Abstract

The mathematically exact solution of a one-dimensional (1D) quantum N-identical-boson system with zero-range pair interaction has been well known. We find that this solution is non-physical, since there exists a paradox of its energy expectation value, leading a basic contradiction to the mean-field theory of the system. A new integral equation that is equivalent to the corresponding Schrodinger one is established and its formally physical solution is derived. Energy correction from the average potential and harmonic waves of different momentums are demonstrated, and scattering amplitude of the physical solution and mean-field theory of the system are discussed.

Two identical one-dimensional anyons with zero-range interactions: Exchange statistics, scattering theory, and anyon-anyon mapping

Raúl Hidalgo-Sacoto, Thomas Busch, D. Blume

While elementary particles obey either bosonic or fermionic exchange statistics, generalized exchange statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions---applicable to quasiparticles---constitute an intriguing topic from both the fundamental and practical points of view. This work develops a scattering framework for two identical one-dimensional (1D) bosonic anyons and two identical 1D fermionic anyons with zero-range contact interactions. The two-body system with zero-range interactions, in both free space and under external confinement, is used to illustrate the recently proposed bosonic-anyon---fermionic-anyon mapping (R. Hidalgo-Sacoto et al., Phys. Rev. A 112, 063309 (2025)), which connects the eigenstates of bosonic anyons to those of fermionic anyons and vice versa. Performing explicit calculations for two-particle systems, the momentum distributions and the off-diagonal correlations of the single-particle density matrix for bosonic anyons and fermionic anyons are confirmed to be distinct. We also confirm the previously derived asymptotic coefficients of the momentum distribution tail at orders ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ and ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ for two harmonically confined anyons. Nonuniversal contributions at order ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ are discussed.

Exact solution for three particles interacting via zero-range potentials

J. H. Macek, S. Yu. Ovchinnikov, G. Gasaneo

Exact solutions for three identical bosons interacting via zero-range $s$-wave potentials are derived. The solutions are contour integrals over a product of hyperradial Bessel functions times angular functions weighted by a coefficient. The product function is a solution of the free-particle Schr\"odigner equation and the weight function is chosen to satisfy the zero-range boundary conditions. Scattering matrix elements for boson-dimer elastic scattering, breakup of a dimer into three particles and the time-reversed recombination process are derived. For vanishing total energy $E$, these quantities are given as closed-form functions of the two-body $s$-wave scattering length $a$ and a three-body renormalization constant ${R}_{0}$. The exact results obtained by this method are compared with those obtained using other methods. Differences in the functional dependence on ${R}_{0}$ of the order of 2% are noted. Comparison with the hidden-crossing theory finds similar agreement with the functional dependence upon $a$ and ${R}_{0}$.

Exactly Solvable Many-Boson Model

R. W. Richardson

A many-boson model is formulated and expressions for its exact eigenstates and energies are obtained for both an arbitrary finite and an infinite number of bosons. The Hamiltonian of the model contains interactions between bosons whose momenta have equal magnitudes but opposite directions. The matrix elements of this interaction are taken to be a constant over a range of momenta surrounding k = 0. The ground state of the 2N-particle system is shown to be a product of N pair-creation operators acting on the vacuum state. Each of these pair-creation operators depends upon one of N parameters which are called pair energies. The N pair energies are shown to satisfy a coupled system of nonlinear algebraic equations. The energy of the state is the sum of the pair energies and the occupation probabilities of the single-particle levels are given as simple functions of the pair energies. Similar results are derived for the excited states of the system and for the states of an odd number of particles. These results are valid for both a repulsive and an attractive interaction, since they only depend upon the form of the interaction. The equations are solved algebraically for two model systems. The first of these is one whose single-particle kinetic energy takes on only one value. The equations for this system are solved for an arbitrary interaction strength and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Laguerre polynomials. The second system is one in which the single-particle kinetic energy can take on two values. The equations for this system are solved in the strong repulsive-interaction limit and it is shown that the pair energies are proportional to the zeros of certain Jacobi polynomials. The excitation energies of this second system are shown to be proportional to 1/n and the occupations of the two single-particle levels in the ground state are shown to be proportional to n, where n is the total number of particles. For a repulsive interaction and an arbitrary single-particle spectrum, the algebraic equations for the pair energies are converted into an approximate integral equation for the density of roots which is accurate to order 1/n. This integral equation is solved for a strong interaction which, in the context of this model, means an interaction whose strength is greater than a constant times 1/V⅔ in the limit of a large volume. From this solution, the following results are obtained: (1) the lowest two single-particle levels have occupations of order n; (2) the excitation spectrum is that of a set of noninteracting quasiparticles; and (3) the quasiparticle spectrum has two zeros corresponding to the lowest two single-particle levels. Apart from the presence of two zeros, the quasiparticle spectrum does not differ significantly from that of the noninteracting particles.

Many-particle systems V. Zero-range interactions

Richard L. Hall

Close upper and lowei bounds are found on the binding energy of a system of N identical bosons interacting in one dimension by an attractive square-well pair potential. In the limit in which the potential has the shape of a δ function the bounds are found to be consistent with McGuire's exact solution. In three dimensions the limit of vanishingly small range, in which the two-particle binding energy is kept constant, gives infinite binding to the N -particle system, in agreement with Thomas's theorem Consideration of other limiting Proc.esses eliminates an apparent contradiction between Thomas and Svartholm.

Evolution of the Boson gas at zero temperature: Mean-field limit and second-order correction

Manoussos G. Grillakis, Matei Machedon, Dionisios Margetis

A large system of N N integer-spin atoms, called Bosons, manifests one of the most coherent macroscopic quantum states known to date, the “Bose-Einstein condensate”, at extremely low temperatures. As N → ∞ N\to \infty , this system is usually described by a mean-field limit: a single-particle wave function, the condensate wave function , that satisfies a nonlinear Schrödinger-type equation. In this expository paper, we review kinetic aspects of the mean-field Boson evolution. Furthermore, we discuss recent advances in the rigorous study of second-order corrections to this mean-field limit. These corrections originate from the quantum-kinetic mechanism of pair excitation , which lies at the core of pioneering works in theoretical physics including ideas of Bogoliubov, Lee, Huang, Yang and Wu. In the course of our exposition, we revisit the formalism of Fock space, which is indispensable for the analysis of pair excitation.
