Quantum walk on the line: Entanglement and nonlocal initial conditions

Abstract

The conditional shift in the evolution operator of a quantum walk generates entanglement between the coin and position degrees of freedom. This entanglement can be quantified by the von Neumman entropy of the reduced density operator (entropy of entanglement). We show analytically that for a Hadamard walk with local initial conditions the asymptotic entanglement is 0.872 for all initial coin states. When nonlocal initial conditions are considered, the asymptotic entanglement varies smoothly between almost complete entanglement and no entanglement (product state). An exact expression for the asymptotic (long-time) entanglement is obtained for initial conditions in the position subspace spanned by $\ensuremath{\mid}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1⟩$.

Long-time entanglement in the Quantum Walk

Gonzalo Abal, R. Donangelo, Hugo Fort

Abstract. The coin-position entanglement generated by the evolution operator of a discrete–time quantum walk is quantified, using the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator (entropy of entanglement). In the case of a single walker, the entropy of entanglement converges, in the long time limit, to a well defined value which depends on the initial state. Exact expressions are obtained for local and non-local initial conditions. We also discuss the asymptotic bi-partite entanglement generated by non-separable coin operations for two coherent quantum walkers. In this case, the entropy of entanglement is observed to increase logarithmically with time. 1.

Asymptotic entanglement in 2D quantum walks

Mostafa Annabestani, Mohammad Reza Abolhasani, Gonzalo Abal

The evolution operator of a discrete-time quantum walk involves a conditional shift in position space which entangles the 'coin' and position degrees of freedom of the walker. After several steps, the coin-position entanglement (CPE) converges to a well-defined value which depends on the initial state. In this work we provide an analytical method which allows for the exact calculation of the asymptotic reduced density operator and the corresponding CPE for a discrete-time quantum walk on a two-dimensional lattice. We use the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator as an entanglement measure. The method is applied to the case of a Hadamard walk for which the dependence of the resulting CPE on initial conditions is obtained. Initial states leading to the maximum or minimum CPE are identified and the relation between the coin or position entanglement present in the initial state of the walker and the final level of CPE is discussed. The CPE obtained from separable initial states satisfies an additivity property in terms of CPE of the corresponding one-dimensional cases. Non-local initial conditions are also considered and we find that the extreme case of an initial uniform position distribution leads to the largest CPE variation.

ASYMPTOTIC ENTANGLEMENT IN THE PARAMETRIZED HADAMARD WALK

Clement Boateng Ampadu

We study asymptotic entanglement properties of the Hadamard walk with phase parameters on the line using the Fourier representation. We use the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density operator to quantify entanglement between the coin and position degrees of freedom. We investigate obtaining exact expressions for the asymptotic entropy of entanglement, for different classes of initial conditions. We also determine under which conditions the asymptotic entropy of entanglement can be characterized as full, intermediate, or minimum.

Thermodynamics of N -dimensional quantum walks

A. Romanelli, R. Donangelo, Renato Portugal +1 more

The entanglement between the position and the coin state of an $N$-dimensional quantum walker is shown to lead to a thermodynamic theory. The entropy, in this thermodynamics, is associated with the reduced density operator for the evolution of chirality, taking a partial trace over positions. From the asymptotic reduced density matrix it is possible to define thermodynamic quantities, such as the asymptotic entanglement entropy, temperature, and Helmholz free energy. We study in detail the case of a two-dimensional quantum walk, in the case of two initial conditions: a nonseparable coin-position initial state and a separable one. The resulting entanglement temperature is presented as a function of the parameters of the system and those of the initial conditions.

Asymptotic entanglement in the discrete-time quantum walk

Gonzalo Abal, R. Donangelo, Hugo Fort

The coin-position entanglement generated by the evolution operator of a discrete--time quantum walk converges, in the long time limit, to a well defined value which depends on the initial state. We also discuss the asymptotic bi-partite entanglement generated by several non-separable coin operations for two coherent quantum walkers, for which the entropy of entanglement increases logarithmically.

Multipartite entanglement dynamics in quantum walks

Emil K. F. Donkersloot, René Sondenheimer, Jan Sperling

Quantum walks constitute a rich area of quantum information science, where multipartite entanglement plays a central role in the dynamics and scalability of quantum advantage over classical simulators. In this work, we study the multipartite entanglement of quantum walks in optical settings. We present methods for computing a geometric measure of entanglement for arbitrary partitions of a single-walker quantum walk and for analyzing the entanglement in multi-walker scenarios. These techniques are used for numerical studies on the entanglement dynamics of quantum walks in large systems and under various initial conditions. For a given bipartition, based on the coin degrees of freedom, we derive exact expressions describing the complete entanglement dynamics for arbitrary localized initial conditions. We use these expressions for analytic statements about the asymptotic behavior of the system. Furthermore, we demonstrate the emergence of entanglement typicality in statistical ensembles of random optical networks.
