Isham's topos-theoretic perspective on the logic of the consistent-histories theory is extended in two ways. First, the presheaves of consistent sets of history propositions in the topos proposed by Isham are endowed with a Vietoris-type of topology and subsequently they are sheafified with respect to it. The category resulting from this sheafification procedure is the topos of sheaves of sets varying continuously over the Vietoris-topologized base poset category of Boolean subalgebras of the universal orthoalgebra of quantum history propositions. The second extension of Isham's topos consists in endowing the stalks of the aforementioned sheaves, which were originally inhabited by structureless sets, with further algebraic structure, that also enjoys a quantum causal interpretation, so as to arrive at the topos of consistent-histories of quantum causal sets. The resulting quantum causal histories topos is compared with Markopoulou's quantum causal histories, with Mallios and this author's finitary spacetime sheaves of quantum causal sets, as well as with Butterfield and Isham's topos perspective on the Kochen-Specker theorem of quantum logic.

Topos theory has been suggested by Doring and Isham as an alternative mathematical structure with which to formulate physical theories. In particular it has been used to reformulate standard quantum mechanics in such a way that a novel type of logic is used to represent propositions. In this paper we extend this formulation to include temporally-ordered collections of propositions as opposed to single-time propositions. That is to say, we have developed a quantum history formalism in the language of topos theory where truth values can be assigned to temporal propositions. We analyse the extent to which such truth values can be derived from the truth values of the constituent, single-time propositions.
The basic ingredients of the ‘‘consistent histories’’ approach to a generalized quantum theory are ‘‘histories’’ and decoherence functionals. The main aim of this program is to find and to study the behavior of consistent sets associated with a particular decoherence functional d. In its recent formulation by Isham [‘‘Quantum logic and the histories approach to quantum theory,’’ J. Math. Phys. 35, 2157–2185 (1994)] it is natural to identify the space 𝒰𝒫 of propositions about histories with an orthoalgebra or lattice. When 𝒰𝒫 is given by the lattice of projectors 𝒫(𝒱) in some Hilbert space 𝒱, consistent sets correspond to certain partitions of the unit operator in 𝒱 into mutually orthogonal projectors {α1,α2,...}, such that the function d(α,α) is a probability distribution on the boolean algebra generated by {α1,α2,...}. Using the classification theorem for decoherence functionals proven in Isham et al. [‘‘The classification of decoherence functionals: An analog of Gleason’s Theorem,’’ J. Math. Phys. 35, 6360–6370 (1994)] we show that in the case where 𝒱 is some separable Hilbert space there exists for each partition of the unit operator into a set of mutually orthogonal projectors, and for any probability distribution p(α) on the corresponding boolean algebra, decoherence functionals d with respect to which this set is consistent and which are such that for the probability functions d(α,α)=p(α) holds.
Topos theory has been suggested by Döring and Isham as an alternative mathematical structure with which to formulate physical theories. In this paper, we construct a sheaf-based topos quantum theory. It is well known that a topos quantum theory can be constructed on the topos of presheaves on the category of commutative von Neumann algebras of bounded operators on a Hilbert space. Also, it is already known that quantization naturally induces a Lawvere-Tierney topology on the presheaf topos. We show that a topos quantum theory akin to the presheaf-based one can be constructed on sheaves defined by the quantization-induced Lawvere-Tierney topology. That is, starting from the spectral sheaf as a state space of a given quantum system, we construct sheaf-based expressions of physical propositions and truth objects, and thereby give a method of truth-value assignment to the propositions. Furthermore, we clarify the relationship to the presheaf-based quantum theory. We give translation rules between the sheaf-based ingredients and the corresponding presheaf-based ones. The translation rules have “coarse-graining” effects on the spaces of the presheaf-based ingredients; a lot of different proposition presheaves, truth presheaves, and presheaf-based truth-values are translated to a proposition sheaf, a truth sheaf, and a sheaf-based truth-value, respectively. We examine the extent of the coarse-graining made by translation.
The aim of this paper is to relate algebraic quantum mechanics to topos theory, so as to construct new foundations for quantum logic and quantum spaces. Motivated by Bohr’s idea that the empirical content of quantum physics is accessible only through classical physics, we show how a noncommutative C*-algebra of observables A induces a topos T(A) in which the amalgamation of all of its commutative subalgebras comprises a single commutative C*-algebra A . According to the constructive Gelfand duality theorem of Banaschewski and Mulvey, the latter has an internal spectrum Σ(A) in T(A) , which in our approach plays the role of the quantum phase space of the system. Thus we associate a locale (which is the topos-theoretical notion of a space and which intrinsically carries the intuitionistic logical structure of a Heyting algebra) to a C*-algebra (which is the noncommutative notion of a space). In this setting, states on A become probability measures (more precisely, valuations) on Σ , and self-adjoint elements of A define continuous functions (more precisely, locale maps) from Σ to Scott’s interval domain. Noting that open subsets of Σ(A) correspond to propositions about the system, the pairing map that assigns a (generalized) truth value to a state and a proposition assumes an extremely simple categorical form. Formulated in this way, the quantum theory defined by A is essentially turned into a classical theory, internal to the topos T(A) .These results were inspired by the topos-theoretic approach to quantum physics proposed by Butterfield and Isham, as recently generalized by Döring and Isham.
The basic ingredients of the `consistent histories' approach to a generalized quantum theory are `histories'and decoherence functionals. The main aim of this program is to find and to study the behaviour of consistent sets associated with a particular decoherence functional d. In its recent formulation by Isham it is natural to identify the space \\UP of propositions about histories with an orthoalgebra or lattice. When \\UP is given by the lattice of projectors \\PV in some Hilbert space \\V, consistent sets correspond to certain partitions of the unit operator in \\V into mutually orthogonal projectors \\{\\a_1,\\a_2,\\ldots\\}, such that the function d(\\a,\\a) is a probability distribution on the boolean algebra generated by \\{\\a_1,\\a_2,\\ldots\\}. Using the classification theorem for decoherence functionals, proven previously, we show that in the case where \\V is some separable Hilbert space there exists for each partition of the unit operator into a set of mutually orthogonal projectors, and for any probability distribution p(\\a) on the corresponding boolean algebra, decoherence functionals d with respect to which this set is consistent and which are such that for the probability functions d(\\a,\\a)=p(\\a) holds.
