and the incident laser power.

Switching between photon-photon correlations and Raman anticorrelations in a coherently prepared Rb vapor

Vladimir A. Sautenkov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev, Marlan O. Scully

We have experimentally observed switching between photon-photon correlations and anticorrelations between two orthogonally polarized laser beams in an electromagnetically induced transparency configuration in Rb vapor. The correlation and anticorrelation switching occurs at a specific magnetic field strength.

Noise spectroscopy of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances in Rb vapor

M. Martinelli, Paulo Valente, H. Failache +4 more

Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances occurring for near-zero magnetic field are studied in Rb vapor using light-noise spectroscopy. With a balanced detection polarimeter, we observe high contrast variations of the noise power (at fixed analysis frequency) carried by diode laser light resonant with the $5{\mathrm{S}}_{1∕2}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}(F=2)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5{\mathrm{P}}_{1∕2}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}(F=1)$ transition $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and transmitted through a rubidium vapor cell as a function of magnetic field $B$. A symmetric resonance doublet of anticorrelated noise is observed for orthogonal polarizations around $B=0$ as a manifestation of ground-state coherence. We also observe sideband noise resonances when the magnetic field produces an atomic Larmor precession at a frequency corresponding to one-half of the analysis frequency. The resonances on the light fluctuations are the consequence of phase to amplitude noise conversion owing to nonlinear coherence effects in the response of the atomic medium to the fluctuating field. A theoretical model (derived from linearized Bloch equations) is presented that reproduces the main qualitative features of the experimental signals under simple assumptions.

Power-broadening-free correlation spectroscopy in cold atoms

H. M. Florez, Luciano Soares da Cruz, Marcio H. G. de Miranda +4 more

We report a detailed investigation on the properties of intensity correlation spectra for laser beams interacting with cold atoms under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We describe the transition of their intensity fluctuations from correlation to anticorrelation as the mean intensity of the fields increases. Such a transition occurs for laser frequencies around the EIT resonance, which is characterized by a correlation peak. The transition point between correlation and anticorrelation is independent of power broadening and provides directly the ground-state coherence time. We introduce a method to extract in real time the correlation spectra of the system. The experiments were done in two distinct magneto-optical traps, one for cesium and the other for rubidium atoms, employing different detection schemes. A simplified theory is introduced assuming three-level atoms in $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ configuration interacting with a laser with stochastic phase fluctuations, providing a good agreement with the experimental observations.
