A Geometric Diagram of Separable States

Abstract

This paper present a geometric diagram of a separable state: If a mixed state $σ$ is separable, there are $2^{nS(σ)}$ linearly independant product vectors which span the same Hilbert space as the $2^{nS(σ)}$ ``likely'' strings of $σ^{\otimes n}$ do. This diagram results in a criterion for separability which is strictly stronger than the inorder criterion in [M.A. Nielsen and J. Kempe, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 5184 (2001)]. This means that the number of product bases of states of a system has close link to the nonlocality of the system.

Distillability of Inseparable Quantum Systems

We apply the inseparability criterion for $2 \times 2$ systems, local filtering and Bennett et al. purification protocol [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 76}, 722 (1996)] to show how to distill {\it any} inseparable $2\times 2$ system. The extended protocol is illustrated geometrically by means of the state parameters in the Hilbert-Schmidt space.

Geometric multiaxial representation of N -qubit mixed symmetric separable states

S P Suma, Swarnamala Sirsi, Subramanya Hegde +1 more

The study of $N$-qubit mixed symmetric separable states is a longstanding challenging problem as no unique separability criterion exists. In this regard, we take up the $N$-qubit mixed symmetric separable states for a detailed study as these states are of experimental importance and offer an elegant mathematical analysis since the dimension of the Hilbert space is reduced from ${2}^{N}$ to $N+1$. Since there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the spin-$j$ system and an $N$-qubit symmetric state, we employ Fano statistical tensor parameters for the parametrization of the spin-density matrix. Further, we use a geometric multiaxial representation (MAR) of the density matrix to characterize the mixed symmetric separable states. Since the separability problem is NP-hard, we choose to study it in the continuum limit where mixed symmetric separable states are characterized by the $P$-distribution function $\ensuremath{\lambda}(\ensuremath{\theta},\ensuremath{\phi})$. We show that the $N$-qubit mixed symmetric separable states can be visualized as a uniaxial system if the distribution function is independent of $\ensuremath{\theta}$ and $\ensuremath{\phi}$. We further choose a distribution function to be the most general positive function on a sphere and observe that the statistical tensor parameters characterizing the $N$-qubit symmetric system are the expansion coefficients of the distribution function. As an example for the discrete case, we investigate the MAR of a uniformly weighted two-qubit mixed symmetric separable state. We also observe that there exists a correspondence between the separability and classicality of states.

Volume of the set of separable states. II

Karol Życzkowski

The problem of how many entangled or, respectively, separable states there are in the set of all quantum states is investigated. We study to what extent the choice of a measure in the space of density matrices $\ensuremath{\varrho}$ describing N-dimensional quantum systems affects the results obtained. We demonstrate that the link between the purity of the mixed states and the probability of entanglement is not sensitive to the measure chosen. Since the criterion of partial transposition is not sufficient to distinguish all separable states for $N>~8$, we develop an efficient algorithm to calculate numerically the entanglement of formation of a given mixed quantum state, which allows us to compute the volume of separable states for $N=8$ and to estimate the volume of the bound entangled states in this case.

Nonlocality of orthogonal product basis quantum states

Zhichao Zhang, Fei Gao, Guojing Tian +2 more

In this paper, we mainly study the local indistinguishability of mutually orthogonal product basis quantum states in the high-dimensional quantum systems. In the Hilbert space of $3\ensuremath{\bigotimes}3$, Walgate and Hardy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 147901 (2002)] presented a very simple proof for nonlocality of nine orthogonal product basis quantum states which are given by Bennett et al. [Phys. Rev. A 59, 1070 (1999)]. In the quantum system of $d\ensuremath{\bigotimes}d$, where $d$ is odd, we construct ${d}^{2}$ orthogonal product basis quantum states and prove these states are locally indistinguishable. Then we are able to construct some locally indistinguishable product basis quantum states in the multipartite systems. All these results reveal the phenomenon of ``nonlocality without entanglement.''

State space structure of tripartite quantum systems

Hari krishnan S V, Ashish Ranjan, Manik Banik

State space structure of tripartite quantum systems is analyzed. In particular, it has been shown that the set of states separable across all the three bipartitions [say, ${\mathcal{B}}^{int}(ABC)$] is a strict subset of the set of states having positive partial transposition across the three bipartite cuts [say, ${\mathcal{P}}^{int}(ABC)$] for all the tripartite Hilbert spaces ${\mathbb{C}}_{A}^{{d}_{1}}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\mathbb{C}}_{B}^{{d}_{2}}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\mathbb{C}}_{C}^{{d}_{3}}$ with $min{{d}_{1},{d}_{2},{d}_{3}}\ensuremath{\ge}2$. The claim is proved by constructing a state belonging to the set ${\mathcal{P}}^{int}(ABC)$ but not to ${\mathcal{B}}^{int}(ABC)$. For ${({\mathbb{C}}^{d})}^{\ensuremath{\bigotimes}3}$ with $d\ensuremath{\ge}3$, the construction follows from a specific type of multipartite unextendible product bases. However, such a construction is not possible for ${({\mathbb{C}}^{2})}^{\ensuremath{\bigotimes}3}$ since bipartite systems ${\mathbb{C}}^{2}\ensuremath{\bigotimes}{\mathbb{C}}^{n}$ do not allow any unextendible product bases for arbitrary $n$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 5385 (1999)]. For the three-qubit system, we therefore come up with a different construction.
