Generating Fock states and two-Fock states superposition from circular states, in a trapped ion

Abstract

We propose three schemes to engineer 2^M and M+1 circular states for the motion of the center of mass of a trapped ion, $M$ being the number of laser pulses. Since the ion is subjected to several laser pulses, we analyze the necessary duration of each one for generating the circular states, and from these, the Fock states and superposition of two-Fock states. We also calculate the probability for obtaining the required states.

Generation of circular states and Fock states in a trapped ion

Wagner Duarte José, Salomon Sylvain Mizrahi

We propose three schemes to engineer a circular state (superposition of the harmonic oscillator coherent states on a circle in phase space) for the centre-of-mass motion of a trapped ion. We analyse the necessary duration of each laser pulse for constructing such states, and calculate the probability of obtaining the subtle superposition. We also show that it is possible to engineer Fock number states as a result of the interference effects in phase space of the coherent states superposition.

We propose a scheme to drive the centre-of-mass vibrational motion of two trapped ions to an arbitrary finite superposition of Fock states from the vacuum state. In order to generate a superposition of N Fock states we need N operations. The scheme does not require differential laser addressing of individual ions.

Generation of Squeezed Number States of theMotion of a Trapped Ion

Zheng Shi-Biao

We propose a scheme for the generation of squeezed number states of the center-of-mass motion of a trapped ion. In the scheme the ion is excited by two laser fields tuned to the first lower and higher vibrational sidebands, and then by one laser tuned to the ion transition in an alternative way. Finally, the system is prepared in the state given by the product of the motional squeezed number state with the ground electronic state.

Generation of Superpositions of Two-Mode Coherent States for the Motion of Two Trapped Ions

Zheng Zheng, Shi-Biao

We propose a method for the generation of superpositions of two-mode coherent states for the center-of-mass and relative vibrational modes of two trapped ions. In the scheme the ions are driven by a single travelling-wave laser field tuned to the carrier. Then a measurement of the internal states collapses the vibrational modes to the entangled coherent state.

We propose a scheme to generate a superposition with arbitrary coefficients on a line in phase space for the center-of-mass vibrational mode of N ions by means of isolating all other spectator vibrational modes from the center-of-mass mode. It can be viewed as the generation of previous methods for preparing motional states of one ion. For large number of ions, we need only one cyclic operatin to generate such a superposition of many coherent states.
