Multipartite reduction criteria for separability

Abstract

The reduction criterion is a well-known necessary condition for separable states, and states violating this condition are entangled and also 1-distillable. In this paper we introduce a set of necessary conditions for separability of multipartite states, obtained from a set of positive but not completely positive maps. These conditions can be thought of as generalizations of the reduction criterion to multipartite systems. We use tripartite Werner states as an example to investigate the entanglement detecting powers of some of these conditions, and we also look at what these conditions mean in terms of distillation. Finally, we show that these maps can be used to give a partial solution to the subsystem problem, as described by Butterley et al.

Separability of mixed quantum states: linear contractions approach

Recently, a new and powerful separability criterion was introduced in [O. Rudolph, quant-ph/0202121] and [Chen {\it et al.}, quant-ph/0205017]. Composing the main idea behind the above criterion and the necessary and sufficient condition in terms of positive maps, we provide a characterization of separable states by means of linear contractions. The latter need not be positive maps. We extend the idea to multipartite systems, and find that, somewhat suprisingly, partial realigment (unlike partial transposition) can detect genuinely triparite entanglement. We also show that for multipartite system any permutation of indices of density matrix leads to separability criterion.

Characterization of distillability of entanglement in terms of positive maps

Lieven Clarisse

A necessary and sufficient condition for one-distillability is formulated in terms of decomposable positive maps. As an application we provide insight into why all states violating the reduction criterion map are distillable and demonstrate how to construct such maps in a systematic way. We establish a connection between a number of existing results, which leads to an elementary proof for the characterization of distillability in terms of two-positive maps.

Reduction criterion of separability and limits for a class of protocols of entanglement distillation

Michał Horodecki, Paweł Horodecki

We analyse the problem of distillation of entanglement of mixed states in higher dimensional compound systems. Employing the positive maps method [M. Horodecki et al., Phys. Lett. A 223 1 (1996)] we introduce and analyse a criterion of separability which relates the structures of the total density matrix and its reductions. We show that any state violating the criterion can be distilled by suitable generalization of the two-qubit protocol which distills any inseparable two-qubit state. Conversely, all the states which can be distilled by such a protocol must violate the criterion. The proof involves construction of the family of states which are invariant under transformation $\varrho\to U\otimes U^*\varrho U^\dagger\otimes U^{*\dagger}$ where $U$ is a unitary transformation and star denotes complex conjugation. The states are related to the depolarizing channel generalized to non-binary case.

Reduction criterion of separability and limits for a class of distillation protocols

The criterion also singles out all the states that can be distilled by a class of protocols. The proof involves construction of the family of states that are invariant under transformation $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\varrho}}U\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{U}^{*}\ensuremath{\varrho}{U}^{\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{U}^{*\ifmmode\dagger\else\textdagger\fi{}},$ where U is a unitary transformation and the asterisk denotes complex conjugation. Separability of Mixed Quantum States: Linear Contractions and Permutation Criteria

Michał Horodecki, Paweł Horodecki, Ryszard Horodecki

Recently, a powerful separability criterion was introduced by O. Rudolf in [5] and by K. Chen et al. in [6] — basing on realignment of elements of density matrix. Composing the main idea behind the above criterion and the necessary and sufficient condition in terms of positive maps, we provide a characterization of separable states by means of linear contractions. The latter need not be positive maps. We extend the idea to multipartite systems, and find that, somewhat suprisingly, partial realigment (unlike partial transposition) can detect genuinely tri-parite entanglement. We generalize it by introducing a family of so called permutation separability criteria for multipartite states. Namely, any permutation of indices of density matrix written in product basis leads to a separability criterion. Partial transpose and realignment criterion are special cases of permutation criteria.

Quantum separability criteria for arbitrary-dimensional multipartite states

We present separability criteria for both bipartite and multipartite quantum states. These criteria include the criteria based on the correlation matrix and its generalized form as special cases. We show by detailed examples that our criteria are more powerful than the positive partial transposition criterion, the realignment criterion, and the criteria based on the correlation matrices.
