Abstract

Using the time-dependent annihilation and creation operators, the invariant operators, for a free mass and an oscillator, we find the coherent-squeezed state representation of a travelling general Gaussian wave packet with initial expectation values, $x_0$ and $p_0$, of the position and momentum and variances, $Δx_0$ and $Δp_0$. The initial general Gaussian wave packet takes, up to a normalization factor, the form $e^{i p_0 x/\hbar} e^{- (1 \mp i δ) (x - x_0)^2 / 4 (Δx_0)^2}$, where $δ= \sqrt{(2Δx_0 Δp_0/\hbar)^2 -1}$ denotes a measure of deviation from the minimum uncertainty or the initial position-momentum correlation $δ= 2Δ(xp)_0 / \hbar$. The travelling Gaussian wave packet takes, up to a time-dependent phase and normalization factor, the form $e^{i p_c x/\hbar} e^{- (1 - 2 i Δ(xp)_t/\hbar) (x - x_c)^2 / 4 (Δx_t)^2}$ and the centroid follows the the classical trajectory with $x_c(t)$ and $p_c(t)$. The position variance is found to have additionally a linearly time-dependent term proportional to $δ$ with both positive and negative signs.

Invariant operators for quadratic Hamiltonians

Mark Andrews

The motion of wave packets can be easily determined for any Hamiltonian that is quadratic in position and momentum, even if the coefficients of the terms in the Hamiltonian vary with time. The method is based on the existence of an invariant operator, linear in position and momentum, the coefficients of these operators being solutions of the corresponding classical system. This immediately yields a set of very simple wave packets whose evolution is easily determined, and whose magnitude has the same form as the energy eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator (i.e., Gaussian or Hermite–Gaussian). This set provides a complete basis for finding the evolution of any state and the exact propagator is readily determined. For the harmonic oscillator, this set includes coherent states, squeezed states, displaced number states, and squeezed number states as special cases. The following important properties hold for every quadratic Hamiltonian, no matter what time dependence is present in the Hamiltonian: (1) The motion of the centroid of any wave packet separates from that of any moments relative to the centroid. (2) Every detail of the evolution of the quantum system can be calculated from the solutions of the corresponding classical system. (3) Wave functions of Gaussian (or Hermite–Gaussian) form will retain that form as they evolve.

Time behavior of a Gaussian wave packet accompanying the generalized coherent state for the inverted oscillator

Mustapha Maamache, Yacine Bouguerra, Jeong Ryeol Choi

A Gaussian wave packet of the inverted oscillator is investigated using the invariant operator method together with the unitary transformation method. A simple wave packet directly derived from the eigenstates of the invariant operator of the system corresponds to a plane wave that is fully delocalized. However, we can construct a weighted wave packet in terms of such plane waves, which corresponds to a Gaussian wave. This wave packet is associated with the generalized coherent state, which can be crucially utilized for investigating the classical limit of quantum wave mechanics. Various quantum properties of the system, such as fluctuations of the canonical variables, the uncertainty product, and the motion of the wave packet or quantum particle, are analyzed by means of this wave packet. We have confirmed that the time behavior of such a wave packet is very similar to the counterpart classical state. The wave packet runs away from the origin in the positive or negative direction in the 1D coordinate depending on the condition of the initial state. We have confirmed that this wave packet not only moves acceleratively but also spreads out during its propagation.

On the Quantum Mechanics of Squeezed States

K. Wódkiewicz

We show that the squeezed states of quantum optics are physically and mathematically equivalent to Gaussian wave packets. In the framework of wave mechanics it is possible to formulate and investigate in a very simple way all the properties of reduced or squeezed fluctuations of the position and momentum operators. We study squeezed quantum fluctuations of a minimum-uncertainty Gaussian wave function under two different dynamical conditions of free evolution and harmonic oscillation.

Coherent states for the nonlinear harmonic oscillator

Subir Ghosh

Wave packets for the quantum nonlinear oscillator are considered in the generalized coherent state framework. To first order in the nonlinearity parameter the coherent state behaves very similar to its classical counterpart. The position expectation value oscillates in a simple harmonic manner. The energy-momentum uncertainty relation is time independent as in a harmonic oscillator. Various features (such as the squeezed state nature) of the coherent state have been discussed.

Generalized coherent states for time-dependent and nonlinear Hamiltonian operators via complex Riccati equations

Octavio Castaños, Dieter Schuch, Óscar Rosas-Ortiz

Based on the Gaussian wave packet solution for the harmonic oscillator and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators, a generalization is presented that also applies for wave packets with time-dependent width as they occur for systems with different initial conditions, time-dependent frequency or in contact with a dissipative environment. In all these cases the corresponding coherent states, position and momentum uncertainties and quantum mechanical energy contributions can be obtained in the same form if the creation and annihilation operators are expressed in terms of a complex variable that fulfills a nonlinear Riccati equation which determines the time-evolution of the wave packet width. The solutions of this Riccati equation depend on the physical system under consideration and on the (complex) initial conditions and have close formal similarities with general superpotentials leading to isospectral potentials in supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The definition of the generalized creation and annihilation operator is also in agreement with a factorization of the operator corresponding to the Ermakov invariant that exists in all cases considered.
