The time evolution of coherent atomic system and probe light in an EIT medium

Abstract

The adiabatic solutions of Maxwell-Bloch equation governing the three-level EIT medium is presented. The time evolution of the density matrix elements of the EIT system and the probe light is thus investigated by using the adiabatic approximation formulation and the slowly varying envelope condition.

Effective two-level Maxwell-Bloch formalism and coherent pulse propagation in a driven three-level medium

Victor V. Kozlov, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Marlan O. Scully

An effective two-level Maxwell-Bloch formalism is developed to describe various time-dependent phenomena in a three-level V-type system. The Maxwell-Bloch equations govern the temporal evolution of a probe field while a strong driving field is applied on the adjacent transition. The main assumption adopted throughout the paper is that the spontaneous decay rate on the coherently driven transition exceeds the decay rate on the probe transition as well as inverse time variations of both pulses. It is shown that the probe pulse interacts with such a medium in a manner similar to that in a self-induced transparency. An amplification without inversion of a relatively short probe pulse while propagating through an optically thick atomic medium is analyzed.

Chaotic dynamics in the Maxwell-Bloch equations

Darryl D. Holm, Gregor Kovačič

In the slowly varying envelope approximation and the rotating wave approximation for the Maxwell-Bloch equations, we describe how the presence of a small-amplitude probe laser in an excited, two-level, resonant medium leads to homoclinic chaos in the laser-matter dynamics. We also describe a derivation of the Maxwell-Bloch equations from an action principle.

Adomian’s decomposition method for electromagnetically induced transparency

Yee-Mou Kao, Tsin-Fu Jiang, Ite A. Yu

We developed the Adomian's decomposition method to work for the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) problem. The method is general and capable to solve the coupled nonlinear partial differential equations for a light pulse passing through a three-level -type coherent medium. This EIT system is described by the coupled Maxwell-Schrödinger equations and optical Bloch equations. In the weak probe field case, the results agree with perturbation solutions and experimental data. In the stronger probe field case while perturbation may fail, our results reproduce experimental data well. With the techniques of spatial and time partitions, we extend the decomposition method that will be versatile for the investigation of the light pulse propagating through a coherent atomic medium.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Huy Bang, Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such medium, i.e., the EIT effect is established. Under EIT conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. The general optical response of the electric permittivity corresponding to both the probe and the control fields is addressed based on the numerical results of the equation of motion of the density matrix. The probe and the control fields are treated in the same way, in which the influence of the probe field on the control field (and vice versa) is considered. The optical be- havior of controlling light with light can be a fundamental mechanism for new photonic and quantum optical device design.
