A new perturbative expansion of the time evolution operator associated with a quantum system

Abstract

A novel expansion of the evolution operator associated with an—in general, time-dependent—perturbed quantum Hamiltonian is presented. It is shown that it has a wide range of possible realizations that can be fitted according to computational convenience or to satisfy specific requirements. As a remarkable example, the quantum Hamiltonian describing a laser-driven trapped ion is studied in detail.

A perturbative expansion of the evolution operator associated with time-dependent quantum Hamiltonians

Paolo Aniello

A novel expansion -- which generalizes Magnus expansion -- of the evolution operator associated with a (in general, time-dependent) perturbed Hamiltonian is introduced. It is shown that it has a wide range of possible solutions that can be fitted according to computational convenience. The time-independent and the adiabatic case are studied in detail.

Perturbative Treatment of the Evolution Operator Associated with Raman Couplings

Benedetto Militello

A novel perturbative treatment of the time evolution operator of a quantum system is applied to the model describing a Raman-driven trapped ion in order to obtain a suitable 'effective model'.It is shown that the associated effective Hamiltonian describes the system dynamics up to a certain transformation which may be interpreted as a 'dynamical dressing' of the effective model.

Trapped ions interacting with laser fields: a perturbative analysis without rotating wave approximation

Paolo Aniello, Vladimir I. Man’ko, Giuseppe Marmo +3 more

The Hamiltonian describing a single ion placed in a potential trap in interaction with a laser beam is studied by means of a suitable perturbative approach. It is shown, in particular, that the rotating wave approximation does not provide the correct expression, at the first perturbative order, of the evolution operator of the system.

Projection operator based expansion of the evolution operator

Vitalii Semin, Francesco Petruccione

Abstract The not necessarily unitary evolution operator of a finite dimensional quantum system is studied with the help of a projection operators technique. Applying this approach to the Schrödinger equation allows the derivation of an alternative expression for the evolution operator, which differs from the traditional chronological exponent. An appropriate choice of projection operators results in the possibility of studying the diagonal and non-diagonal elements of the evolution operator separately. The suggested expression implies a particular form of perturbation expansion, which leads to a new formula for the short time dynamics. The new kind of perturbation expansion can be used to improve the accuracy of the usual chronological exponent significantly. The evolution operator for any arbitrary time can be efficiently recovered using the semigroup properties. The method is illustrated by two examples, namely the dynamics of a three-level system in two nonresonant laser fields and the calculation of the partition function of a finite XY-spin chain.

Time Dependent Perturbation Theory

Asim Gangopadhyaya, Constantin Rasinariu

In time-independent perturbation theory, we were interested in finding the eigenvalues and eigenstates of a system whose Hamiltonian could be written as the sum of a known Hamiltonian and another “small” term describing the perturbation. In time-dependent perturbation theory, the goal is different. We determine the time evolution operator of the perturbed system and use it to estimate the transition probabilities between two states of the unperturbed system.

Generalized adiabatic product expansion: A nonperturbative method of solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation

Ali Mostafazadeh

We outline a method based on successive canonical transformations which yields a product expansion for the evolution operator of a general (possibly non-Hermitian) Hamiltonian. For a class of such Hamiltonians this expansion involves a finite number of terms, and our method gives the exact solution of the corresponding time-dependent Schrödinger equation. We apply this method to study the dynamics of a general nondegenerate two-level quantum system, a time-dependent classical harmonic oscillator, and a degenerate system consisting of a spin 1 particle interacting with a time-dependent electric field E⃗(t) through the Stark Hamiltonian H=λ(J⃗⋅E⃗)2.
