Asymptotic behavior of the probability density in one dimension

Abstract

We demonstrate that the probability density of a quantum state moving freely in one dimension may decay faster than t−1. The t−2 and t−3 dependencies are illustrated with analytically solvable examples. Decays faster than t−1 allow the existence of dwell times and delay times.

Dwell time and asymptotic behavior of the probability density

Juan Gonzalo Muga, V. Delgado, Robert F. Snider

The asymptotic long-time behavior of the probability density in a collision of a particle with several model potentials is analyzed. In all cases the observed dependence is an inverse cubic power of time. This assures the existence of the dwell time as a meaningful finite quantity.

Spatial Decay of the Single-Particle Density Matrix in Insulators: Analytic Results in Two and Three Dimensions

Sergei N. Taraskin, David Alan Drabold, Stephen R. Elliott

Analytic results for the asymptotic decay of the electron density matrix in insulators have been obtained in all three dimensions (D = 1,2,3) for a tight-binding model defined on a simple cubic lattice. The anisotropic decay length is shown to be dependent on the energy parameters of the model. The existence of the power-law prefactor, proportional, variant r(-D/2), is demonstrated.

Enhanced observability of quantum postexponential decay using distant detectors

E. Torrontegui, Juan Gonzalo Muga, Joan Martorell +1 more

We study the elusive transition from exponential to postexponential (algebraic) decay of the probability density of a quantum particle emitted by an exponentially decaying source in one dimension. The main finding is that the probability density at the transition time, and thus its observability, increases with the distance of the detector from the source up to a critical distance beyond which exponential decay is no longer observed. Solvable models provide explicit expressions for the dependence of the transition on resonance and observational parameters, facilitating the choice of optimal conditions.

On the asymptotic decay law for wave packets in free space

K. Unnikrishnan

The Cauchy wave packet is introduced, whose probability density in free space depends on time asymptotically as [ln(t)]6/t3, thus displaying a remarkable departure from the commonly expected t−3 behavior.

The various power decays of the survival probability at long times for a free quantum particle

Manabu Miyamoto

The long time behaviour of the survival probability of the initial state and its dependence on the initial states are considered, for the one-dimensional free quantum particle. We derive the asymptotic expansion of the time evolution operator at long times, in terms of the integral operators. This enables us to obtain the asymptotic formula for the survival probability of the initial state ψ( x ), which is assumed to decrease sufficiently rapidly at large | x |. We then show that the behaviour of the survival probability at long times is determined by that of the initial state ψ at zero momentum k = 0. Indeed, it is proved that the survival probability can exhibit the various power decays such as t −2 m −1 for an arbitrary non-negative integer m as t → ∞, corresponding to the initial states with the condition ( k ) = O ( k m ) as k → 0.
