Abstract

We establish a connection between the problem of constructing maximal collections of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and an open problem in the theory of Lie algebras. More precisely, we show that a collection of $\mu$ MUBs in $\K^n$ gives rise to a collection of $\mu$ Cartan subalgebras of the special linear Lie algebra $sl_n(\K)$ that are pairwise orthogonal with respect to the Killing form, where $\K=\R$ or $\K=\C$. In particular, a complete collection of MUBs in $\C^n$ gives rise to a so-called orthogonal decomposition (OD) of $sl_n(\C)$. The converse holds if the Cartan subalgebras in the OD are also $\dag$-closed, i.e., closed under the adjoint operation. In this case, the Cartan subalgebras have unitary bases, and the above correspondence becomes equivalent to a result of \cite{bbrv02} relating collections of MUBs to collections of maximal commuting classes of unitary error bases, i.e., orthogonal unitary matrices. This connection implies that for $n\le 5$ an essentially unique complete collection of MUBs exists. We define \emph{monomial MUBs}, a class of which all known MUB constructions are members, and use the above connection to show that for $n=6$ there are at most three monomial MUBs.

Orthogonal pairs and mutually unbiased bases

Alexey Igorevich Bondal, Il'ya Yur'evich Zhdanovskiy

The paper is devoted to representation theoretic and algebraic geometric aspects of the theory of orthogonal decompositions of Lie algebra sl(n) into Cartan subalgebras orthogonal with respect to Killing form and the relevant theory of mutually unbiased bases. We describe the main steps of our proof for the existence of 4-dimensional family of orthogonal pairs of Cartan subalgebras in sl(6). As an application, we prove existence of a real 4-dimensional family of pairs of mutually unbiased bases in C^6, thus solving the long standing problem in Quantum Information Theory.

Generation of mutually unbiased bases as powers of a unitary matrix in 2-power dimensions

Rod Gow

Let q be a power of 2. We show by representation theory that there exists a q x q unitary matrix of multiplicative order q+1 whose powers generate q+1 pairwise mutually unbiased base in C^q. When q is a power of an odd prime, there is a q x q unitary matrix of multiplicative order q+1 whose first (q+1)/2 powers generate (q+1)/2 pairwise mutually unbiased bases. We also show how the existence of these matrices implies the existence of a special type of orthogonal decomposition with respect to the Killing form of the special linear and symplectic Lie algebras.

A gap for the maximum number of mutually unbiased bases

Mihály Weiner

A collection of pairwise mutually unbiased bases (in short: MUB) in d>1 dimensions may consist of at most d+1 bases. Such "complete" collections are known to exists in C^d when d is a power of a prime. However, in general little is known about the maximal number N(d) of bases that a collection of MUBs in C^d can have. In this work it is proved that a collection of d MUBs in C^d can be always completed. Hence N(d) cannot be d and when d>1 we have a dichotomy: either N(d)=d+1 (so that there exists a complete collection of MUBs), or N(d)\leq d-1. In the course of the proof an interesting new characterization is given for a linear subspace of M_d(C) to be a subalgebra.

On mutually unbiased bases

Rahim Taghikhani

Two orthonormal bases in the complex space of dimension d, are said to be mutually unbiased if the square of the magnitude of the inner product of any vector from one basis with any vector in other basis is equal to the reciprocal of the dimension d. Mutually unbiased bases are used for optimal state determination of mixed quantum states. It is known that in any dimension d, the number of mutually unbiased bases is at most d+1. Ivanovic found a complete set of mutually unbiased bases for prime dimensions. His construction was generalized by Wootters and Fields for prime power dimensions. There is a strong connection between maximally commuting bases of orthogonal unitary matrices and mutually unbiased bases. Based on this connection, there exits a constructive proof of the existence of a complete set of mutually unbiased bases for prime power dimensions. This thesis is an exploration on construction of mutually unbiased bases.

Covariant mutually unbiased bases

Claudio Carmeli, Jussi Schultz, Alessandro Toigo

The connection between maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in a prime-power dimensional Hilbert space and finite phase-space geometries is well known. In this article, we classify MUBs according to their degree of covariance with respect to the natural symmetries of a finite phase-space, which are the group of its affine symplectic transformations. We prove that there exist maximal sets of MUBs that are covariant with respect to the full group only in odd prime-power dimensional spaces, and in this case, their equivalence class is actually unique. Despite this limitation, we show that in dimension [Formula: see text] covariance can still be achieved by restricting to proper subgroups of the symplectic group, that constitute the finite analogues of the oscillator group. For these subgroups, we explicitly construct the unitary operators yielding the covariance.

The Mutually Unbiased Bases Revisited

Monique Combescure

The study of Mutually Unbiased Bases continues to be developed vigorously, and presents several challenges in the Quantum Information Theory. Two orthonormal bases in $\mathbb C^d, B {and} B'$ are said mutually unbiased if $\forall b\in B, b'\in B'$ the scalar product $b\cdot b'$ has modulus $d^{-1/2}$. In particular this property has been introduced in order to allow an optimization of the measurement-driven quantum evolution process of any state $ψ\in \mathbb C^d$ when measured in the mutually unbiased bases $B\_{j} {of} \mathbb C^d$. At present it is an open problem to find the maximal umber of mutually Unbiased Bases when $d$ is not a power of a prime number. \noindent In this article, we revisit the problem of finding Mutually Unbiased Bases (MUB's) in any dimension $d$. The method is very elementary, using the simple unitary matrices introduced by Schwinger in 1960, together with their diagonalizations. The Vandermonde matrix based on the $d$-th roots of unity plays a major role. This allows us to show the existence of a set of 3 MUB's in any dimension, to give conditions for existence of more than 3 MUB's for $d$ even or odd number, and to recover the known result of existence of $d+1$ MUB's for $d$ a prime number. Furthermore the construction of these MUB's is very explicit. As a by-product, we recover results about Gauss Sums, known in number theory, but which have apparently not been previously derived from MUB properties.

We establish a connection between the problem of constructing maximal collections of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) and an open problem in the theory of Lie algebras.
