Generation of Hyperentangled Photon Pairs

Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate the first quantum system entangled in every degree of freedom (hyperentangled). Using pairs of photons produced in spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we verify entanglement by observing a Bell-type inequality violation in each degree of freedom: polarization, spatial mode, and time energy. We also produce and characterize maximally hyperentangled states and novel states simultaneously exhibiting both quantum and classical correlations. Finally, we report the tomography of a 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 system (36-dimensional Hilbert space), which we believe is the first reported photonic entangled system of this size to be so characterized.

Hyperentanglement of two photons in three degrees of freedom

Giuseppe Vallone, Raino Ceccarelli, F. De Martini +1 more

A six-qubit hyperentangled state has been realized by entangling two photons in three degrees of freedom. These correspond to the polarization, the longitudinal momentum, and the indistinguishable emission produced by a two-crystal system operating with type I phase matching in the spontaneous parametric down conversion regime. The state has been characterized by a chained interferometric apparatus and its complete entangled nature has been tested by a witness criterion specifically presented for hyperentangled states. The experiment represents a realization of a genuine hyperentangled state with the maximum entanglement between the two particles allowed in the given ${2}^{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{2}^{3}$ Hilbert space.

Entanglement Verification of Hyperentangled Photon Pairs

Christopher K. Zeitler, Joseph C. Chapman, Eric Chitambar +1 more

We experimentally investigate the properties of hyperentangled states displaying simultaneous entanglement in multiple degrees of freedom and find that Bell tests beyond the standard Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality can reveal a higher-dimensional nature in a device-independent way. Specifically, we show that hyperentangled states possess more than just simultaneous entanglement in separate degrees of freedom but also entanglement in a higher-dimensional Hilbert space. We also verify the steerability of hyperentangled quantum states by steering different photonic degrees of freedom.

Hyperentanglement for advanced quantum communication

Julio T. Barreiro, Paul G. Kwiat

Quantum entanglement is known to enable otherwise impossible feats in various communication protocols, such as quantum key distribution and super-dense coding. Here we describe efforts to further enhance the usual benefits, by incorporating quantum states that are simultaneously entangled in multiple degrees of freedom – “hyperentangled”. Via the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion, we have demonstrated photon pairs simultaneously entangled in polarization and spatial mode, and have used these to realize remote entangled state preparation, full polarization Bell-state analysis, and the highest reported capacity quantum dense coding.

Experimental Demonstration of High-Dimensional Hyperentagled Quantum States

Luis Javier González-Martín del Campo, Nicolas Eduardo Tangarife Villamizar, Sakshi Sharma +3 more

In this work we demonstrate experimentally the realization and characterization of high-dimensional hyperentangled quantum states of light in the time-energy and polarization degree of freedom. For this goal we use an ultra-bright Sagnac-type source to generate entangled photon in the telecommunication band by means of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). To project the time-energy entanglement to a 4-dimensional space we implemented a 4-arm interferometer, consisting of a cascade array of 2-arm unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers (UMZI). For the case of the projection of the entangled quantum states in the polarization degree of freedom (DoF) a compact, stable and robust polarization analysis module (PAM) was implemented to project polarization correlations in two non-orthogonal basis.

Generation of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum entangled states

Eleonora Nagali, Fabio Sciarrino

Hybrid entangled states exhibit entanglement between different degrees of freedom of a particle pair and thus could be useful for asymmetric optical quantum network where the communication channels are characterized by different properties. We report the first experimental realization of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states by adopting a spontaneous parametric down conversion source of polarization entangled states and a polarization-OAM transferrer. The generated quantum states have been characterized through quantum state tomography. Finally, the violation of Bell's inequalities with the hybrid two photon system has been observed.
