Discrete path integral for spin-1/2 in the Grassmannian representation

arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

A variation to the usual formulation of Grassmann representation path integrals is presented. Time-indexed anticommuting partners are introduced for each Grassmann coherent state variable and a general method for handling the effect of these introduced Grassmann partners is also developed. These Grassmann partners carry the nilpotency and anticommutivity of the Grassmann coherent state variables into the propagator and allow the propagator to be written as a path integral. Two examples are introduced in which this variation is shown to yield exact results. In particular, exact results are demonstratated for a spin-1/2 in a time-dependent magnetic field, and for a spin-boson system. The stationary path approximation is then shown to be exact for each example.

Grassmann coherent states representation of the path integral: Evaluation of the generating function for spin systems

Pablo G. O. Anicich, Horacio Grinberg

Abstract An interacting spin system is investigated within the scenario of the Feynman path integral representation of quantum mechanics. Short‐time propagator algorithms and a discrete time formalism are used in combination with a basis set involving Grassmann variables coherent states to get a many‐body analytic propagator. The generating function thus obtained leads, after an adequate tracing over Grassmann variables in the imaginary time domain, to the partition function. A spin 1/2 Hamiltonian involving the whole set of interactions is considered. Fermion operators satisfying the standard anticommutation relations are constructed from the raising and lowering spin operators via the Jordan–Wigner transformation. The partition function obtained is more general than the partition function of the traditional Ising model involving only first‐neighbor interactions. Computations were performed assuming that the coupling as a function of the distance can be reasonably well represented by an Airy function. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2002

Treatment Of Spin-1/2 Particle In Interaction With A Time-Dependent Magnetic Field By The Fermionic Coherent-State Path-Integral Formalism

Mekki Aouachria

We consider a spin-1/2 particle interacting with a time-dependent magnetic field using path integral formalism. The propagator is first of all written in the standard form replacing the spin by two fermionic oscillators via the Schwinger model. The propagator is then exactly determined, thanks to a simple transformation, and the transition probability is deduced.

Thermodynamic Parameters of Central Spin Coupled to an Antiferromagnetic Bath: Path Integral Formalism

Christian Platini Fogang Kuetche, Nsangou Issofa, M.E. Ateuafack +1 more

A path-integral representation of central spin system immersed in an antiferromagnetic environment was investigated. To carry out this study, we made use of the discrete-time propagator method associated with a basic set involving coherent states of Grassmann variables which made it possible to obtain the analytical propagator which is the centerpiece of the study. In this study, we considered that the environment was in the low-temperature and low-excitation limit and was split into 2 subnets that do not interact with each other. The evaluation of our system was made by considering the first neighbor approximation. From the formalism of the path integrals, it is easy to evaluate the partition function and thermodynamic properties followed from an appropriate tracing over Grassmann variables in the imaginary time domain. We show that the energy of the system depends on the number of sites n when β → 0.

Coherent State Path Integral for the Harmonic Oscillator and a Spin Particle in a Constant Magnetic field

Mario Bergeron

Definition and formulas for harmonic oscillator coherent states and spin coherent states are reviewed in detail. The path integral formalism and its relation with the partition function of a system are also reviewed. The harmonic oscillator coherent state path integral is evaluated exactly at the discrete level and then used to find its continuum limit using various regularizations. The computation of the path integral for a particle of spin s put in a constant magnetic field is carried out using harmonic oscillator coherent states and spin coherent states, with a careful analysis of infinitesimal terms (in 1/N where N is the number of time slices) appearing in the Lagrangian. A mapping of the spin system into a CP1 model is shown explicitly. The theory of a spinless particle in the field of a magnetic monopole and its relation with the spin system are explained. The equivalence of these two models is established up to infinitesimal order by the introduction of an external field correction. This gives a new representation of a coherent state path integral in terms of a more familiar Feynman path integral.

Path integral for spinning particle in magnetic field via bosonic coherent states

Tahar Boudjedaa, Abdelhafid Bounames, L. Chétouani +2 more

Using the coherent states representation and the Schwinger boson model, the propagator of a spinning particle in interaction with an arbitrary magnetic field is derived in the framework of the path integral formalism. To show the relevance of the formalism to some applications, the Green function of spinning particle s=1/2 in special configuration of magnetic field is calculated. The transition amplitude and Berry’s phase for an arbitrary spin and time dependent magnetic field are deduced. The case of half integer spin is also considered.

Grassmann numbers: coherent states and the path integral for fermions

Tom Lancaster, Stephen J. Blundell

This chapter introduces a new type of mathematical object: Grassmann numbers. These anticommute and can be used to describe fermions. It shows how to construct a fermion path integral using Grassmann numbers.
