Symplectic invariants, entropic measures and correlations of Gaussian states

Abstract

We present a derivation of the Von Neumann entropy and mutual information of arbitrary two-mode Gaussian states, based on the explicit determination of the symplectic eigenvalues of a generic covariance matrix. The key role of the symplectic invariants in such a determination is pointed out. We show that the Von Neumann entropy depends on two symplectic invariants, while the purity (or the linear entropy) is determined by only one invariant, so that the two quantities provide two different hierarchies of mixed Gaussian states. A comparison between mutual information and entanglement of formation for symmetric states is considered, taking note of the crucial role of the symplectic eigenvalues in qualifying and quantifying the correlations present in a generic state.

We determine the Von Neumann entropy and the mutual information of an arbitrary bipartite Gaussian state. A comparison between mutual information and entanglement of formation for symmetric states is considered, remarking the crucial role of the symplectic eigenvalues in qualifying and quantifying correlations.

Total versus quantum correlations in a two-mode Gaussian state

Abstract In Li and Luo (2007 Phys. Rev. Classical analogs of the covariance matrix, purity, linear entropy, and von Neumann entropy

Bogar Díaz, Diego González, Daniel Gutiérrez‐Ruiz +1 more

We obtain a classical analog of the quantum covariance matrix by performing its classical approximation for any continuous quantum state, and we illustrate this approach with the anharmonic oscillator. Using this classical covariance matrix, we propose classical analogs of the purity, linear quantum entropy, and von Neumann entropy for classical integrable systems, when the quantum counterpart of the system under consideration is in a Gaussian state. As is well known, this matrix completely characterizes the purity, linear quantum entropy, and von Neumann entropy for Gaussian states. These classical analogs can be interpreted as quantities that reveal how much information from the complete system remains in the considered subsystem. To illustrate our approach, we calculate these classical analogs for three coupled harmonic oscillators and two linearly coupled oscillators. We find that they exactly reproduce the results of their quantum counterparts. In this sense, it is remarkable that we can calculate these quantities from the classical viewpoint.

Typical Gaussian quantum information

Philipp Sohr, Valentin Link, Kimmo Luoma +1 more

Abstract We investigate different geometries and invariant measures on the space of mixed Gaussian quantum states. We show that when the global purity of the state is held fixed, these measures coincide and it is possible, within this constraint, to define a unique notion of volume on the space of mixed Gaussian states. We then use the so defined measure to study typical non-classical correlations of two mode mixed Gaussian quantum states, in particular entanglement and steerability. We show that under the purity constraint alone, typical values for symplectic invariants can be computed very elegantly, irrespectively of the non-compactness of the underlying state space. Then we consider finite volumes by constraining the purity and energy of the Gaussian state and compute typical values of quantum correlations numerically.

Invariant measures on multimode quantum Gaussian states

Cosmo Lupo, Stefano Mancini, Antonella De Pasquale +3 more

We derive the invariant measure on the manifold of multimode quantum Gaussian states, induced by the Haar measure on the group of Gaussian unitary transformations. To this end, by introducing a bipartition of the system in two disjoint subsystems, we use a parameterization highlighting the role of nonlocal degrees of freedom—the symplectic eigenvalues—which characterize quantum entanglement across the given bipartition. A finite measure is then obtained by imposing a physically motivated energy constraint. By averaging over the local degrees of freedom we finally derive the invariant distribution of the symplectic eigenvalues in some cases of particular interest for applications in quantum optics and quantum information.
