Abstract

We analyze the quantum-mechanical limits to the plasmon-assisted entanglement transfer observed by Altewischer, van Exter, and Woerdman [Nature 418, 304 (2002)]. The maximal violation S of Bell's inequality at the photodetectors behind two linear media (such as the perforated metal films in the experiment) can be described by two ratio's ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{1},$ ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{2}$ of polarization-dependent transmission probabilities. A fully entangled incident state is transferred without degradation for ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{1}={\ensuremath{\tau}}_{2},$ but a relatively large mismatch of ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{2}$ can be tolerated with a small reduction of S. We predict that fully entangled Bell pairs can be distilled out of partially entangled radiation if ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{1}$ and ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{2}$ satisfy a pair of inequalities.

Theory of Plasmon-Assisted Transmission of Entangled Photons

Esteban Moreno, Francisco José García-Vidal, Daniel Erni +2 more

The recent surface plasmon entanglement experiment [Nature (London) 418, 304 (2002)]] is theoretically analyzed. The entanglement preservation upon transmission in the nonfocused case is found to provide information about the interaction of the biphoton and the metallic film. The entanglement degradation in the focused case is explained in the framework of a fully multimode model. This phenomenon is a consequence of the polarization-selective filtering behavior of the metallic nanostructured film. It is shown that the "which-way" labels that degrade entanglement are not located in the degrees of freedom of the metallic film but rather in the spatial degrees of freedom of the photon field.

Distillability, Bell Inequalities, and Multiparticle Bound Entanglement

Antonio Acín

We study the relation between violation of Bell inequalities and distillability properties of quantum states. Recently, Dür [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 230402 (2001)] has shown that there are some multiparticle bound entangled states which are nonseparable and nondistillable, that violate a Bell inequality. We prove that for all the states violating this inequality there exists at least one splitting of the parties into two groups such that some pure-state entanglement can be distilled, obtaining a connection between Bell inequalities and bipartite distillable entanglement.

Observation of the Preservation of the Two-Photon Coherence in Plasmon-assisted Transmission

Guo‐Ping Guo, Xi‐Feng Ren, Yun‐Feng Huang +3 more

We experimentally study two-photon coherence in plasmon-assisted transmission with a two-photon Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometer. Two collinear photons of identical or orthogonal polarization are simultaneously incident on one optically thick metal film, perforated with a periodic array of subwavelength holes. The de Broglie wavelength of plasmon-assisted transmitted photons is measured, which shows that two photons are re-eradiated by the plasmons and the quantum coherence of biphoton is preserved in the conversion process of transforming biphoton to plasmons and then back to biphoton.

Tripartite Entanglement and Lorentz Transformation

Firouz Amiri, Shahpoor Moradi

Entanglement of tripartite spin states under Lorentz transformations is studied in the context of Bell’s inequality and positive partial transpose criterion. First the relativistic analogue of Bell’s inequality is discussed for three qubit states by explicit calculation of the Wigner rotation. We use the relativistic invariant spin operator which is related to the Pauli-Lubanski pseudo vector. For observers at rest the Bell’s inequality is speed-independent and maximally violated. For moving observers it’s shown that Bell’s inequality is violated and the amount of violation depends on the boost speed. We show that in ultrarelativistic limit Bell’s inequality is still maximally violated. We also obtained the critical value for satisfying Bell’s inequality. The critical value of boost speed for violation of inequality for particles moving in the center of mass frame is greater than that for particles moving with the same momentum. Second we investigate the entanglement distillability of tripartite mixed spin states under Lorentz transformations in the context of Werner states. We show that there are states that will change from distillable (entangled) into separable for a certain value of rapidity.
