Abstract

Manipulation of infinite-dimensional quantum systems is important to controlling complex quantum dynamics with many practical physical and chemical backgrounds. In this paper, a general investigation is casted to the controllability problem of quantum systems evolving on infinite-dimensional manifolds. Recognizing that such problems are related with infinite-dimensional controllability algebras, we introduce an algebraic mathematical framework to describe quantum control systems possessing such controllability algebras. Then we present the concept of smooth controllability on infinite-dimensional manifolds, and draw the main result on approximate strong smooth controllability. This is a nontrivial extension of the existing controllability results based on the analysis over finite-dimensional vector spaces to analysis over infinite-dimensional manifolds. It also opens up many interesting problems for future studies.

New Results on Smooth Controllability of Quantum Mechanical Systems

Re-Bing Wu, Tzyh‐Jong Tarn, Chunwen Li

Quantum control over scattering states has potentially important applications in the future quantum technologies. However, a rigorous theoretical study is difficult due to the nonlocal nature of scattering states. This paper introduces a mathematical framework to deal with general quantum control systems that allow noncompact and infinite dimensional controllability Lie algebras, within which the generated infinite dimensional Lie groups are used to represent flows of scattering states. Then we present the concept of smooth controllability on infinite dimensional manifolds, and a criterion for approximate smooth strong controllability. This is a nontrivial extension of the existing results of controllability based on the analysis over finite dimensional vector spaces to analysis over infinite dimensional manifolds. It also opens up many interesting problems for future studies.

CONTROL OF QUANTUM SYSTEMS

J. W. Clark, Dennis G. Lucarelli, Tzyh‐Jong Tarn

A quantum system subject to external fields is said to be controllable if these fields can be adjusted to guide the state vector to a desired destination in the state space of the system. Fundamental results on controllability are reviewed against the background of recent ideas and advances in two seemingly disparate endeavours: (i) laser control of chemical reactions and (ii) quantum computation. Using Lie-algebraic methods, sufficient conditions have been derived for global controllability on a finite-dimensional manifold of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space, in the case that the Hamiltonian and control operators, possibly unbounded, possess a common dense domain of analytic vectors. Some simple examples are presented. A synergism between quantum control and quantum computation is creating a host of exciting new opportunities for both activities. The impact of these developments on computational many-body theory could be profound.

Controllability of quantum mechanical systems with continuous spectra

TZYH JONG TARN, J. W. Clark, Dennis G. Lucarelli

The property of controllability of quantum systems is revisited. In the case of a system having this property, couplings to external agents are available whose adjustment can guide the state to any chosen target on a suitably defined manifold (or arbitrarily close to any such target) at any chosen time. With due consideration to unbounded operators corresponding to physical observables possessing continuous spectra, sufficient conditions for controllability based on Lie-algebraic arguments are obtained. The results are not limited to finite-dimensional systems, nor to infinite-dimensional systems with discrete spectra. The applicability of the results to systems with both bound and scattering states is demonstrated for the case of the one-dimensional Poschl-Teller potential. Attention is also directed to transitivity of the pertinent Lie algebra of a system without drift as a necessary and sufficient condition for controllability.

Quantum control of infinite-dimensional many-body systems

Roger S. Bliss, Daniel Klaus Burgarth

A major challenge to the control of infinite-dimensional quantum systems is the irreversibility which is often present in the system dynamics. Here we consider systems with discrete-spectrum Hamiltonians operating over a Schwartz space domain and show that by utilizing the implications of the quantum recurrence theorem this irreversibility may be overcome, in the case of individual states more generally, but also in certain specified cases over larger subsets of the Hilbert space. We discuss briefly the possibility of using these results in the control of infinite-dimensional coupled harmonic oscillators and also draw attention to some of the issues and open questions arising from this and related work.

The controllability of infinite quantum systems

Roger W. Brockett, Chitra Rangan, Anthony M. Bloch

Quantum phenomena of interest in connection with computation and communication often deal with transfers between eigenstates. For systems having only a finite number of states, the quantum evolution equation is finite-dimensional and the results on controllability on Lie groups as worked out decades ago provide most of what is needed in so far as controllability of dissipationless systems is concerned. However, for infinite-dimensional evolution of quantum systems, many difficulties, both conceptual and technical, remain. In this paper we organize some recent results from the physics literature in control theoretic terms and emphasize the type of analysis needed to go beyond what basic differential geometry can provide. In particular, we analyze from a controllability point of view the important results of Law and Eberly, and discuss the problem of controllability of quantum systems subject to the constraint that the trajectories must lie in pre-defined subspaces. The study of this problem is motivated by recent work on the design of quantum computers that avoid loss of coherence by operating in decoherence free subspaces.

On the controllability of quantum-mechanical systems

Garng M. Huang, TZYH JONG TARN, John W. Clark

The systems-theoretic concept of controllability is elaborated for quantum-mechanical systems, sufficient conditions being sought under which the state vector ψ can be guided in time to a chosen point in the Hilbert space ℋ of the system. The Schrödinger equation for a quantum object influenced by adjustable external fields provides a state-evolution equation which is linear in ψ and linear in the external controls (thus a bilinear control system). For such systems the existence of a dense analytic domain 𝒟ω in the sense of Nelson, together with the assumption that the Lie algebra associated with the system dynamics gives rise to a tangent space of constant finite dimension, permits the adaptation of the geometric approach developed for finite-dimensional bilinear and nonlinear control systems. Conditions are derived for global controllability on the intersection of 𝒟ω with a suitably defined finite-dimensional submanifold of the unit sphere Sℋ in ℋ. Several soluble examples are presented to illuminate the general theoretical results.
