On matrix elements of phase-angular momentum commutator in Hilbert space of arbitrary dimensions

Abstract

We discuss correspondence between the predictions of quantum theories for rotation angle formulated in infinite and finite dimensional Hilbert spaces, taking as example, the calculation of matrix elements of phase-angular momentum commutator. A new derivation of the matrix elements is presented in infinite space, making use of a unitary transformation that maps from the state space of periodic functions to non-periodic functions, over which the spectrum of angular momentum operator is in general, fractional. The approach can be applied to finite dimensional Hilbert space also, for which identical matrix elements are obtained.

Fractional angular momentum in non-commutative spaces

Jian-zu Zhang A B

In noncommutative spaces to maintain Bose–Einstein statistics for identical particles at the non-perturbation level described by deformed annihilation-creation operators when the state vector space of identical bosons is constructed by generalizing one-particle quantum mechanics it is explored that the consistent ansatz of commutation relations of phase space variables should simultaneously include space–space non-commutativity and momentum–momentum non-commutativity, and a new type of boson commutation relations at the deformed level is obtained. Consistent perturbation expansions of deformed annihilation-creation operators are obtained. The influence of the new boson commutation relations on dynamics is discussed. The non-perturbation and perturbation property of the orbital angular momentum of two-dimensional system are investigated. Its spectrum possesses fractional eigen values and fractional intervals.

Quantum formulation of angle and orbital angular momentum

Jörg B. Götte, Stephen Mark Barnett

The quantum mechanical description of the azimuthal rotation angle and the orbital angular momentum around the polar axis differs greatly from the description of position and momentum. This has led to a controversy over the existence of a self-adjoint angle operator in the literature. It is possible to circumvent the problems of defining a self-adjoint operator for a periodic variable by using trigonometric functions of operators as a basis for the quantum mechanical description. This approach, however, does not allow us to study the properties of the angle operator itself. By using a state space of an arbitrarily large yet finite number of dimensions, it is possible to introduce angle and orbital angular momentum as a conjugate pair of variables both represented by Hermitian matrices. After physical and measurable quantities have been calculated in this state space the number of dimensions is allowed to tend to infinity in a limiting procedure. The first part of this chapter reviews the difficulties associated with the quantum mechanical formulation of angle and orbital angular momentum and presents a way to overcome these problems using a finite-dimensional state space. In the second part this formulation is generalised to include the phenomenon of non-integer orbital angular momentum. This part is based on a chapter of the PhD thesis of Götte [1], where further details may be found. Introduction The correct description of a periodic variable such as a rotation angle or the optical phase has been a long standing problem in quantum mechanics. At the root of the problem is the question of whether the variable itself is restricted in a 2 π radian range or whether it evolves continuously without bound.

Quantum theory of rotation angles

Stephen Mark Barnett, David Thomas Pegg

The formulation of the quantum description of the rotation angle of the plane rotator has been beset by many of the long-standing problems associated with harmonic-oscillator phases. We apply methods recently developed for oscillator phases to the problem of describing a rotation angle by a Hermitian operator. These methods involve use of a finite, but arbitrarily large, state space of dimension 2l+1 that is used to calculate physically measurable quantum properties, such as expectation values, as a function l. Physical results are then recovered in the limit as l tends to infinity. This approach removes the indeterminacies caused by working directly with an infinite-dimensional state space. Our results show that the classical rotation angle observable does have a corresponding Hermitian operator with well-determined and reasonable properties. The existence of this operator provides deeper insight into the quantum-mechanical nature of rotating systems.

Semiclassical matrix-mechanics. II. Angular momentum operators

Richard M. More

Semiclassical angular momentum matrices are calculated using a new contour-integral formula for matrix-elements. WKB spherical harmonic functions are found to be exaclty orthonormal with the contour-integral inner-product. Matrix-elements obtained from these wave-functions are accurate to about 2 % and the matrices obey the commutation relations expected of quantum angular momentum operators. The semiclassical wave-functions are related to a superposition of allowed classical orbits and this illustrates the connection to the Feynman pathsummation formulation of quantum mechanics for electrons in a spherically symmetric potential.

Quantization in Polar Coordinates and the Phase Operator

Daniel A. Dubin, Mark A. Hennings, Thomas B. Smith

We review some of the difficulties previously encountered in defining the phase operator for finite quantum systems. We then propose the Wigner–Weyl quantization of the angle function φ on phase space as the phase operator, and derive a closed expression for its matrix elements with respect to the Hermite functions. We also determine the quantization of e^{iφ} , which turns out to be a weighted shift operator, its spectrum and that of its adjoint. This is done in the framework of quantization of a certain symbol class of phase space distributions, specialized to those which depend on one variable only. After recalling some results for the position and momentum variables, we apply the scheme to functions of radius or angle. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for operators obtained by quantizing functions of the angle to be elements of \mathscr L^+ [\mathscr S(\mathbf R)] and \mathscr L^+ [\mathscr S (\mathbf R), L^2(\mathbf R)] , and a sufficient condition for boundedness. We then consider the associated questions of commutation relations and uncertainties for operators in \mathscr L^+ [\mathscr S(\mathbf R), L^2(\mathbf R)] , which we define as bilinear forms. As must be the case, the commutator between our phase operator and the number operator exhibits noncanonical terms. Not surprisingly, the Poisson bracket of their phase space symbols also exhibits a noncanonical term.
