Casimir-Polder potentials as entanglement probe

Abstract

We have considered the interaction of a pair of spatially separated two-level atoms with the electromagnetic field in its vacuum state and we have analyzed the amount of entanglement induced between the two atoms by the non local field fluctuations. This has allowed us to characterize the quantum nature of the non local correlations of the electromagnetic field vacuum state as well as to link the induced quantum entanglement with Casimir-Polder potentials.

Vacuum field correlations and three-body Casimir–Polder potential with one excited atom

Roberto Passante, Franco Persico, Lucia Rizzuto

The three-body Casimir–Polder potential between one excited and two ground-state atoms is evaluated. A physical model based on the dressed field correlations of vacuum fluctuations is used, generalizing a model previously introduced for three ground-state atoms. Although the three-body potential with one excited atom is already known in the literature, our model gives new insights on the nature of non-additive Casimir–Polder forces with one or more excited atoms.

Nonlocal field correlations and dynamical Casimir–Polder forces between one excited- and two ground-state atoms

Roberto Passante, Franco Persico, Lucia Rizzuto

The problem of nonlocality in the dynamical three-body Casimir–Polder interaction between an initially excited and two ground-state atoms is considered. It is shown that the nonlocal spatial correlations of the field emitted by the excited atom during the initial part of its spontaneous decay may become manifest in the three-body interaction. The observability of this new phenomenon is discussed.

Atom-atom entanglement generated at early times by two photon emission

Juan León, Carlos Sabín

We analyze entanglement generation between a pair of neutral two level atoms that are initially excited in a common electromagnetic vacuum. The nonlocal correlations that appear due to the interaction with the field can become entanglement when the field state is known. We distinguish two different situations: in the first, the field remains in the vacuum state, and second two photons are present in the final state. In both cases we study the dependence of the entanglement with time and interatomic distance, at ranges related with locality issues.

Casimir-Polder interaction between two atoms in electromagnetic fields

Yu. B. Sherkunov

We reexamine the dispersion interaction between two atoms in external electromagnetic fields, provided the atoms are not in the equilibrium with the field. We show that the processes of absorption and spontaneous/stimulated emission should be taken into account in the case of non-equilibrium dynamics.

Casimir-Polder–induced Rabi oscillations

M. Donaire, M.–P. Gorza, A. Maury +2 more

We show that the Casimir-Polder interaction may induce coherent oscillations between degenerate atomic states. We illustrate this effect by computing the Casimir-Polder-induced Rabi frequency on a 87 Rb atom as it interacts with a reflecting surface. The atom oscillates between two Zeeman sublevels of its ground state undergoing a periodic exchange of angular momentum with the vacuum photons.

Causality, non-locality and three-body Casimir–Polder energy between three ground-state atoms

Roberto Passante, Franco Persico, Lucia Rizzuto

The problem of relativistic causality in the time-dependent three-body Casimir–Polder interaction energy between three atoms, initially in their bare ground-state, is discussed. It is shown that the non-locality of the spatial correlations of the electromagnetic field emitted by the atoms during their dynamical self-dressing may become manifest in the dynamical three-body Casimir–Polder interaction energy between the three atoms.
