Abstract

We carry out a theoretical study of the collective spontaneous emission (superradiance) from an ultrathin film comprised of three-level atoms with V configuration of the operating transitions. As the thickness of the system is small compared to the emission wavelength inside the film, the local-field correction to the averaged Maxwell field is relevant. We show that the interplay between the low-frequency quantum coherence within the subspace of the upper doublet states and the local-field correction may drastically affect the branching ratio of the operating transitions. This effect may be used for controlling the emission process by varying the doublet splitting and the amount of low-frequency coherence.

Local field effects in superradiance and superradiance without inversion from a thin film of three-level atoms

A. A. Bogdanov, Igor Viktorovich Ryzhov, Evgeni D. Trifonov +2 more

We analyze the superradiant emission with and without inversion from a thin film comprised of three-level atoms with the A-scheme of operating transitions. Since the thickness of the system is assumed to be smaller than the emission wavelength, the local-field correction to the acting field becomes of great importance and affects the three-level superradiance to a large extent. Due to this correction, a competition between the operating transitions occurs, resulting under suitable conditions in the suppression of one of them.

We investigate the influence of the local field on the competition between the operating transitions in the superradiant emission from a thin film comprised of the three-level atoms with the initial coherence of lower doublet. Due tot this influence a coherent Raman transition between the sublevels of a doublet may occur.

Effect of nearby level on kinetics of superradiance of thin layer: the local-field regime

Igor Viktorovich Ryzhov, А. И. Зайцев

Under analysis is the influence of the local field upon the competition of transitions in the process of superradiance from incompletely excited thin layer of three level atoms ((Lambda) -diagram of the operating transitions). It is highlighted that while the upper sublevel of the lower doublet starts degenerating, there is a superradiant regime, where the combinative transition leads the development of the superradiance pulse, and the time of the pulse delay depends on the parameters of the local field and splitting of the lower doublet.

Near-field effect in quantum optics of surface: spontaneous emission in ultrathin dielectric film

Oleg N. Gadomsky, Konstantin V. Krutitsky

We have theoretically investigated the process of spontaneous emission of initially excited two-level atom inside and outside of ultra-thin dielectric film. Dielectric medium is considered as discrete-continuous system of interacting dipoles. For the solution of this boundary problem of quantum optics we use Heisenberg equations for atomic operators. Mode functions of ultra-thin film are calculated by direct solution of integro-differential field equation. Coordinate dependences of excited state life time are analyzed and it is shown that consideration of near-field effect may essentially change spectral properties of the atoms located at small distances from the surface.

Inversionless superradiance of a thin layer of three-level atoms: Coherent Raman transition between sublevels of the lower doublet

А. И. Зайцев, Igor Viktorovich Ryzhov

The effect of a local field on the transition competition in the process of superradiance of a thin layer of three-level atoms (Λ-configuration of working transitions) in the presence of an initial coherence of the lower doublet is investigated. It is shown that under the action of a local field, a coherent Raman transition between sublevels of the lower doublet can take place.

Inversionless superradiance of an ensemble of three-level atoms in a high-Q cavity

We analyze the possibility of superradiance in an ensemble of three-level atoms in the absence of population inversion. We show that in the case of a Λ configuration of the active transitions this effect can occur for an initially coherent superposition of the states of the lower doublet. We also study how splitting of the lower levels influences this effect and discuss ways of creating low-frequency coherence.
