Representations of coherent states in non-orthogonal bases

Abstract

Starting with the canonical coherent states, we demonstrate that all the so-called nonlinear coherent states, used in the physical literature, as well as large classes of other generalized coherent states, can be obtained by changes of bases in the underlying Hilbert space. This observation leads to an interesting duality between pairs of generalized coherent states, bringing into play a Gelfand triple of (rigged) Hilbert spaces. Moreover, it is shown that in each dual pair of families of nonlinear coherent states, at least one family is related to a (generally) non-unitary projective representation of the Weyl–Heisenberg group, which can then be thought of as characterizing the dual pair.

Introduction to Coherent States

Didier Robert, Monique Combescure

In this Chapter we study the Weyl–Heisenberg group in the Schrödinger representation in arbitrary dimension n. One shows that it operates in the Hilbert space of quantum states (and on quantum operators) as a phase-space translation. Then applying it to a Schwartz class state of arbitrary profile we get a set of generalized coherent states. When we apply the Weyl–Heisenberg translation operator to the ground state of the n-dimensional Harmonic Oscillator, one gets the standard coherent states introduced by Schrödinger [233] (Naturwissenshaften 14:664–666, 1926) in the early days of quantum mechanics (1926). Later the coherent states have been extensively studied by Glauber [118, 119] (Phys. Rev. 131:2766–2788, 1963; Phys. Rev. 130:2529–2539, 1963) for the purpose of quantum optics and it seems that their name comes back to this work. The standard coherent states have been generalized by Perelomov [208] (Generalised Coherent States and Their Applications, 1986) to more general Lie groups than the Weyl–Heisenberg group. We also introduce the usual creation and annihilation operators in dimension n which are very convenient for the study of coherent states. We show that coherent states constitute a non-orthogonal over-complete system which yields a resolution of the identity operator in the Hilbert space and which allows a computation of the Hilbert–Schmidt norm and of the trace of respectively Hilbert–Schmidt class and trace-class operators. We study their time-evolution for the quantum Harmonic Oscillator hamiltonian and show that a time evolved coherent state located around phase-space point z is up to a phase a coherent state located around the phase-space point \(z_t\), where \(z_t\) is the phase-space point of the classical flow governed by the Harmonic Oscillator. This property was described by Schrödinger as the non-spreading of the time evolution of coherent states under the quantum Harmonic Oscillator dynamics. We also show how to go from the Schrödinger to the Fock–Bargmann representation using the standard coherent states.

On nonlinear coherent states properties for electron-phonon dynamics

Isiaka Aremua, Mahouton Norbert Hounkonnou, Ezinvi Baloïtcha

This work addresses a construction of a dual pair of nonlinear coherent states (NCS) in the context of changes of bases in the underlying Hilbert space for a model pertaining to an electron-phonon model in the condensed matter physics, obeying a f -deformed Heisenberg algebra. The existence and properties of reproducing kernel in the NCS Hilbert space are studied and discussed; the probability density and its dynamics in the basis of constructed coherent states are provided.A Glauber-Sudarshan P-representation of the density matrix and relevant issues related to the reproducing kernel properties are presented. Moreover, a NCS quantization of classical phase space observables is performed and illustrated in a concrete example of q-deformed coherent states. Finally, an exposition of quantum optical properties is given.

An observation of quadratic algebra, dual family of nonlinear coherent states and their non-classical properties, in the generalized isotonic oscillator

V. Chithiika Ruby, Murugaian Senthilvelan

In this paper, we construct nonlinear coherent states for the generalized isotonic oscillator and study their non-classical properties in detail. By transforming the deformed ladder operators suitably, which generate the quadratic algebra, we obtain Heisenberg algebra. From the algebra, we define two non-unitary and one unitary displacement type operators. While the action of one of the non-unitary type operators reproduces the original nonlinear coherent states, the other one fails to produce a new set of nonlinear coherent states (dual pair). We show that these dual states are not normalizable. For the nonlinear coherent states, we evaluate the parameter A3 and examine the non-classical nature of the states through quadratic and amplitude-squared squeezing effect. Further, we derive analytical formula for the P-function, Q-function, and the Wigner function for the nonlinear coherent states. All of them confirm the non-classicality of the nonlinear coherent states. In addition to the above, we obtain the harmonic oscillator type coherent states from the unitary displacement operator.

The Heisenberg–Weyl group in the coherent state basis and the Bargmann transform

Debabrata Basu, T. K. Kar

It is shown that the representation matrices of the quantum mechanical group in the coherent state basis can be used as bases for the expansion of arbitrary square integrable functions on the group. Although this basis is nonorthogonal the expansion can be inverted in a manner similar to an orthogonal basis. Next a coherent state ‘‘wave function’’ is defined in analogy with the Schrödinger wave function and the above matrix elements are used to determine the action of the group in the space of the coherent state wave functions. The function space in this realization is Bargmann’s Hilbert space of analytic functions. It is shown that the mixed basis matrix element between the coordinate and coherent state bases is essentially the integral kernel of Bargmann. The transpose of this matrix element yields the kernel for the inversion of the transform. In this construction the Bargmann transform appears as the unitary transformation connecting the Schrödinger and coherent state wave functions. This considerably simplifies Bargmann’s original arguments and yields the integral transform as well as its inversion formula in a simple way.
