Abstract

We find a set of different orthonormalized states of a nonstationary harmonic oscillator and use them to expand the solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with harmonic potential. The expansion series describes wave-packet trains of a Bose-Einstein condensate, which may be induced initially by the modulational instability. The center of any wave-packet train oscillates like a classical harmonic oscillator of frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$. The width and height of the wave packet and the distance between two wave packets change simultaneously like an array of breathers with frequency $2\ensuremath{\omega}$. We demonstrate analytically and numerically that for a set of suitable parameters the wave-packet trains can be more exactly fitted to the matter-wave soliton trains observed by Strecker et al. and reported in Nature (London) 417, 150 (2002).

Breathing Bright Solitons in a Bose—Einstein Condensate

崇桂书, 海文华, 谢琼涛

A Bose-Einstein condensate with time varying scattering length in time-dependent harmonic trap is analytically investigated and soliton-like solutions of the Gross-Pitaeviskii equation are obtained to describe single soliton, bisoliton and N-soliton properties of the matter wave. The influences of the geometrical property and modulate frequency of trapping potential on soliton behaviour are discussed. When the trap potential has a very sinall trap aspect ratio or oscillates with a high frequency, the matter wave preserves its shape nearly like a soliton train in propagation, while the breathing behaviour, which displays the periodic collapse and revival of the matter wave, is found for a relatively large aspect ratio or slow varying potential. Meanwhile mass centre of the matter wave translates and/or oscillates for different trap aspect ratio and trap frequencies.

Wave-packet trains of a time-dependent harmonic oscillator

Wenhua Hai, Shengxun Huang, Kelin Gao

By using a test-function method, we construct $n$ exact solutions of a quantum harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent "spring constant". Any $n$-th solution describes a wave-packet train consisting of $n+1$ packets. Its center oscillates like the classically harmonic oscillator with variable frequency, and width and highness of each packet change simultaneously. When the deformation is small, it behaves like a soliton train, and the large deformation is identified with collapse and revival of the wave-packet train.

Wave-packet dynamics for a coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Sukla Pal, Jayanta K. Bhattacharjee

Starting from coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) describing the dynamics of binary Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC), we have explored the dynamics of the width of initial wave-packets by following two different approaches. We have followed a recent coherent state based approach and have shown that in binary BEC the oscillation of the width of the wave packet can give rise to instability at a certain condition. Alternately we have proceeded by considering the trial ground state solutions for both the species and through the Ehrenfest theorem shown the existence of an instability which may lead to phase separation of the two species.

Wave packet dynamics for Gross–Pitaevskii equation in one dimension: Dependence on initial conditions

Sukla Pal, Jayanta K. Bhattacharjee

The propagation of an initially Gaussian wave packet of width [Formula: see text] in Gross–Pitaevskii equation is extensively studied both for attractive and repulsive interactions. It is predicted analytically and verified numerically that for a free particle with attractive interaction, the dynamics of the width is governed by an effective potential which is sensitive to initial conditions. If [Formula: see text] is equal to a corresponding critical width [Formula: see text], then the packet will propagate in time with very little change in shape. These are in essence like coherent states. Whereas, if [Formula: see text], depending on the nature of the effective potential for chosen [Formula: see text] and the interaction strength [Formula: see text], the width of the packet in course of time, either oscillates with bounded width or will spread like a free particle. For a simple harmonic oscillator (SHO) also, we find that for [Formula: see text] smaller than a critical value, there always exists a coupling strength for which the packet simply oscillates about the mean position without changing its shape, once again providing a resemblance to a coherent state. We also consider the Morse potential, which interpolates between the free particle and the oscillator. For large attractive interactions, the two limiting dynamics (free and simple harmonic) are indeed observed but in the intermediate form of the potential where the nonlinear terms dominate in the dynamics, an initial Gaussian wave packet does not retain its shape. For repulsive interaction, the Gaussian packet always changes shape no matter what the system parameters are.

INVESTIGATION OF FOUR-WAVE MIXING OF MATTER WAVES IN BOSE–EINSTEIN CONDENSATES

CHUNLIU SUN, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

We investigate the four-wave mixing of matter wave packets created from a Bose–Einstein condensate, realized experimentally by utilizing light pulses to create two high-momentum wave packets via Bragg diffraction from a stationary condensate. Based on the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, a set of nonlinearly coupled envelope equations including self- and cross-phase modulational effects are derived systematically using a method of multiple-scales. The exact and explicit analytical solutions are provided for the coupled envelope equations and the evolution of the wave packets after turning off trapping potential is discussed and compared with experiment.
