Transfer and computation of optical topological charges via light pulse buffer memory in an electromagnetically-induced-transparency solid

We verified that optical topological charges are conserved in a two-step light-pulse storage and retrieval process based on the electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) effect in a Pr${}^{3+}$:${\mathrm{Y}}_{2}{\mathrm{SiO}}_{5}$ crystal. Based on this conservation law, one could transfer topological charges from the interacting beams, which may not be overlapped in space and time domains, to the targeted output signal beam, and algebraic operations such as summation and subtraction of topological charges carried by the interacting beams were demonstrated via the EIT-assisted two-step light-pulse storage-retrieval process. The results may be useful for classical and quantum information processing based on optical topological charge buffer memory in EIT media.

Quantum theory for pulse propagation in electromagnetically-induced-transparency media beyond the adiabatic approximation

You-Lin Chuang, Ite A. Yu, Ray‐Kuang Lee

Beyond the adiabatic approximation, we develop a quantum theory for optical probe pulses propagating in electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) media by including Langevin noise operators and asking the field operator to satisfy bosonic commutation relation. Influences on the degradation of quantum noise squeezing from optical depth of atomic ensemble, strength of control field, and ground-state decoherence are studied in the slow light, as well as storage and retrieval, for a squeezed probe pulse. Moreover, to give guidelines for realization of quantum interfaces based on EIT media, we demonstrate that the quantum squeezing of output probe pulses could be preserved with a stronger classical control field.

The Construction and Characterization of a Magneto-Optical Trap for Rubidium-87 and Electromagnetically-Induced Transparency in Rubidium-87 in a Vapor Cell

Yu Liu

Recent years have observed fast developments in neutral atomic vapor based quantum information storage technology. The technique utilizes light fields in the optical wavelength region as signal carrier and retriever and neutral atomic systems (e.g. single atoms, ensembles of atoms, atom-like defects in solids) as storage media. Photons are robust carriers of information due to their high velocity (c = 2.998 x 108 m/s) and ease of transportation (they propagate rectilinearly with low loss). Their high mobility, however, makes it a challenging task to spatially localize and therefore store them. Atoms (or atom-like systems), on the other hand, can be easily localized in space while providing quantum states accessible to photons and therefore are ideal candidates for storage media. Electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) is a light-induced atomic coherence phenomenon that dramatically modifies the optical properties of an atomic medium to a weak probe field by the application of a strong coupling field. As a probe pulse propagates in an EIT medium it experiences ultraslow group velocity and generates a copropagating spin wave. These consequences of EIT can be exploited for light pulse storage and retrieval in an atomic medium.
