Abstract

We address the dynamics induced by collective atomic recoil in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of radiation losses and atomic decoherence. In particular, we focus on the linear regime of the lasing mechanism, and analyze the effects of losses and decoherence on the generation of entanglement. The dynamics is that of three bosons, two atomic modes interacting with a single-mode radiation field, coupled with a bath of oscillators. The resulting three-mode dissipative Master equation is solved analytically in terms of the Wigner function. We examine in details the two complementary limits of high-$Q$ cavity and bad cavity, the latter corresponding to the so-called superradiant regime, both in the quasiclassical and quantum regimes. We found that three-mode entanglement as well as two-mode atom-atom and atom-radiation entanglement is generally robust against losses and decoherence, thus making the present system a good candidate for the experimental observation of entanglement in condensate systems. In particular, steady-state entanglement may be obtained both between atoms with opposite momenta and between atoms and photons.

Entanglement in a Bose–Einstein condensate by collective atomic recoil

We address the interaction between a Bose–Einstein condensate and a single-mode quantized radiation field in the presence of a strong far off-resonant pump laser. The generation of atom–atom and atom–field entanglement is demonstrated in the linear regime. The effects of cavity losses are taken into account and an analytic solution of the corresponding master equation is given in terms of the Wigner function of the system.

The interaction between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a single-mode quantized radiation field in the presence of a strong far-off-resonant pump laser generates, in proper regimes, atom-atom and atom-field entanglement. Quantum fluctuations and entanglement in the collective atomic recoil laser using a Bose-Einstein condensate

N. Piovella, Mary M. Cola, R. Bonifacio

We present a quantum description of the interaction between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a single-mode quantized radiation field in the presence of a strong far-off-resonant pump laser. In the linear regime, the atomic medium is described approximately by two momentum states coupled to the radiation mode. We calculate the evolution of the operators in the Heisenberg picture and their expectation values, such as average and variance of the occupation numbers, atom-atom and atom-field correlations, and two-mode squeezing parameters. Then, we disentangle the evolution operator and obtain the exact evolution of the state vector in the linear regime. This allows us to demostrate that the system can be atom-atom or atom-field thermally entangled. We define the quasiclassical and the quantum recoil limits, for which explicit expressions of the average population numbers are obtained.

Decoherence effects in quantum nondemolition measurement induced entanglement between Bose–Einstein condensates

Shuai Gao, Ebubechukwu O. Ilo-Okeke, Yuping Mao +4 more

Abstract We study the robustness of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement induced entanglement between Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs). We consider an experimental scheme where two BECs are placed in the paths of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer, and a QND interaction creates entanglement between coherent light and the atoms. We analyze the two dominant channels of decoherence, atomic dephasing and photon loss on the entangled states produced by this scheme. We calculate the effect of dephasing on the variance and expectation values of the spin operators, entanglement and correlation criteria. Our analysis does not use the Holstein–Primakoff approximation, and is capable of modelling long light–atom interaction times, producing non-Gaussian states beyond the two-mode squeezed states. In the presence of dephasing, the entangled states are robust in the macroscopic limit as long as the dimensionless interaction time is less than 1 / N , where N is the number of atoms in the BEC. For photon loss, the entangled states generated by long interaction times show a remarkable robustness that makes the scheme promising for various quantum information applications.

Distributed entanglement induced by dissipative bosonic media

Li-Tuo Shen, Xin-Yu Chen, Zhen-Biao Yang +2 more

We describe a scheme with analytic result that allows to generate steady-state entanglement for two atoms over a dissipative bosonic medium. The resonant coupling between the mediating bosonic mode and cavity modes produces three collective atomic decay channels. This dissipative dynamics, together with the unitary process induced by classical microwave fields, drives the two atoms to the symmetric or asymmetric entangled steady state conditional upon the choice of the phases of the microwave fields. The effects on the steady-state entanglement of off-resonance mediating bosonic modes are analyzed. The entanglement can be obtained with high fidelity regardless of the initial state and there is a linear relation in the scaling of the fidelity with the cooperativity parameter. The fidelity is insensitive to the fluctuation of the Rabi frequencies of the classical driving fields.
