Abstract

We report an experimental study of group-velocity dispersion effect on an entangled two-photon wave packet, generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and propagating through a dispersive medium. Even in the case of using cw laser beam for pump, the biphoton wave packet and the second-order correlation function spread significantly. The study and understanding of this phenomenon is of great importance for quantum information applications, such as quantum communication and distant clock synchronization.

“Spreading” of a biphoton in a group-velocity-dispersion medium and two-photon interference

L. A. Krivitskiı̆, Maria V. Chekhova

It is shown that two-photon Bell states can be prepared by “spreading” of a two-photon wave packet (biphoton) in a dispersive medium without compensating for group delays between photons with orthogonal polarizations or using narrow-band filters but by selecting the time correlation function. This is possible because two-photon interference effects are manifested in the shape of the time correlation function of intensity due to its spreading.

Entangled photons

Based on the quantum behavior of entangled photon pairs generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion, this paper reviews the concept of effective two-photon wavefunction or biphoton wavepacket and emphasize the very different physics associated with the entangled two-photon system and with its "individual" subsystems. Experimental approaches for Bell state preparation, pumped by continuous wave and ultrashort pulse, and the propagation of biphoton wavepacket in dispersive media are discussed.

Dispersion Spreading of Biphotons in Optical Fibers and Two-Photon Interference

G. Brida, Maria V. Chekhova, Marco Genovese +2 more

We present the first observation of two-photon polarization interference structure in the second-order Glauber correlation function of two-photon light generated via type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. In order to obtain this result, two-photon light is transmitted through an optical fiber and the coincidence distribution is analyzed by means of the start-stop method. Beyond the experimental demonstration of an interesting effect in quantum optics, these results also have considerable relevance for quantum communications.

Coherence Properties of Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion Pumped by 1 Multi-Mode cw Diode Laser

Osung Kwon, Young-Sik Ra, Yoon-Ho Kim

Coherence properties of the photon pair generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by a multi-mode cw diode laser are studied with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Each photon of the pair enters a different input port of the interferometer and the biphoton coherence properties are studied with a two-photon detector placed at one output port. When the photon pair simultaneously enters the interferometer, periodic recurrence of the biphoton de Broglie wave packet is observed, closely resembling the coherence properties of the pump diode laser. These properties could be useful for building engineered entangled photon sources based on diode laser-pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion.

Biphoton wave packets in parametric down-conversion: Spectral and temporal structure and degree of entanglement

J. M. Mikhailova, P. A. Volkov, Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov

We investigate spectral and temporal features and entanglement of biphoton wave packets formed in spontaneous parametric down-conversion with a pulsed laser pump. The degree of entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable parameter $R$ defined as the ratio of the coincidence and single-particle spectral widths. In the frequency representation, this parameter is found as a function of the pump-pulse duration $\ensuremath{\tau}$. The function $R(\ensuremath{\tau})$ is shown to have a minimum and even in the minimum, at rather natural conditions, the degree of entanglement is found to be very high $({R}_{\mathrm{min}}=73)$. The Schmidt number $K$ is found analytically for both short and long pump pulses and interpolated for arbitrary pulse durations. All functional dependences of $R$ and $K$ are found to be identical and numerical coefficients are found to be rather close. Two-time temporal wave function of a biphoton state is investigated in detail, and a rather significant difference between the cases of short and long pump pulses is found to occur. In the case of long pulses, the temporal parameter ${R}_{t}$ (defined as the ratio of durations of the single-particle and coincidence signals) is shown to be very close to the Schmidt number $K$.
