Random low rank mixed states are highly entangled

Abstract

We prove that for many ranks r<2m-2, random rank r mixed states in bipartite mxm systems have relatively high Schmidt numbers, which is based on algebraic-geometric separability criterion proved in [1]. This also means that the algebraic-geometric separability criterion can be used to detect all low rank entangled mixed states outside a measure zero set.

Schmidt numbers of low-rank bipartite mixed states

Hao Chen

Schmidt numbers of bipartite mixed states [B. M. Torhal and P. Horodecki, Phys. Rev. A 61, R040301 (2001)] characterize the minimum Schmidt ranks of pure states that are needed to construct such mixed states. Schmidt number is the minimum number of entangled degrees of freedom of a bipartite mixed state. We give a lower bound for the Schmidt numbers of low-rank bipartite mixed states and conclude that generic low-rank mixed states have relatively high Schmidt numbers and thus entangled.

Schmidt number of pure states in bipartite quantum systems as an algebraic-geometric invariant

Hao Chen

Our previous work about algebraic-geometric invariants of the mixed states are extended and a stronger separability criterion is given. We also show that the Schmidt number of pure states in bipartite quantum systems, a classical concept, is actually an algebraic-geometric invariant.

Separability for mixed states with operator Schmidt rank two

Gemma De las Cuevas, Tom Drescher, Tim Netzer

The operator Schmidt rank is the minimum number of terms required to express a state as a sum of elementary tensor factors. Here we provide a new proof of the fact that any bipartite mixed state with operator Schmidt rank two is separable, and can be written as a sum of two positive semidefinite matrices per site. Our proof uses results from the theory of free spectrahedra and operator systems, and illustrates the use of a connection between decompositions of quantum states and decompositions of nonnegative matrices. In the multipartite case, we prove that any Hermitian Matrix Product Density Operator (MPDO) of bond dimension two is separable, and can be written as a sum of at most four positive semidefinite matrices per site. This implies that these states can only contain classical correlations, and very few of them, as measured by the entanglement of purification. In contrast, MPDOs of bond dimension three can contain an unbounded amount of classical correlations.

A Subspace of Maximal Dimension with Bounded Schmidt Rank

Priyabrata Bag, Dey, Santanu

We study Schmidt rank for a vector (i.e., a pure state) and Schmidt number for a mixed state which are entanglement measures. We show that if a subspace of a certain bipartite system contains no vector of Schmidt rank $\leqslant k$, then any state supported on that space has Schmidt number at least $k+1$. A construction of subspace of $\mathbb{C}^m \otimes \mathbb{C}^n$ of maximal dimension, which does not contain any vector of Schmidt rank less than $3$, is given here.

We show that if a subspace of a certain bipartite system contains no vector of Schmidt rank ⩽k\leqslant k⩽k, then any state supported on that space has Schmidt number at least k+1k+1k+1.
