Rabi oscillations and macroscopic quantum superposition states

Abstract

A two-level atom interacting with a single radiation mode is considered, without the rotating-wave approximation, in the strong-coupling regime. It is shown that, in agreement with the recent results on Rabi oscillations in a Josephson junction [Y. Nakamura, Yu. A. Pashkin, and J. S. Tsai, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 246601 (2001)], the Rabi frequency is indeed proportional to first kind integer order Bessel functions in the limit of a large number of photons and the dressed states are macroscopic quantum superposition states. To approach this problem, analytical use of the dual Dyson series and the rotating-wave approximation is made.

Cooperative effects in Josephson junctions in a cavity in the strong coupling regime

Marco Frasca

We analyze the behavior of systems of two and three qubits made by Josephson junctions, treated in the two level approximation, driven by a radiation mode in a cavity. The regime we consider is a strong coupling one recently experimentally reached for a single junction. Rabi oscillations are obtained with the frequency proportional to integer order Bessel functions in the limit of a large photon number, similarly to the case of the single qubit. A selection rule is derived for the appearance of Rabi oscillations. A quantum amplifier built with a large number of Josephson junctions in a cavity in the strong coupling regime is also described.

Rabi Oscillations in a Josephson-Junction Charge Two-Level System

Yasunobu Nakamura, Yu. A. Pashkin, J. S. Tsai

We investigated temporal behavior of an artificial two-level system driven by a strong oscillating field; namely, quantum-state evolution between two charge states in a small Josephson-junction circuit irradiated with microwaves. Rabi oscillations corresponding to 0-, 1-, and 2-photon resonances were observed. As a function of microwave amplitude, the Rabi frequencies followed a first-kind Bessel function of the corresponding order to the number of photons.

Cavity QED and Quantum Computation in the Strong Coupling Regime

Kazuyuki Fujii

In this paper we propose a Hamiltonian generalizing the interaction of the two--level atom and both the single radiation mode and external field $...$ a kind of cavity QED. We solve the Schrodinger equation in the strong coupling regime by making use of rotating wave approximation under new resonance conditions containing the Bessel functions and etc, and obtain unitary transformations of four types corresponding to Rabi oscillations which perform quantum logic gates in Quantum Computation.

Interaction of a two-level atom with single-mode optical field beyond the rotating wave approximation

Ju Liu, Zhiyuan Li

One of the simplest models involving the atom-field interaction is the coupling of a single two-level atom with single-mode optical field. Under the rotating wave approximation, this problem is reduced to a form that can be solved exactly. But the approximation is only valid when the two levels are resonant or nearly resonant with the applied electromagnetic radiation. Here we present an analytical solution without the rotating wave approximation and applicable to general atom-field interaction far away from the resonance. We find that there exists remarkable influence of the initial phase of optical field on the Rabi oscillations and Rabi splitting, and this issue cannot be explored in the context of the rotating wave approximation. Due to the retention of the counter-rotating terms, higher-order harmonic appears during the Rabi splitting. The analytical solution suggests a way to regulate and control the quantum dynamics of a two-level atom and allows for exploring more essential features of the atom-field interaction.

Quantum Rabi oscillations of a qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide

Ya. S. Greenberg, A. A. Shtygashev, O. A. Chuikin +2 more

We theoretically investigate quantum Rabi oscillations in a system consisting of a two-level atom (qubit) strongly coupled to a one-dimensional open waveguide. In contrast to conventional cavity quantum electrodynamics, the qubit interacts with a continuum of propagating modes, which gives rise to fundamentally different dynamical behavior. Within the rotating-wave approximation, we express the multimode Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian in terms of collective bosonic operators and show that the system possesses two integrals of motion, enabling an exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in the single-excitation subspace. We show that for a strongly interacting qubit-photon system, the dynamics are captured by a reduced two-level model. In this framework, each level is defined as the product of the atomic excited state and a specific field mode, which takes the form of a multiphoton Fock-like state. In this picture, the Rabi oscillations represent a collective phenomenon corresponding to oscillations between multiphoton states differing by a single photon. We then extend our analysis to multiphoton processes in which the initial field is a coherent state with a continuous spectrum. In this case, the Rabi frequency is shown to be sensitive to the spectral profile of the function that generates the coherent state.
