Conditional entropies and their relation to entanglement criteria

Abstract

We discuss conditional Rényi and Tsallis entropies for bipartite quantum systems of finite dimension. We investigate the relation between the positivity of conditional entropies and entanglement properties. It is in particular shown that any state having a negative conditional entropy with respect to any value of the entropic parameter is distillable since it violates the reduction criterion. Moreover, we show that the entanglement of Werner states in odd dimensions can neither be detected by entropic criteria nor by any other spectral criterion.

Can spectral and local information decide separability?

K. G. H. Vollbrecht, Michael M. Wolf

We discuss the discriminating power of separability criteria, which are based on the spectrum of a quantum state and its reductions. Common examples are entropic inequalities utilizing conditional Tsallis or Renyi entropies. We prove that these inequalities are implied by the reduction criterion for any positive value of the entropic parameters. We show however, that arbitrary sets of criteria based on spectral and local information can never be sufficient by establishing a separable, isospectral and locally undistinguishable counterpart for any Werner state in odd dimensions. For the case of two qubit systems we show that a simple controlled phase gate operation can produce an isospectral, entangled state out of a separable one, which has the same reductions.

Generalized entropic criterion for separability

R. Rossignoli, N. Canosa

We discuss the entropic criterion for separability of compound quantum systems for general nonadditive entropic forms based on arbitrary concave functions f. For any separable state, the generalized entropy of the whole system is shown to be not smaller than that of the subsystems, for any choice of f, providing thus a necessary criterion for separability. Nevertheless, the criterion is not sufficient and examples of entangled states with the same property are provided. This entails, in particular, that the conjecture about the positivity of the conditional Tsallis entropy for all q, a more stringent requirement than the positivity of the conditional von Neumann entropy, is actually a necessary but not sufficient condition for separability in general. The direct relation between the entropic criterion and the largest eigenvalues of the full and reduced density operators of the system is also discussed.

From the quantum relative Tsallis entropy to its conditional form: Separability criterion beyond local and global spectra

A. K. Rajagopal, Sudha, Anantha S. Nayak +1 more

The quantum relative R\'enyi entropy of two noncommuting density matrices was recently defined from which its conditional entropy is deduced. This framework is here extended to the corresponding Tsallis relative entropy and to its conditional form. This expression of Tsallis conditional entropy is shown to witness entanglement beyond the method based on global and local spectra of composite quantum states. When the reduced density matrix happens to be a maximally mixed state, this conditional entropy coincides with the expression in terms of Tsallis entropies derived earlier by Abe and Rajagopal [Physica A 289, 157 (2001)]. The separability range in a noisy one-parameter family of $W$ and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states with three and four qubits is explored here and it is shown that the results inferred from negative Tsallis conditional entropy matches that obtained through Peres's partial transpose criterion for one-parameter family of $W$ states, in one of its partitions. The criterion is shown to be nonspectral through its usefulness in identifying entanglement in isospectral density matrices.

Entropic uncertainty relations and entanglement

Otfried Gühne, Maciej Lewenstein

We discuss the relationship between entropic uncertainty relations and entanglement. We present two methods for deriving separability criteria in terms of entropic uncertainty relations. In particular, we show how any entropic uncertainty relation on one part of the system results in a separability condition on the composite system. We investigate the resulting criteria using the Tsallis entropy for two and three qubits.

Quantum Entropy and Correlations in Quantum Information

Reinhold A. Bertlmann, Nicolai Friis

Abstract Chapter 20 provides a discussion of entropies and entropic quantities in quantum information theory, briefly considering the generalizations of the Rényi entropy to the quantum regime, but mainly focusing on the von Neumann entropy and its properties such as concavity, the Araki-Lieb inequality, and subadditivity. We introduce the quantum relative entropy, quantum joint entropy, quantum conditional entropy, and quantum mutual information, and prove key properties and results for these quantities, including Klein’s inequality, joint convexity, additivity, and monotonicity under completely positive and trace-preserving maps of the relative entropy, as well as weak monotonicity and strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy. We then analyse the relation of (negative) conditional entropy and entanglement. In this context we discuss the conditional amplitude operator and the mutual amplitude operator, as well as conditional Rényi entropies and their role for entanglement detection.

Quantum conditional entropies and steerability of states with maximally mixed marginals

Komal Kumar, Nirman Ganguly

Quantum steering is an asymmetric correlation which occupies a place between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. In the paradigmatic scenario involving the protagonists Alice and Bob, the entangled state shared between them is said to be steerable from Alice to Bob if the steering assemblage on Bob's side does not admit a local hidden state (LHS) description. Quantum conditional entropies, on the other hand, provide for another characterization of quantum correlations. Contrary to our common intuition, conditional entropies for some entangled states can be negative, marking a significant departure from the classical realm. Quantum steering and quantum nonlocality, in general, share an intricate relation with quantum conditional entropies. In the present contribution, we investigate this relationship. For a significant class, namely the two-qubit Weyl states, we show that negativity of conditional R\'enyi 2-entropy and conditional Tsallis 2-entropy is a necessary and sufficient condition for the violation of a suitably chosen three settings steering inequality. With respect to the same inequality we find an upper bound for the conditional R\'enyi 2-entropy, such that the general two-qubit state is steerable. Moving from a particular steering inequality to local hidden-state descriptions, we show that some two-qubit Weyl states which admit a LHS model possess nonnegative conditional R\'enyi 2-entropy. However, the same does not hold true for some non-Weyl states. Our study further investigates the relation between nonnegativity of conditional entropy and LHS models in two-qudits for the isotropic and Werner states. There we find that, whenever these states admit a LHS model, they possess a nonnegative conditional R\'enyi 2-entropy. We then observe that the same holds true for a noisy variant of the two-qudit Werner state.
