Abstract

We calculate the Berry phase of a spin-1/2 particle in a magnetic field considering the quantum nature of the field. The phase reduces to the standard Berry phase in the semiclassical limit and the eigenstate of the particle acquires a phase in the vacuum. We also show how to generate a vacuum induced Berry phase considering two quantized modes of the field which has an interesting physical interpretation.

Berry phases for interacting spins in composite environments

Da-Bao Yang, Fulin Zhang, Jing-Ling Chen

Due to the potential application in quantum information process, geometric phase of interacting system arouse many interests. Some physicists concentrate on the system in pure classical envi- ronment, while others study the system in pure quantized environment. So a natural question is asked: how about an interacting system in composite environments made up of both classical and quantized field. In this letter, we analyze a quantum system composed of two interacting spins, of which one is in classical magnetic field and the other is in quantized field. First, classical magnetic field driven Berry phases for the whole system and subsystem are studied. The effect of couplings between particles and photon on these phases are analyzed. In comparison with the dynamical quantized field, We find that even a static quantized field in its vacuum state can also have an effect on Berry phase. Second, quantized field driven Berry phases for the whole system and sub- system are formulated, including both one and two mode of this field. The vacuum induced effects are elaborated, moreover compared with the constant vacuum induced phases in former papers, the counterpart in this letter varies according to classical magnetic field, couplings and other pa- rameters. For the two mode quantized field, the rigorous relationship between the concurrence and Berry phase for subsystem are built up.

Vacuum-induced Berry phase beyond the rotating-wave approximation

Tao Liu, Mang Feng, Kelin Wang

With reference to the vacuum-induced Berry phase (VIBP) obtained in the interaction of a spin-1/2 particle with quantized irradiation field under rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we present a completely different treatment for the VIBP by a fully quantum-mechanical treatment beyond the RWA, which gives different definition of the VIBP and indicates the validity of RWA to be relevant not only to the energy conservation and comparison of characteristic parameters, but also to more subtle physics, such as the geometric property of the state evolution. Our result is of conceptual importance and also of significant relevance to quantum-information processing.

Berry’s phase in cavity QED: Proposal for observing an effect of field quantization

Angelo C. M. Carollo, Marcelo França Santos, Vlatko Vedral

We propose a feasible experiment to investigate quantum effects in geometric phases, arising when a classical source drives not a single quantum system, but two interacting ones. In particular, we show how to observe a signature of the quantization of the electromagnetic field through a vacuum effect in Berry's phase. To do so, we describe the interaction of an atom and a quantized cavity mode altogether driven by an external quasiclassical field. We also analyze the semiclassical limit recovering the usual Berry's phase results.

Genuine vacuum-induced geometric phases

Minghao Wang, L. F. Wei, J.-Q. Liang

Since a pioneer work on vacuum-induced Berry phase (VIBP) was done by Fuentes-Guridi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89 (2002) 220404], much attention has been paid to the geometric phase effects of vacuum field. However, all the so-called VIBPs investigated previously are not purely vacuum-induced (i.e. the nonvacuum components of the field are also involved). In this paper, we discuss how to deliver geometric phases from the evolution of a genuine vacuum field in a standard cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. First, we design a cyclic evolution of an atom–field system with the atom being initially prepared at the excited state and the field at the genuine vacuum. Then, we calculate the geometric phases acquired during such a cyclic evolution. It is found that such geometric phases are really induced by an evolution of the genuine vacuum field. Specifically, our generic proposal is demonstrated with both the one- and two-mode Jaynes–Cummings model interactions (JCM).

Berry's phase in the Josephson phase qubit

Tyler, Anthony, Roberto Ramos

Berry's phase often appears in quantum two-level systems with a degeneracy. An example of such a system is a spin-1/2 particle in a magnetic field. As the magnetic field is slowly evolved through a closed path, the particle has been shown to acquire an additional phase called Berry's phase, in addition to the usual dynamical phase. This phase has been found in two-level quantum systems intrinsic to many superconducting qubits and has particularly been calculated for the charge, flux and Josephson phase qubit. Here, we present an alternative derivation of the Berry's phase in a current-biased Josephson junction qubit. We also calculate the complete Berry's phase evaluated over a closed loop in a frequency parameter space and compare this with the geometric phase. From this comparison, we examine the possibility of using a single phase qubit for topological quantum computing.

Non-adiabatic Non-cyclic Generalization of the Berry Phase for a Spin-1/2 Particle in a Rotating Magnetic Field

Siamak Sadat Gousheh, Azadeh Mohammadi, Leila Shahkarami

In this paper we define a non-dynamical phase for a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field in the non-adiabatic non-cyclic case, and this phase can be considered as a generalized Berry phase. We show that this phase reduces to the geometric Berry phase, in the adiabatic limit, up to a factor independent of the parameters of the system. We could add an arbitrary phase to the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian due to the gauge freedom. Then, we fix this arbitrary phase by comparing our Berry phase in the adiabatic limit with the Berry's result for the same system. Also, in the extreme non-adiabatic limit our Berry phase vanishes, modulo $2π$, as expected. Although, our Berry phase is in general complex, it becomes real in the expected cases: the adiabatic limit, the extreme non-adiabatic limit, and the points at which the state of the system returns to its initial form, up to a phase factor. Therefore, this phase can be considered as a generalization of the Berry phase. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the value of the generalized Berry phase, the period of the states and the period of the Hamiltonian.
