Nonlinear Photonic Crystals as a Source of Entangled Photons

Abstract

Nonlinear photonic crystals can be used to provide phase matching for frequency conversion in optically isotropic materials. The phase-matching mechanism proposed here is a combination of form birefringence and phase velocity dispersion in a periodic structure. Since the phase matching relies on the geometry of the photonic crystal, it becomes possible to use highly nonlinear materials. This is illustrated considering a one-dimensional periodic Al0.4Ga0.6As/air structure for the generation of 1.5 microm light. We show that phase-matching conditions used in schemes to create entangled photon pairs can be achieved in photonic crystals.

A source of polarization entangled photon pairs based on two-dimensional photonic crystals

Li Xiao, Yin Wang, Wei Zhang +2 more

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion in two-dimensional photonic crystal made of semiconductor material with large quadratic nonlinear susceptibility is proposed to generate polarization entangled photon pairs. On one hand, the large quadratic nonlinear susceptibility of AlGaAs crystal insures the high nonlinear conversion efficiency; on the other hand, the abnormal dispersion property of two-dimensional photonic crystal causes the satisfaction of the phase-matching condition. In particular, the dispersion property sensitively depends on the structure of photonic crystal. Then the walk-off between the down-converted photons with orthogonal polarizations can be minimized through appropriate structure parameter design; hence compensation measures to mitigate labeling effect on polarization entangled photon pairs can be eliminated.

Compact polarization-entangled photon source based on coexisting noncritically birefringent and quasi phase matching in a nonlinear crystal

Chun-Yao Yang, Chao-Yuan Wang, Kuan‐Heng Lin +6 more

Polarization-entangled photons are indispensable to numerous quantum technologies and fundamental studies. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate what we believe to be a novel source that generates collinear polarization-entangled photons by simultaneously achieving two distinct types of phase-matching conditions (noncritically birefringent and quasi phase matching) in a periodically poled nonlinear crystal with a large poling period of 2 mm. The photon pairs are generated in a polarization-entangled state with a fidelity and concurrence of 0.998 and 0.935, respectively, and violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality by 84 standard deviations. The compact source does not require interferometer, delicate domain structures, or post selection, and is advantageous for scalable quantum computing and communication, where many replicas or chip-scale devices are needed.

Bloch theory of entangled photon generation in nonlinear photonic crystals

William T. M. Irvine, M. J. A. de Dood, Dirk Bouwmeester

We present a quantum-mechanical description of parametric down conversion and phase matching of Bloch waves in nonlinear photonic crystals. We discuss the theory in one-dimensional Bragg structures giving a recipe for calculating the down-converted emission strength and direction. We exemplify the discussion by making explicit analytical predictions for the emission amplitude and direction from a one-dimensional structure that consists of alternating layers of ${\mathrm{Al}}_{0.4}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{0.6}\mathrm{As}$ and air. We show that the emission is suitable for the extraction of polarization-entangled photons.

Generation of path-polarization hyperentanglement using quasi-phase-matching in quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal

Guangqiang He, Chengrui Zhu, Yao Jiang +3 more

A compact scheme for the generation of path-polarization entangled photon pairs is proposed by using a quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal to simultaneously accomplish four spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes. Moreover, we report experimental scheme to measure the polarization entanglement and path entanglement separately and theoretically get numerical results that verify some predictions about the hyperentanglement. This method can be expanded for the generation of multi-partite and two-photon path-polarization hyperentanglement in a single quasi-periodic nonlinear photonic crystal structure. This compact quantum light source can be used as a significant ingredient in quantum information science.
