Decoherence and robustness of parity-dependent entanglement in the dynamics of a trapped ion

Abstract

We study the entanglement between the 2D vibrational motion and two ground state hyperfine levels of a trapped ion. Under particular conditions this entanglement depends on the parity of the total initial vibrational quanta. We study the robustness of this quantum coherence effect with respect to the presence of non-dissipative sources of decoherence, and of an imperfect initial state preparation.

Dynamics of Entanglement for Coherent Motional States of Two Trapped Ions in Cascaded Optical Cavities

Gao‐xiang Li, Zhang Fan, Shaoping Wu

We study the generation of an entangled motional coherent state of two distant ions trapped in two cascaded cavities, in which the motional mode of the each ion is coupled to the respective cavity field via a linear-mixing interaction. The master equation is solved analytically by using the characteristic function method. It is found that the generated entangled coherent state resulted from the initial preparation of an even coherent state is more robust than that from an odd coherent state under the dissipation of the cavity.

Decoherence in ion traps

Sara Schneider, Gerard J Milburn

Summary form only given. To model the decoherence in ion traps resulting from laser intensity and phase fluctuations, we assume that the stochastic processes involved are white noise processes, which enables us to give a simple master equation description of this source of decoherence. We discuss the effects those fluctuations have on gate operations in ion-trap quantum computation and briefly address possible detection and error correction mechanisms. The master equation is then averaged over the noise and is sufficient to describe the results of experiments that probe the oscillations in the electronic populations as energy is exchanged between the internal and electronic motion. We get solutions for the probability of the ion to be in the ground state for both intensity and phase fluctuations. Our results predict that the decoherence rate resulting from intensity fluctuations will depend on the vibrational quantum number in different ways depending on which vibrational excitation sideband is used. So the dependence of the decoherence rate for the second red sideband depends quadratically on the vibrational energy state |n> the ion is prepared in, whereas for the first sideband, this effect is linear in n. Due to this result, the second red (or any higher-order) sideband is a better choice for testing the dependence of decoherence on the excitation in the vibrational state experimentally than just the first-order sideband. Because those fluctuations in the exciting laser pulse are not the only source of decoherence, we briefly discuss fluctuations in the trap potential itself. These fluctuations lead to a wobbling trap center point, and we discuss the effects due to them.

Decay and survivability of entanglement in two-dimensional ionic motions

Mahmoud Abdel‐Aty

This contribution describes some new features of quantum entanglement in a single three-level trapped ion confined in a two-dimensional (2D) harmonic potential. The dynamical properties of quantum entanglement are studied in terms of the reduced-density linear entropy considering two specific initial states of the field. Allowing the instantaneous position of the centre-of-mass motion of the ion to be explicitly time dependent, it is shown that either sudden death of entanglement or survivability of quantum entanglement can be obtained with a specific choice of the initial state parameters. The difference in evolution picture corresponding to the multi-quanta processes is discussed.

Generation and stabilization of entangled coherent states for the vibrational modes of a trapped ion

Zhi‐Rong Zhong, Xin-Jie Huang, Zhen‐Biao Yang +2 more

We propose a scheme for preparation of entangled coherent states for the motion of an ion in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap. In the scheme, the ion is driven by four laser beams along different directions in the ion trap plane, resulting in carrier excitation and couplings between the internal and external degrees of freedom. When the total quantum number of the vibrational modes initially has a definite parity, the competition between the unitary dynamics and spontaneous emission will force the system to evolve to a steady state, where the vibrational modes are in a two-mode cat state. We show that the method can be extended to realization of entangled coherent states for three vibrational modes of an ion in a three-dimensional anisotropic trap.

Measured quantum dynamics of a trapped ion

Lorenza Viola, Roberto Onofrio

The measurement process is taken into account in the dynamics of trapped ions prepared in nonclassical motional states. The induced decoherence is shown to manifest itself both in the inhibition of the internal population dynamics and in a damping of the vibrational motion without classical counterpart. Quantitative comparison with present experimental capabilities is discussed, leading to a proposal for the verification of the predicted effects.
