Abstract

We study the dynamics of a two-level quantum system interacting with an external electromagnetic field periodic and quasiperiodic in time. The quantum evolution is described exactly by the classical equations of motion of a gyromagnet in a time-dependent magnetic field. We prove that this classical system is integrable as a consequence of the underlying unitary quantum dynamics. As a consequence, for the periodic case, (i) rigorous assessment of the validity of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) becomes possible even beyond the assumptions of resonance and weak coupling (the latter conditions are also shown to follow from the method of averaging); (ii) we determine conditions for the realization of the quantum NOT operation beyond the RWA, by means of classical stroboscopic maps. The results bear upon areas as diverse as quantum optics, nuclear magnetic resonance, and quantum computation.

Two Driven Coupled Qubits in a Time Varying Magnetic Field: Exact and Approximate Solutions

E. I. Lashin, Gehad Sadiek, M. Sebawe Abdalla +1 more

We study the dynamics of a two-qubit system coupled through time dependent anisotropic $XYZ$ Heisenberg interaction in presence of a time varying non-uniform external magnetic field. Exact results are presented for the time evolution of the system under certain integrability conditions. Furthermore, the corresponding entanglement of the system is studied for different values of the involved parameters. We found that the time evolution and different properties of entanglement such as amplitude, frequency and profile can be finely tuned by the interplay of the characteristics of the time-dependent magnetic field and exchange coupling. Also we show how the discrete symmetries of the system Hamiltonian, which splits its Hilbert space into two distinct subspaces, can be utilized to deduce the dynamics in one of its two distinct subspaces from the other one. Moreover, approximate results for the time evolution are provided utilizing the rotating wave as well as the perturbation approximations for the special case of either static magnetic field or exchange coupling. We compare the range of validity of the two approximation methods and their effectiveness in treating the considered system and determine their critical parameters.

Coupled modes locally interacting with qubits: Critical assessment of the rotating-wave approximation

Paulo C. Cárdenas, Wallace S. Teixeira, F. L. Semião

The interaction of qubits with quantized modes of electromagnetic fields has been largely addressed in the quantum optics literature under the rotating wave approximation (RWA), where rapid oscillating terms in the qubit-mode interaction picture Hamiltonian can be neglected. At the same time, it is generally accepted that, provided the interaction is sufficiently strong or for long times, the RWA tends to describe physical phenomena incorrectly. In this work, we extend the investigation of the validity of the RWA to a more involved setup where two qubit-mode subsystems are brought to interaction through their harmonic coordinates. Our treatment is all analytic thanks to a sequence of carefully chosen unitary transformations, which allows us to diagonalize the Hamiltonian within and without the RWA. By also considering qubit dephasing, we find that the purity of the two-qubit state presents non-Markovian features which become more pronounced as the coupling between the modes gets stronger and the RWA loses its validity. In the same regime, there occurs fast generation of entanglement between the qubits, which is also not correctly described under the RWA. The setup and results presented here clearly show the limitations of the RWA in a scenario amenable to exact description and free from numerical uncertainties. Consequently, it may be of interest for the community working with cavity or circuit quantum electrodynamic systems in the strong coupling regime.

Open Quantum System Stochastic Dynamics and the Rotating Wave Approximation

Y. B. Band

We study the stochastic dynamics of a two-level quantum system interacting with a stochastic magnetic field, and a single frequency electromagnetic field, with and without making the rotating wave approximation (RWA). The transformation to the rotating frame does not commute with the stochastic Hamiltonian if the stochastic field has nonvanishing components in the transverse direction. Hence, making the RWA modifies the stochastic terms in the Hamiltonian. Modification of the decay terms is also required in a master equation approach (i.e., the Liouville--von Neumann density matrix equation) for describing the dynamics. For isotropic Gaussian white noise, the RWA dynamics remains Markovian, although the Lindblad terms in the master equation for the density matrix become time-dependent when the non-commutation of the RWA transformation and the noise Hamiltonian is properly accounted for. We also treat Ornstein--Uhlenbeck noise, and find, in contra-distinction to the white noise case, a significant difference in the dynamics calculated with the RWA when the non-commutation of the RWA transformation and the noise Hamiltonian is taken into account. These findings are applicable to the modeling of any open quantum system coupled to an electromagentic field.

Open quantum system stochastic dynamics with and without the RWA

Abstract We study the dynamics of a two-level quantum system interacting with a single frequency electromagnetic field and a stochastic magnetic field, with and without making the rotating wave approximation (RWA). The transformation to the rotating frame does not commute with the stochastic Hamiltonian if the stochastic field has nonvanishing components in the transverse direction, hence, applying the RWA requires transformation of the stochastic terms in the Hamiltonian. For Gaussian white noise, the master equation is derived from the stochastic Schrödinger–Langevin equations, with and without the RWA. With the RWA, the master equation for the density matrix has Lindblad terms with coefficients that are time-dependent (i.e., the master equation is time-local). An approximate analytic expression for the density matrix is obtained with the RWA. For Ornstein–Uhlenbeck noise, as well as other types of colored noise, in contradistinction to the Gaussian white noise case, the non-commutation of the RWA transformation and the noise Hamiltonian can significantly affect the RWA dynamics when , where ω is the electromagnetic field frequency and is the stochastic magnetic field correlation time.

Quantum Molecular Dynamics Study of a Two-Level Model with a Periodic External Field

Masayoshi Inoue, Shuichi Shiraishi

Periodic and quasi-periodic response of a two-level model to an external field is studied numerically and analytically, where the methods of (1) Fourier analysis, (2) stroboscopic representation and (3) projection of an orbit are used. In general, the model shows a quasi-periodic motion. However, when the intensity of the external field E takes a specific value, the motion becomes a periodic motion whose periodicity is N times bigger than that of the external field. The structure of this synchronization phenomenon for E≲0.5 is expressed by N[(ω-Ω)2 + (µE/2)2]1/2 = nω; (n = 1,2,3,···), where ω is the angular frequency of the external field, Ω is the Bohr frequency and µ is the electric moment. We find that the motion is described approximately by three modes for a weak external field. This approximate solution is better than Rabi's solution based on the rotating-wave approximation.

Amplitude spectroscopy of two coupled qubits

Сатанин Аркадий Михайлович, M. V. Denisenko, Sahel Ashhab +1 more

We study the effect of a time-dependent driving field with a high amplitude on a system composed of two coupled qubits (two-level systems). Using the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) makes it possible to find simple conditions for resonant excitation of the four-level system. We find that the resonance conditions include the coupling strength between the qubits. Numerical simulations confirm the qualitative conclusions following from the RWA. To reveal the peculiarities of resonant transitions caused by the quasilevel motion and crossing in a periodic driving field, we use Floquet states, which determine the precise intermediate states of the system. Calculating the quasienergy states of the multilevel system makes it possible to find the transition probabilities and build interference patterns for the transition probabilities. The interference patterns demonstrate the possibility of obtaining various pieces of information about the qubits, since the positions of transition-probability maxima depend on various system parameters, including the coupling strength between the qubits.
