Entanglement in SU(2)-invariant quantum systems: The positive partial transpose criterion and others

Abstract

We study entanglement in mixed bipartite quantum states which are invariant under simultaneous SU(2) transformations in both subsystems. Previous results on the behavior of such states under partial transposition are substantially extended. The spectrum of the partial transpose of a given SU(2)-invariant density matrix $\ensuremath{\rho}$ is entirely determined by the diagonal elements of $\ensuremath{\rho}$ in a basis of tensor-product states of both spins with respect to a common quantization axis. We construct a set of operators which act as entanglement witnesses on SU(2)-invariant states. A sufficient criterion for $\ensuremath{\rho}$ having a negative partial transpose is derived in terms of a simple spin correlator. The same condition is a necessary criterion for the partial transpose to have the maximum number of negative eigenvalues. Moreover, we derive a series of sum rules which uniquely determine the eigenvalues of the partial transpose in terms of a system of linear equations. Finally we compare our findings with other entanglement criteria including the reduction criterion, the majorization criterion, and the recently proposed local uncertainty relations.

Entanglement in SU(2)-invariant quantum spin systems

John Schliemann

We analyze the entanglement of SU(2)-invariant density matrices of two spins ${S}_{1},$ ${S}_{2}$ using the Peres-Horodecki criterion. Such density matrices arise from thermal equilibrium states of isotropic-spin systems. The partial transpose of such a state has the same multiplet structure and degeneracies as the original matrix with the eigenvalue of largest multiplicity being non-negative. The case ${S}_{1}=S,$ ${S}_{2}=1/2$ can be solved completely and is discussed in detail with respect to isotropic Heisenberg spin models. Moreover, in this case the Peres-Horodecki criterion turns out to be a sufficient condition for nonseparability. We also characterize SU(2)-invariant states of two spins of length 1.

Entanglement in SO(3)-invariant bipartite quantum systems

Heinz‐Peter Breuer

The structure of the state spaces of bipartite $N\ensuremath{\bigotimes}N$ quantum systems which are invariant under product representations of the group SO(3) of three-dimensional proper rotations is analyzed. The subsystems represent particles of arbitrary spin $j$ which transform according to an irreducible representation of the rotation group. A positive map $\ensuremath{\vartheta}$ is introduced which describes the time reversal symmetry of the local states and which is unitarily equivalent to the transposition of matrices. It is shown that the partial time reversal transformation ${\ensuremath{\vartheta}}_{2}=I\ensuremath{\bigotimes}\ensuremath{\vartheta}$ acting on the composite system can be expressed in terms of the invariant $6\text{\ensuremath{-}}j$ symbols introduced by Wigner into the quantum theory of angular momentum. This fact enables a complete geometrical construction of the manifold of states with positive partial transposition and of the sets of separable and entangled states of $4\ensuremath{\bigotimes}4$ systems. The separable states are shown to form a three-dimensional prism and a three-dimensional manifold of bound entangled states is identified. A positive map is obtained which yields, together with the time reversal, a necessary and sufficient condition for the separability of states of $4\ensuremath{\bigotimes}4$ systems. The relations to the reduction criterion and to the recently proposed cross norm criterion for separability are discussed.

Optimal Entanglement Certification from Moments of the Partial Transpose

Xiao‐Dong Yu, Satoya Imai, Otfried Gühne

For the certification and benchmarking of medium-size quantum devices, efficient methods to characterize entanglement are needed. In this context, it has been shown that locally randomized measurements on a multiparticle quantum system can be used to obtain valuable information on the so-called moments of the partially transposed quantum state. This allows one to infer some separability properties of a state, but how to use the given information in an optimal and systematic manner has yet to be determined. We propose two general entanglement detection methods based on the moments of the partially transposed density matrix. The first method is based on the Hankel matrices and provides a family of entanglement criteria, of which the lowest order reduces to the known p_{3}-positive-partial-transpose criterion proposed in A. Elben et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 200501 (2020)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.125.200501]. The second method is optimal and gives necessary and sufficient conditions for entanglement based on some moments of the partially transposed density matrix.

Covariance matrix entanglement criterion for an arbitrary set of operators

V.K. Tripathi, Chandrashekar Radhakrishnan, Tim Byrnes

Abstract A criterion for entanglement detection based on covariance matrices for an arbitrary set of observables is formulated. The method generalizes the covariance matrix entanglement criterion by Simon (2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 2726) to a more general set of operators using the positive partial transpose test for the covariance matrix. The relation is found by starting from the generalized uncertainty relation for multiple operators, and taking the partial transpose on the bipartition. The method is highly efficient and versatile in the sense that the set of measurement operators can be freely chosen, and there is no constraint on the commutation relations. The main restriction on the chosen set of measurement operators is that the correlators and expectation values of the partially transposed observable operators can be evaluated. The method is particularly suited for systems with higher dimensionality since the computations do not scale with the dimension of the Hilbert space—rather they scale with the number of chosen observables. We illustrate the approach by examining the entanglement between two spin ensembles, and show that it detects entanglement in a basis independent way.

Separability of Mixed Quantum States: Linear Contractions and Permutation Criteria

Michał Horodecki, Paweł Horodecki, Ryszard Horodecki

Recently, a powerful separability criterion was introduced by O. Rudolf in [5] and by K. Chen et al. in [6] — basing on realignment of elements of density matrix. Composing the main idea behind the above criterion and the necessary and sufficient condition in terms of positive maps, we provide a characterization of separable states by means of linear contractions. The latter need not be positive maps. We extend the idea to multipartite systems, and find that, somewhat suprisingly, partial realigment (unlike partial transposition) can detect genuinely tri-parite entanglement. We generalize it by introducing a family of so called permutation separability criteria for multipartite states. Namely, any permutation of indices of density matrix written in product basis leads to a separability criterion. Partial transpose and realignment criterion are special cases of permutation criteria.
