Propagators of the Jaynes-Cummings model in open systems

Abstract

We present a propagator formalism to investigate the scattering of photons by a cavity QED system that consists of a single two-level atom dressed by a leaky optical cavity field. We establish a diagrammatic method to construct the propagator analytically. This allows us to determine the quantum state of the scattered photons for an arbitrary incident photon packet. As an application, we explicitly solve the problem of a single-photon packet scattered by an initially excited atom.

Jaynes-Cummings model in leaky cavities: An exact pure-state approach

C. K. Law, T. W. Chen, P. T. Leung

We present an exact analytic solution for the Jaynes-Cummings model in a leaky optical cavity without using the Markov master equation. In our approach we solve directly the whole quantum state associated with the atom and the continuous field modes---modes-of-universe. Our solution exhibits a hierarchy structure and it is applicable to cases with arbitrary number of photons. The solution can be used to study decoherence effects and the quantum state of the transmitted field.

Few-photon Fock-state wave packet interacting with a cavity-atom system in a waveguide: Exact quantum state dynamics

E. V. Stolyarov

In the paper, we employ a wave-function approach to investigate the evolution of a two-photon wave packet propagating in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) system. We derive and solve, both analytically and numerically, a set of equations of motion governing the quantum state of the system. That allows us to provide real-time analysis of the evolution of the wave packet two-photon joint spectrum (2PJS) and the excitation dynamics of the JC system in the course of its interaction with the two-photon pulse. We demonstrate that the 2PJS and the spectrum of the wave packet scattered from the JC system experience transformation for nonzero atom-cavity couplings. Moreover, using Schmidt decomposition, we show that the scattered photons feature frequency entanglement contrary to the incident ones which are not entangled.

Few-Photon Single-Atom Cavity QED With Input-Output Formalism in Fock Space

Eden Rephaeli, Shanhui Fan

The Jaynes–Cummings (JC) system, which describes the interaction between a cavity and a two-level atom, is one of the most important systems in quantum optics. We obtain analytic solutions for the one- and two-photon transport in a waveguide side-coupled to the JC system using input–output formalism in Fock space. With these results, we discuss the conditions under which the JC system functions as a photon switch for waveguide photons in both the strong and weak coupling regimes.

Propagation of single-excitation quantum states through Jaynes–Cummings–Hubbard arrays

R. Chakrabarti, G Sreekumari

We study the dynamics of a one-dimensional array of the Jaynes–Cummings–Hubbard system of arbitrary number of coupled cavities, each containing a two-level atom that interacts with a field mode. In particular, we consider the propagation of a single-excitation quantum state for two different couplings between the localized photonic modes of the adjacent cavities, namely a translation invariant uniform coupling on a closed chain of cavities, and also a nonuniform parabolically varying intercavity coupling on a linear chain where the interaction Hamiltonian is associated with the Jacobi matrix of the relevant Krawtchouk polynomial. Using a description via the delocalized atomic and field modes, we observe that for a large detuning of these two degrees of freedom, atomic excitations propagate without populating the field modes, and vice versa. For the near-resonance scenario between these modes, the atomic excitations, say, while propagating mix with the photonic states. In the context of the parabolic coupling between photons of adjacent cavities, the time-dependent correlation function describing the propagation of the quantum state between two arbitrary sites may be expressed in closed form for dominant values of the detuning parameter, when an exact transmission of the quantum state at pre-specified times is realized.

Few-photon transport in many-body photonic systems: A scattering approach

Changhyoup Lee, Changsuk Noh, Nikolaos A. Schetakis +1 more

We study the quantum transport of multiphoton Fock states in one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard lattices implemented in QED cavity arrays (QCAs). We propose an optical scheme to probe the underlying many-body states of the system by analyzing the properties of the transmitted light using scattering theory. To this end, we employ the Lippmann-Schwinger formalism within which an analytical form of the scattering matrix can be found. The latter is evaluated explicitly for the two-particle, two-site case which we use to study the resonance properties of two-photon scattering, as well as the scattering probabilities and the second-order intensity correlations of the transmitted light. The results indicate that the underlying structure of the many-body states of the model in question can be directly inferred from the physical properties of the transported photons in its QCA realization. We find that a fully resonant two-photon scattering scenario allows a faithful characterization of the underlying many-body states, unlike in the coherent driving scenario usually employed in quantum master-equation treatments. The effects of losses in the cavities, as well as the incoming photons' pulse shapes and initial correlations, are studied and analyzed. Our method is general and can be applied to probe the structure of any many-body bosonic model amenable to a QCA implementation, including the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model, the extended Bose-Hubbard model, as well as a whole range of spin models.
