Nonclassical statistics of intracavity coupled χ(2) waveguides: The quantum optical dimer

Abstract

A model is proposed where two ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{(2)}$ nonlinear waveguides are contained in a cavity suited for second-harmonic generation. The evanescent wave coupling between the waveguides is considered as weak, and the interplay between this coupling and the nonlinear interaction within the waveguides gives rise to quantum violations of the standard quantum limit. Pronounced twin-beam behavior is observed as almost complete noise suppression in the difference as well as the sum of the waveguide intensities close to bistable transitions, self-pulsing instabilities as well as the transition from symmetric to asymmetric states. The correlations imply strong correlations and anticorrelations induced by the coupling. The violations of the standard quantum limit are particularly strong when two instabilities are competing. The results are based on the full quantum Langevin equations derived from the boson operator Hamiltonian and including cavity damping effects. The intensity correlations of the output fields are calculated semianalytically using a linearized version of the Langevin equations derived through the positive-P representation. Confirmation of the analytical results are obtained by numerical simulations of the nonlinear Langevin equations derived using the truncated Wigner representation.

Nonlinear dynamics and quantum noise for competing χ^(2) nonlinearities

Monika A. M. Marte

The mutual influence of second-harmonic generation and nondegenerate downconversion inside the same cavity is studied. The threshold behavior and the stability of a semiclassical solution with all four modes oscillating resonantly is investigated. It is shown that under certain conditions the self-pulsing instability that occurs in second-harmonic generation is absent in the combined system. The squeezing spectra for the quadrature-phase amplitudes in the second harmonic and the fundamental, as well as the photon statistics in the downconverted modes, are derived analytically. As one of the various nonclassical features of this system, the second harmonic is found to exhibit excellent noise suppression at very large frequencies, with the frequency component of best squeezing being tunable by the pump parameter. The intricate interaction of the two nonlinear processes can give rise to twin beams of correlated photons, with sub-Poissonian statistics in each beam. These results are contrasted with the results for each nonlinear process by itself.

Quantum properties of transverse pattern formation in second-harmonic generation

Morten Bache, Pierre Scotto, Roberta Zambrini +2 more

We investigate the spatial quantum noise properties of the one-dimensional transverse pattern formation instability in intracavity second-harmonic generation. The Q representation of a quasi-probability distribution is implemented in terms of nonlinear stochastic Langevin equations. We study these equations through extensive numerical simulations and analytically in the linearized limit. Our study, made below and above the threshold of pattern formation, is guided by a microscopic scheme of photon interaction underlying pattern formation in second-harmonic generation. Close to the threshold for pattern formation, beams with opposite direction of the off-axis critical wave numbers are shown to be highly correlated. This is observed for the fundamental field, for the second-harmonic field, and also for the cross-correlation between the two fields. Nonlinear correlations involving the homogeneous transverse wave number, which are not identified in a linearized analysis, are also described. The intensity differences between opposite points of the far fields are shown to exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics, revealing the quantum nature of the correlations. We observe twin beam correlations in both the fundamental and second-harmonic fields, and also nonclassical correlations between them.

Quantum features of nonlinear coupler with competing nonlinearity

Rafael Julius, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, P. K. Choudhury +2 more

Abstract In this work, we examine the quantum features of a multi-waveguide nonlinear coupler exploiting the second-and third-order nonlinearities. The considered system contains four identical channels, each with a single fundamental transverse mode. The essence of this type of nonlinear coupler is to examine the effect of two or more competing nonlinearities on the generated nonclassical features in this class of devices. Here, we consider the case of second harmonic generation, wherein the fundamental harmonic (FH) fields are up-converted in pairs to double-frequency second harmonic (SH) fields, which are then evanescently coupled with the fields from other Kerr nonlinear waveguides. Using the positive P representation of the phase space, the time-evolution of the density matrix could be mapped to the corresponding Fokker–Planck equation of a classical quasiprobability distribution. Using Langevin stochastic equation, an exact representation of the system in phase space led to the demonstration of sub-Poissonian property, squeezing, and entanglement. With more effective squeezing achieved in all channel waveguides, the present system with χ(2)–χ(3) interaction can be a more efficient alternative to other versions of nonlinear couplers such as the quantum optical dimer (QOD) and Kerr nonlinear coupler (KNC). Furthermore, such a structure offers more flexibility in coupled-mode interactions in the form of correlation between the modes in different waveguides. This provides a better mechanism for the generation of enhanced nonclassical effects.

Nonclassical properties of nonlinear light beam interactions

Jan Peřina

We investigate both codirectional and contradirectional nonlinear couplers composed of two nonlinear waveguides operating by second harmonic generation. We take into account possible mismatches inside the waveguides and between them. Quantum statistical characteristics, such as photon number distribution, its factorial moments, quadrature and integrated intensity vari- ances and quadrature uncertainty product can demonstrate effects of transmission of light between waveguides. Incident beams can be assumed to be coherent, squeezed and mixed with external noise. Second harmonic modes are assumed to be pumped with strong coherent beams. Nonclassical behavior of beams generated by the nonlinear waveguides can be transferred between them and controlled by linear and nonlinear mismatches. In the contradirectional regime of propagation asymptotic nonclassical states can be generated.

Linear and nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in a nonlinear optical coupler

Kishore Thapliyal, Anirban Pathak, Jan Peřina

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are studied in a symmetric nonlinear optical coupler, which is composed of two nonlinear (${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\left(2\right)}$) waveguides that are interacting with each other via the evanescent waves. Both waveguides operate under second harmonic generation. However, to study quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects one of them is considered as the system and the other one is considered as the probe. Considering all the fields involved as weak, a completely quantum mechanical description is provided, and the analytic solutions of Heisenberg's equations of motion for all the field modes are obtained using a perturbative technique. Photon number statistics of the second harmonic mode of the system is shown to depend on the presence of the probe, and this dependence is considered as quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects. Further, it is established that as a special case of the momentum operator for ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\left(2\right)}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\left(2\right)}$ symmetric coupler we can obtain momentum operator of ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\left(2\right)}\ensuremath{-}{\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\left(1\right)}$ asymmetric coupler with linear (${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{\left(1\right)}$) waveguide as the probe, and, in such a particular case, the expressions obtained for Zeno and anti-Zeno effects with nonlinear probe (which we referred to as nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects) may be reduced to the corresponding expressions with linear probe (which we referred to as the linear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects). Linear and nonlinear quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are rigorously investigated, and it is established that, in the stimulated case, we may switch between quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects just by controlling the phase of the second harmonic mode of the system or probe.
