Abstract

We study quantum-noise squeezing and quantum correlations of gap solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice. By employing a linearized quantum theory we find that quantum-noise squeezing of gap solitons, produced during their evolution, is enhanced compared with the atomic solitons in a lattice-free case due to intrasoliton structure of quantum correlations induced by the Bragg scattering in the periodic potential. We also show that nonlinear interaction of gap solitons in dynamically stable bound states can produce strong atom-number correlation between the soliton pairs.

Spin squeezing of matter-wave gap solitons

We model the quantum dynamics of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb in a one dimensional optical lattice. Using the truncated Wigner approach we find that for condensates with ferromagnetic interactions a stable spin squeezed gap soliton can be formed via a triple gap soliton interaction process.

Quantum effects in the dynamical localization of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We study quantum effects in the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded onto the edge of a Brillouin zone of a one-dimensional periodic potential created by an optical lattice. We show that quantum fluctuations trigger the dynamical instability of the Bloch states of the condensate and can lead to the generation of arrays of matter-wave gap solitons. Our approach also allows us to study the instability-induced anomalous heating of the condensate at the edge of the Brillouin zone and growth of the uncondensed atomic fraction. We demonstrate that there are regimes in which the heating effects do not suppress the formation of the localised states. We show that a phase imprinting technique can ensure the formation of gap soliton trains after short evolution times and at fixed positions.

Photonic crystals for matter waves: Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Elena A. Ostrovskaya, Yuri S. Kivshar

We overview our recent theoretical studies on nonlinear atom optics of the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into optical lattices. In particular, we describe the band-gap spectrum and nonlinear localization of BECs in one- and two-dimensional optical lattices. We discuss the structure and stability properties of spatially localized states (matter-wave solitons) in 1D lattices, as well as trivial and vortex-like bound states of 2D gap solitons. To highlight similarities between the behavior of coherent light and matter waves in periodic potentials, we draw useful parallels with the physics of coherent light waves in nonlinear photonic crystals and optically-induced photonic lattices.

Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices: Band-gap structure and solitons

We analyze the existence and stability of spatially extended (Bloch-type) and localized states of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into an optical lattice. In the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a periodic potential, we study the band-gap structure of the matter-wave spectrum in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. We demonstrate the existence of families of spatially localized matter-wave gap solitons, and analyze their stability in different band gaps, for both repulsive and attractive atomic interactions.

Effect of interaction strength on gap solitons of Bose–Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Yang Ru-shu, Yang Jiang-he

We have developed a systematic analytical approach to the study on the dynamic properties of the linear and the nonlinear excitations for quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in optical lattices. A novel linear dispersion relation and an algebraic soliton solution of the condensate are derived analytically under consideration of Bose–Einstein condensate with a periodic potential. By analysing the soliton solution, we find that the interatomic interaction strength has an important effect on soliton dynamic properties of Bose–Einstein condensate.

Dark matter-wave gap solitons in dense ultracold atoms trapped by a one-dimensional optical lattice

Jiawei Li, Jianhua Zeng

Optical lattices have been used as a versatile toolbox to control Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in recent years, and a wealth of emergent nonlinear phenomena have been found, including bright gap solitons and dark ones, among which the former has been realized in experiments. The latter, however, has only theoretical results and its fundamental properties are still not well understood. Here we theoretically and numerically explore an open issue of creating stable matter-wave dark gap solitons in a one-dimensional optical lattice, onto which the BECs with self-defocusing quintic nonlinearity are loaded. Using linear-stability analysis and direct simulations, the formation, structures, and properties of dark gap solitons in quintic nonlinearity have been compared to those upheld by cubic Kerr nonlinearity. In particular, we uncover that the dark gap solitons and soliton clusters are robustly stable in the first finite band gap of the underlying linear spectrum, and are hard to be stabilized in the second gap. The predicted dark gap solitons are observable in current experiments on dense ultracold atoms, using an optical lattice technique, and in the optics domain for nonlinear light propagation in periodic optical media with quintic nonlinearity.
