Abstract

Marshall et al. gedanken experiment of the quantum superpposition of a mirror (oscilating part of a Michelson interferometer) interacting with single photon is consequently interpreted by relative decoherence.Such relative decoherence (based on the spontaneous superposition breaking (effective hiding)) on the photon (quantum object) caused by mirror (measurement device) is sufficient to model real measurement.

Towards Quantum Superpositions of a Mirror

William K. Marshall, Christoph Simon, Roger Penrose +1 more

We propose an experiment for creating quantum superposition states involving of the order of 10(14) atoms via the interaction of a single photon with a tiny mirror. This mirror, mounted on a high-quality mechanical oscillator, is part of a high-finesse optical cavity which forms one arm of a Michelson interferometer. By observing the interference of the photon only, one can study the creation and decoherence of superpositions involving the mirror. A detailed analysis of the requirements shows that the experiment is within reach using a combination of state-of-the-art technologies.

Decoherence-free measurement of wavefunction collapse with interferometers in quantum superpositions

Garrelt Quandt-Wiese

A novel approach for measuring wavefunction collapse is proposed which, unlike interferometric measurements, is not affected by decoherence. A mirror of a Michelson interferometer is transferred into a quantum superposition, where the decay of the mirror superposition is measured by the fact that it affects the probability of detecting photons in the interferometer. The experiment can be realised with currently available technology for photon generation and detection and is suitable for testing collapse models, which is shown by calculating the expected outcomes for the gravity-based models of Diósi and Penrose.

Spontaneous Breaking of the Quantum Superposition

Vladan Panković, Milan Predojević

In this work spontaneous (non-dynamical) breaking (effective hiding) of the unitary quantum mechanical dynamical symmetry (superposition) is considered. It represents an especial but very interesting case of the general formalism of the spontaneous symmetry breaking (effective hiding). Conceptual analogies with spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry in Weinberg-Sallam's electro-weak interaction are pointed out. Also, consequences of the spontaneous superposition breaking in the measurement process are discussed. Measurement can be considered as a typical Landau's continuous phase transition with spontaneous superposition breaking (effective hiding) effectively corresponding to collapse. Here critical values of the order parameters are determined by Heisenberg's uncertainty relations.

Decoherence, Quantum Measurement Problem, and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

Yuanxin Li

In this paper, we propose a mechanism analogous to the spontaneous symmetry breaking to explain quantum measurement. It is actually a supplement to the decoherence theory. We introduce the effective potential between eigenstates and show that a wave function in a superposition of several eigenstates reduces to a single eigenstate due to the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking-like kinetic effect.

Quantum Measurement Problems, Decoherence, and Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

In this paper, we propose a mechanism analogous to the spontaneous symmetry breaking combined with the quantum decoherence theory to explain the collapse of the wave function after the quantum measurement. We show that a wave function in a superposition of several eigenstates reduces to a single eigenstate due to the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking-like kinetic effect.
