Abstract

We employ a high quantum efficiency photon number counter to determine the photon number distribution of the output field from a parametric down-converter. The raw photocount data directly demonstrates that the source is nonclassical by 40 standard deviations, and correcting for the quantum efficiency yields a direct observation of oscillations in the photon number distribution.

Direct, Loss-Tolerant Characterization of Nonclassical Photon Statistics

Daryl Achilles, Christine Silberhorn, Ian A. Walmsley

We experimentally investigate a method of directly characterizing the photon-number distribution of nonclassical light beams that is tolerant to losses and makes use of only standard binary detectors. This is achieved in a single measurement by calibrating the detector using some small amount of prior information about the source. We demonstrate the technique on a freely propagating heralded two-photon-number state created by conditional detection of a two-mode squeezed state generated by parametric down-conversion.

Direct observation of the degree of correlations using photon-number-resolving detectors

Liat Dovrat, Michael Bakstein, D. Istrati +4 more

Optical parametric down-conversion is a common source for the generation of nonclassical correlated photonic states. Using a parametric down-conversion source and photon-number-resolving detectors, we measure the two-mode photon-number distribution of up to 10 photons for different degrees of correlation. The degree of correlation is controlled by collecting different spatial and spectral single modes for each polarization and varying the amount of spectral and spatial overlap between them. Clear evidence for photon-number correlations is presented despite detector imperfections such as low detection efficiency and other distorting effects. Two criteria, derived directly from the raw data, are shown to be good measures for the degree of correlation. Additionally, using a fitting technique, we find a connection between the measured photon-number distribution and the degree of correlation of the reconstructed original two-mode state. These observations are only possible as a result of the detection of high photon number events.

How colors influence numbers: Photon statistics of parametric down-conversion

Parametric down-conversion (PDC) is a technique of ubiquitous experimental significance in the production of nonclassical, photon-number-correlated twin beams. Standard theory of PDC as a two-mode squeezing process predicts and homodyne measurements observe a thermal photon number distribution per beam. Recent experiments have obtained conflicting distributions. In this article, we explain the observation by an a priori theoretical model solely based on directly accessible physical quantities. We compare our predictions with experimental data and find excellent agreement.

Photon statistics and spatial properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Martin Hamar, Jan Peřina, Ondřej Haderka

Measurement of photon-number statistics of fields composed of photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by strong ultrashort pulses is described. Finite detection quantum efficiencies, noises as well as possible loss of one or both photons from a pair are taken into account. Measured data provided by an intensified CCD camera are analyzed along the developed model. The joint signal-idler photon-number distribution is obtained using the expectation maximization algorithm. Covariance of the signal and idler photon-numbers exceeds 98%. Entanglement area of the correlated photon pairs is determined.
